Free gallery talk on science in art
By Anonymous — Monday, July 29th, 2013
CSU Channel Islands Professor Jerry Clifford will discuss “The Physics of Art” in a free presentation from 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Harbor Village Gallery. It is third in a series of free art appreciation events sponsored by the nonprofit Buenaventura Art Association and the first in the seaside gallery at Ventura Harbor. Clifford has taught a college course by that name for many years at CSUCI, along with mathematics, applied physics and astronomy courses. Using classical and modern artworks, he will examine how artists employ light and color to affect our perception, often through their careful observation rather than scientific training. He also will discuss the nature of light, the basis of color and its use in images, and take a look at eyesight and how the brain processes images. Learning some of the science involved can help everyone’s understanding and appreciation of art and may provide helpful insights for working artists. The talk is open to BAA members and all interested members of the public. Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are necessary. To secure a place, RSVP to 648-1235. The gallery at 1591 Spinnaker Drive in Ventura Harbor Village is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except Tuesdays and remains open until 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information about Clifford’s presentation or BAA and its galleries, call 648-1235 or visit the website www.buenaventuragallery.org. |
