Child Development Resources of Ventura County, Inc. (CDR) is hosting its second annual family fun day, Celebrate the Child!, on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Camarillo Ranch, 201 Camarillo Ranch Rd., Camarillo, CA 93012. 3,000 invited family members, including the children served by CDR, the largest social service agency in Ventura County, will be welcomed for a day filled with delicious, multi-cultural food offered by 40 area restaurants, family-friendly activities, such as games and arts and craft projects provided by 32 local businesses, an opportunity to meet local public safety representatives, such as the Fire Department, the Sheriff's K-9 Unit, American Medical Response Ambulance Service, and others, meet with representatives from First 5 of Ventura County and associated service agencies, and receive dental screenings by area dentists, to name a few of the activities and highlights of the day. This county-wide event, hosted by CDR in partnership with over 80 local businesses, is offered at no charge to those attending, and is sponsored by Sunbelt Enterprises, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, Streamline Office Solutions, Sanfords Insurance Agency and Famers Insurance, Blue Shield of California, and Ponderosa Office Supply Company.

SANTA PAULA, CALIF.--Limoneira Company and Agromin have teamed up with the Ventura County Resource Conservation District (VCRCD) to donate 183 "Carrots for Kids" seed growing kits to third and fourth graders in the Santa Paula Elementary School District. The carrot kit distribution is part of the VCRCD's efforts to educate local schoolchildren about the value of agriculture and growing their own food.

"All the kids have been highly involved and enthusiastic about the topic," says Mary Maranville, environmental education outreach coordinator for VCRCD. "Kids love learning about agriculture, gardening and details about fruits and vegetables. Handing out the carrot kits is a lovely way to end the presentation."

Bardsdale 4-H is having new member enrollments at our general meeting on Monday September 28th, 2009. We meet in the back room of the Veteran’s Memorial Building at 7 p.m. If you’ve ever thought of joining, now’s the time! We have lots of exciting projects to offer this year in addition to raising animals. Regular members must be between 9-18 years old, but we also offer projects for primary members aged 5-8. On September 16, 2009, at approximately 2:49 p.m. The Santa Paula Police Department received a 9-1-1 call of a plane crash east of the Santa Paula Airport.

Upon arrival, officers were told the plane was last seen hitting the thick brush in the area of the river bottom, located south of the Santa Paula Airport. Officers and firefighters began checking the area for the plane. Due to the large search area and tall, thick brush, a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department rescue helicopter was dispatched to assist in the search.

Emergency crews were able to quickly locate the plane, which had flipped over during the crash landing. The female pilot was the sole occupant in the plane. She received minor injuries as a result of the crash however, she declined medical treatment at the scene.

Due to this incident being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot’s identity will not be released at this time. At the time of this press release, F.A.A. officials are still on scene investigating.

Soroptimist International of Fillmore will celebrate the International Day of Peace on September 20th at 1:00 in the City Park in front of City Hall with a ceremony at the location of the prospective Peace Pole site at the City Park in from of City Hall. All are invited to participate in this important day. The International Day of Peace began in 1982 through a United Nations proclamation “devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations”. It was expanded in 2001 to a call for a day of global cease fire and nonviolence.

They began to honor the International Day of Peace in 2008 with a celebration and a temporary pole. Fillmore City Council approved the installation of a permanent Peace Pole to be installed in City Park at their last meeting. This year the pole will be the same temporary pole that has been used in the past. Participants will be invited to affix the word PEACE in various languages to the pole. Rev. Julie Morris, priest of Fillmore Trinity Episcopal Church will give the opening prayer followed by a short ceremony led by Sarah Hansen.

