When it comes to tracking crime guns, California is immune to scientific infection.

Knowledge should precede policy. Yet California gun policy is often made in engineered ignorance. Despite pleas from law enforcement and assistance from the National Rifle Association, California’s most basic crime gun research processes wouldn’t receive a passing grade for a Research Methodologies 101 class.

Nowhere has the dearth of data on crime guns been more profound than on so-called “assault weapons” and felons with firearms.
