Most kids are familiar with guacamole, but how many have grown their own avocado tree, starting with an avocado seed? Kids and their families are invited to learn how the large seed they usually remove from inside an avocado can grow into an avocado tree at the Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum on Sunday, August 4, 2013, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

During the free event, called “Grow an Avocado,” kids will work with the Agriculture Museum’s Education Coordinator and be given all the supplies they need to start their own plant. They can take home their seed along with instructions about proper care published by the California Avocado Commission. Sample avocado seeds started a month before the event will show kids what they can expect to see at home in the future. Avocado recipes will be shared with visitors.

“Grow an Avocado” is part of the Museum’s ongoing series of Free First Sunday activities for families and children. Designed to encourage agricultural awareness, these activities take place from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. every first Sunday of the month. Admission to the Agriculture Museum is free all day on Free First Sundays and includes admission to all Museum exhibits.

The Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum is located in historic downtown Santa Paula at 926 Railroad Avenue, Santa Paula, California. Hours are 10 a.m.– 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. General admission is $4 adults, $3 seniors, $1 children ages 6-17. Free for Museum of Ventura County members and children ages 5 and younger.