On September 5th, at approximately 7 p.m. our cat Duma was stolen from the front of our house in Moorpark. We live in the shanadoah community in Moorpark Ca, this is a upscale and gated neighborhood. On 9/11/2009 we received a phone call from a gentlemen by the name of Alex, a station manager of the USA Gas station in Fillmore, its located on the corner of A Street and Ventura HWY 126. Alex informed us that he found our cats tag in his flower pot out front of his gas station, not only is this cat loved by my family and in my eyes a loss my young children will never get over! this is an extremely unique cat that has been cross bread with Bengal cats to produce what is to be considered the most beautiful domestic! Duma has some distinct markings such as a scar on her stomach from a surgery, Also we took it upon ourselves to insert a chip to monitor her if such a problem were to arise! I have three little girls and they are absolutely heart broken, Not to mention my wife and I feel like a family member has been stolen.

The City of Fillmore’s next HHW collection is Oct. 3, 2009 – to allow residents and small business owners to drop off materials that are not accepted in either your trash or recycling bins for safe disposal, free of charge.
The Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Residents and small business owners can bring their HHW to Fillmore’s Public Works Department yard at the corner of A Street and Sespe Place.
The Collection will accept: Latex (water-based) and oil-base paints; computers and electronics; pool and photo chemicals; cleaning solvents; pesticides and insecticides; fertilizers; automobile batteries; used motor oil and filters; single-use and rechargeable batteries; and fluorescent light bulbs.
The Collection will not accept: fireworks, smoke detectors, radioactive and medical waste; explosive materials; compressed gas cylinders; tires; or trash.

City residents and small-business owners are encouraged to bring their unwanted clutter to well #4 located at 728 Goodenough Road, across the street from Ameron Pole Products Saturday, September 26th, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Trash, recyclables, furniture, appliances, old tires, refrigerators, computers, television sets, stereos and cathode ray tubes are among the materials that will be accepted, free of charge.
Note that oil, gasoline, diesel fuel and household hazardous waste such as cleaning solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, batteries and paint will not be accepted during the “City-Wide Clean Up Days.” However, Ventura County’s Pollution Prevention Center (5777 N. Ventura Ave., Ventura) is available for Fillmore residents and small business owners to dispose of toxic materials, also free of charge. Appointments are required. Call 658-4323.

Performances by more than 30 actors and dancers from the world famous Hemet Ramona Outdoor Play will highlight the second annual “Ramona Days” - October 4, 10AM-4PM at Rancho Camulos Museum National Historic Landmark, Piru, CA.

Helen Hunt Jackson’s 1884 classic California novel, Ramona, will come to life at the “Home of Ramona” as we celebrate all things Ramona.

In addition to seeing vignettes from the play, visitors can watch the 1910 Mary Pickford movie filmed on location at Camulos, view unique memorabilia and historic displays, experience living history and attend presentations by Ramona experts such as “Ramona Memories “ author Dydia DeLyser, Ramona pageant historian Phil Brigandi, and film maker Hugh Munro Neely.

Ventura, CA - The Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation is holding its 37th annual Benefactors’ Ball on Saturday, Oct. 3, with proceeds going toward the building of the new Community Memorial Hospital.

The event at the Embassy Suites Hotel Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and fine wine, followed by a dinner featuring gourmet cuisine.

The Benefactors’ Ball represents an opportunity for residents to support community-based healthcare. Every year hospital and community leaders from all over Ventura County gather for a night of dining, live music and dancing.

Eight artists living in Fillmore met to discuss the formation of the Artists Guild of Fillmore with the purpose of promoting fine art produced by local artists. A series of meetings were scheduled to define ways and means to clarify goals. A prime concern is where to show the art and another is to create in people an interest for collecting work by local artists.

Those attending were Judy Dressler (oil painting), Lady Jan Faulkner (multi-media), Lois Freeman-Fox (mixed media), Lynn Hauge (oil and pastel), Joanne King (watercolor), Wana Klasen, (watercolor and mixed media) Virginia Neuman (acrylic and watercolor) and Luanne Perez (watercolor).

The theme of the upcoming Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley Annual Dinner/Auction says it all. Greatness begins with the community, its families and is nurtured at the Boys & Girls Club.

The Club’s Annual Dinner/Auction, scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, is their largest fund raiser of the year, with this year’s goal of $75,000. All of the funds earned at the Dinner/Auction will stay in the local communities the Club serves Santa Paula, Fillmore and Rancho Sespe.
