Narrative:

On August 29, 2024, at approximately 1:07 PM, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies from the Headquarters Patrol Station responded to a call for service of a subject with a stab wound in the intersection of Rice Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard, in the unincorporated area of Oxnard. Upon arrival, deputies located a 33-year-old male suffering from a stab wound, who was identified as Ricardo Juarez. The suspect was identified as 42-year-old, Alvin Otis Johnson from the city of Camarillo.

Investigators discovered Johnson, and the victim were acquainted and were travelling together in the same vehicle when the stabbing occurred. Following the stabbing, the victim exited the vehicle while Johnson fled the scene, using the victim’s vehicle to get away. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office immediately initiated a search for the suspect and the vehicle involved. Multiple investigative and patrol resources, including aircraft were deployed.

At approximately 5:08 PM, Ventura County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 911 call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon at a residence in the 3400 block of Huerta Court in the city of Camarillo. Simultaneously, an adult male victim arrived at the Camarillo Police Station, reporting he had been assaulted at the same residence and sustained injuries. Upon arrival at the Huerta Court residence, deputies encountered Johnson, who was armed with a handgun. Johnson was taken into custody without incident.

Deputies then entered the residence on Huerta Court and discovered a 75-year-old female with severe head trauma, who was identified as Marilyn Gallagher. Deputies immediately began performing life saving measures. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. Deputies discovered an additional adult male victim at the residence who sustained non-life threating injuries. Investigators learned Johnson was an acquaintance of the individuals who were present at the residence during the assault.

Johnson was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility, for two counts of 187 PC – Murder, two counts of 664/187 PC – Attempted Murder, 246.3 PC – Negligent discharge of a firearm, 207 PC – Kidnapping, 236 PC – False imprisonment, 29800 PC – Addict in possession of a firearm.
Johnson’s bail is currently set at $ 2,000,000 and his arraignment is scheduled for September 3rd, 2024, at 1:30 PM, in Ventura County Superior Court, Room #13.

Mighty Mites Silver Dax Camacho opened up the Raiders football season by scoring three touchdowns. Great job, Dax, keep it up! As for Head Coach Samuel Bennett III, a special thank you to the Bennett family for all you do for our community and football.

Cheering loudly from the sidelines was Fillmore’s own Mighty Cheerleader, Catalina Perez. Her coach has said not only is Cat a natural leader, but she always sets a great example for her teammates while keeping a positive attitude. Being a positive leader in our community is vital and amazing when demonstrated at a young age. Way to go, Catalina!

This is my first season as part of the Raiders family with my two youngest sons playing. I cannot wait to see what else is going to unfold this year as we continue to show special recognition to athletes, refs, coaching teams, and board members.

Remember that coaches and board members are out there volunteering their time and energy for the love of the game and the kids. Refs as well are trying to make fair calls, and kids are playing with their whole hearts. I don’t blame these kids for being so excited!

And remember to purchase your fan gear. I was excited to see T-shirts, and black, grey and blue choices in the hats. They also accept Venmo and Zelle.

Let’s all pick up our trash and water bottles and keep it clean for our Raiders!

Our popular “history classes” are back from hiatus. “What’s in a Name” will kick off the fall session on September 17, at 7 pm. How did streets and landmarks get their names? Why is there a Guiberson Road but no Gerberding Street? There’s 7th Street, but what happened to streets 1 through 6?

On October 17, “A Brief History of Bardsdale” will be presented by Museum Executive Director, Martha Gentry, whose family has lived in Bardsdale since early in the 20th century.

This will be followed by “Churches of Piru” presented by Michele McKinley on November 21st. You will learn about the Rock Church, the church built by David Cook and other places of worship in the Piru, Camulos and Buckhorn areas.

I got a call from Francisco Avila’s mom during fair on auction day. I thought to myself, I wonder if Mike Richardson bought his pig. What a crazy instinct. I have been lucky enough to coach Francisco in baseball and soccer, so when he saw the Quality Ag logo he knew that it was his team’s sponsor.

If you have never seen the Quality Ag trucks in town you must not be from here. It’s a local to Fillmore Agricultural business and supports many members of our community. His two children, Chloe and Remy, are by their dad’s side, helping grow their family business.

Francisco knew that Quality Ag has always helped Coach Brandy’s teams and thanked him for taking care of them. Mike has been extremely generous to my teams or my son’s sports teams. He has made it possible to provide jackets to every player and names on hats.

