Location: 11500 block Chestnut Ridge Street, Moorpark, CA
Date: September 3, 2009

During the early morning hours on September 2, 2009, a resident in the 11500 block of Chestnut Ridge Street in the City of Moorpark discovered that the family dog had been attacked and killed. Subsequent examination revealed that a mountain lion was most likely responsible for the attack.

The area of the attack is adjacent to an undeveloped and natural open-space hillside. The undeveloped hillsides surrounding the communities of Moorpark, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks are home to many wild animals including mountain lions, coyotes, and bears. Many of these wild animals naturally hunt for food at nighttime, with the majority of their prey being other wild animals. Occasionally, family pets become the prey.

Residents who live next to undeveloped natural areas should take precautions to protect their pets, particularly at night. Pets in these areas should be brought indoors and not left in the backyard. Pet food and other potential food sources should be secured. Although there have been no known recent attacks on children, residents should also be mindful of their small children’s whereabouts and activities.

Anyone who sees a wild animal such as a mountain lion in a developed neighborhood is encouraged to call 9-1-1 for assistance. Do not go near, or attempt to catch or feed these animals. As beautiful as they are, they can be very dangerous.

Living in the beautiful surroundings of Moorpark has many benefits, including the enjoyment of all that nature provides. We can enjoy these benefits much safer by taking these few steps to protect our pets and families.
