F.H.S. Alumni
In celebration of the F.H.S. Alumni Association turning 100 years old next year, we thought we would take you down memory lane once a month and highlight some of the "Golden years" from our century of existence. Take the class of 1983. "Involved, Fun Loving, Energetic, Trusting?". Well, that's what their senior annual says. Here's another quote from the '83 Copa de Oro. "The Theme of Going at Full Force applied to the 82-83 Annual staff as much as to the yearbook we produced. We had a large and very dedicated staff this year and had fun as we worked hard to put out one of the best copa de oro's ever". We're sure there are a few classes from our Alma Mater who would argue that point. Here's some more highlights of 1983 at Fillmore High. F.F.A. - Champion pen of dairy goats shown at the county fair. They also entered a beautiful Landscape booth that year at the county fair. There were thriving clubs at the High School like FBLA, International Club, Expression Class. In Sports, the 1983 Varsity Cross Country team had a banner year under the leadership of head coach, Epi Torres (Class of '69). They compiled an 8-1 over-all record and were undefeated in League. They were crowned the Tri-Valley Champs for the 2nd straight year. Varsity Basketball - Co-Champions that year. In 1983 the Superintendent of Schools was Dr. Neil Schmidt. The High School Principal was Mr. Robert O. Mangus. Counselor, Ms. Linda Crockett, State Req - Drivers Ed, Mr. Bruce Dempsey. Attendance Clerk, Mrs. Mary Ramirez. Custodial Staff, (and ever popular) Mr. Delfino Mendez, who retired in 1983 after working for the District and High School for 34 years. Also retiring in 1983 from the District was High School teacher, and coach, Mr. Claire "Red" Herrill, and School Groundsman, and Custodial, Mr. Manuel Pillado. Proud sponsors of the Copa De Oro that year were Fillmore Bootery, Edmonds Furniture, Patterson's Hardware, Austins Fillmore Market, and Romona Savings and Loan.