He has also sponsored organizations all over town. There are so many things he is involved with, I know I cannot cover them all. While being a great employer who takes care of his work family, he also makes sure the kids are supported in their animal endeavors.

So this is just a special little thank you to Mike from me. From the bottom of this coaches heart. you are much appreciated!

Fillmore, CA – Conejo Health has been awarded the prestigious Elevate Youth California (EYC) grant award funded by the dedicated efforts of the Conejo Health team. This award marks the launch of an innovative program aimed at preventing substance use and promoting healthy habits among the youth ages 12-26 in the Heritage Valley area of Ventura County.

Elevate Youth California supports this project through Proposition 64 funds. The California Department of Health Care Services contracts The Center at Sierra Health Foundation to support the implementation of this program. Elevate Youth California is designed to foster the next generation of community leaders through prevention, education, and early intervention programs. Conejo Health, a Southern California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2020, dedicated to providing equitable public health services, with a primary focus on substance use disorders in our area.
The founding of Conejo Health was inspired by a personal tragedy experienced by its founder, Matt Pall, who lost his partner in 2019, followed by the loss of two friends. Determined to prevent others from experiencing similar losses, Matt Pall, a paramedic, established Conejo Health to offer access, awareness and action around substance use. Conejo Health is proud to have been awarded the first grant from the EYC platform based solely in Ventura County. In 2023, longtime Fillmore resident Brandy Hollis sought to bring positive change to her community by exploring street/backpack medicine initiatives. This led her to collaborate with Conejo Health's Ian Anderson and former 20-year Fillmore resident Larissa Nelson who has a passion for community service and youth programs. Recognizing their shared passion for preventative measures, together they developed this program and Brandy joined Conejo Health to serve as Director of this groundbreaking youth program in Ventura County. The program is being run with the help of Larissa Nelson and set to join the team is youth intern Fillmore native Ivan Becerra who will act as a community mentor while entering his second year at Cal Lutheran. Ivan was recently awarded District 63’s Umpire of the Year and received special recognition from Fillmore Mayor Carrie Broggie.

This EYC-funded program, named "Rompiendo Cadenas" (Breaking Chains), symbolizes the community’s commitment to overcoming addiction and fostering future leaders. The program will focus on community involvement, public speaking, social campaigns, mentorship, the arts, sports, technology, volunteerism, and character building for those ages 12-26.
Numerous community partners are poised to support this transformative initiative.

Brandy Hollis, the new program director, is an active member of the Fillmore community and currently serves as a Commissioner on the City of Fillmore Cultural Arts and Recreation Commission (CAR). Brandy's extensive community involvement includes serving on various committees, contributing articles to the Fillmore Gazette, and participating in local government and school board meetings. She has served as member at large on Fillmore Lions Club scholarship committee, Fillmore Women's Service Club (just served as MC for the 1st Casino Night fundraiser in May), Fillmore High Schools School Site Council President, San Cayetano Elementary Schools Site Council Vice President , participated in the LCAPP process, and you can usually find her at the City Council and/or School Board meetings. In the past she has coached youth sports in baseball, softball and soccer as well as served on AYSO 242 Board. She looks forward to promoting Fillmore's Summer Music Nights, bringing live music and dancing to the city.

With her proven track record of child advocacy and community engagement, Brandy is confident that Rompiendo Cadenas will not only break the chains of addiction but also dismantle stigma, empowering youth to become future leaders. Conejo Health is proud to embark on this journey with Elevate Youth California, introducing innovative and impactful initiatives to our youth to combat the substance abuse epidemic sweeping our state and nation.

You never know who might show up at your front door. Last year, Kevin Shaffer and his wife Kimberly visited the Fillmore Historical Museum for the first time. They had driven California State Route 126 many times through the years, passing through Fillmore going east or west, but never stopped to see what Fillmore has to offer. One day in 2023 when they were passing through Fillmore, Kimberly suggested to Kevin that they stop and visit the Fillmore Museum. The day of their visit coincided with a day the museum’s Hinckley House was open to tour. The Hinckley House was built in 1905 and later owned by Fillmore’s first dentist, Dr. Ira Hinckley, and his wife Catherine, “Kate.” When Kevin and Kimberly entered the front parlor of the house, Kevin’s eyes became fixed on a more than century-old pump organ that sits prominently in the room. He told the museum staff that he knows how to play the pump organ and asked if he could try it. Museum staff said, “yes,” and without hesitation, Kevin played the piece “Let it Be,” a song by the Beatles, released in 1970. The music from the pump organ awakened the quiet and pristine exhibit of today with a sound that echoed years past when the house was filled with music and laughter. Museum staff were so pleased to hear the pump organ played by someone who knows how to play it, and Kevin was happy to be given the opportunity to play it because the last time he played a pump organ was in 1969. For both Kevin and the museum, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

On Friday, August 2, Kevin played the pump organ to members and friends of the museum. The performance was recorded, and Andrea Recendez photographed the event, which was the first of its kind held at the Hinckley House. One of the special guests was Diane Arundell, who was married to the late Jim Arundell. The Arundell family in Fillmore dates to the mid-1800s. William Arundell and his son Thomas “Tommy,” came to Ventura County in 1879. Tommy established an apiary in Pole Creek and accumulated over 1,200 acres, soon harvested six tons of honey, and had up to seven hundred stands of bees. Tommy built an adobe on the property and purchased a pump organ. The pump organ was later donated to the Fillmore Historical Museum by the Arundell family, and it is now a permanent exhibit at the Hinckley House. Diane recalls seeing the pump organ years ago at the adobe, but Friday’s event was the first time she heard it being played. She said it sounded beautiful. When Kevin was asked about the quality of sound and condition of the pump organ, also called a harmonium, or reed organ, he said “it’s still in good shape and has good resonation.” Although the pump organ is much like an organ, the difference is the pump organ makes sound by blowing air through reeds, which are tuned to different pitches to make musical notes.
Originally from Ohio, Kevin learned how to play the pump organ when he was a child. He later studied at Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and together with Kimberly opened a dance and music studio that they operated for twenty-five years, until they moved to Ventura about 6 years ago. Today, Kevin is a piano teacher, and plays piano at events.

In our ongoing commitment to safety and California’s fight against wildfires,
SoCal Edison (SCE) crews and contractors will be in the Fillmore area conducting aerial inspections of our electrical equipment. Over the next few days, you may notice an increase in aerial activity, including the use of drones. All personnel can and will provide an SCE-issued badge or authorized work letter at the request of customers or residents; hours of operation: Daylight Hours, Monday – Saturday. The work that Edison does is very crucial to public safety, to maintain continuity of the grid, provide the best service possible to their customers and minimize power outages.
The job may involve a 360-degree inspection of power poles, transformers and switching equipment, looking for potential problems such as frayed electrical wires or damage to specialized equipment designed to prevent wildfires and keep power flowing.

“We get to see a birds-eye view of our infrastructure and our assets that we don’t typically get to see from the ground, said Kathy Hidalgo, SCE director of inspections. “We now have a holistic view of the health of our assets.” Citizens have an expectation of privacy and we do not intend to invade a person’s privacy. SCE deploys drones and helicopters strictly for the purpose of inspecting and evaluating equipment in the field,” said Kristi Gardner, SCE principal manager of program oversight, development and planning. “The focus of these operations is our own electrical assets, structures and right of ways to support our assets. SCE pilots and vendor pilots comply with all applicable laws and regulations.”

We have exciting news for the church- we are starting our Date Night after a long hiatus from the Covid pandemic. So, we need your help and prayers!

The first time will be August 23 from 5:30-8:30 pm in LeBard Hall.
If you do not know the format, parents drop off their kids ages 4-11, and we provide a safe, nurturing environment while the parents have some free time. Around seven pm we read a story and give the children a healthy snack, and then the children continue enjoying the various centers that we have set up around the hall. We are flexible with the age suggestions, so if you want to take a younger grandchild with you, and you can be responsible for that child, it will be fine.
If you would like to help, you can in various ways. if you want to do a center: reading books, making a craft, stringing beads, designing a structure with cardboard boxes and paper tubes, playing a board game, or whatever else you think a child would enjoy, this is your opportunity! To help in a different way, if you want to contribute to the smack time, with prep time or actual snack items such as paper serving items, or money for the food, please contact Judi Hartshorn , as she is our resident food hostess- 805 320-2515 and she will gladly tell you what is needed.

We could use cardboard cereal boxes, toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, or any small boxes so our budding architects can have at it with glue and staples! Please start collecting these and drop them off at church on Sunday. When we have enough, we will ask you to kindly stop, but at the moment, we need our various building supplies.
Please share this with your friends and families with children, and publicize this opportunity for the children to spend an evening at church.

There is a registration form for the parents to fill out, so we will have emergency numbers on file. Eventually we will limit the number to 25 children, but that will take some time before the idea catches on in the community.
If you know of older siblings or teens who would like to be helpers, feel free to invite them, but let us know ahead of time, so we can assign them to a station.
