PATRIOTIC OBSERVANCE: August 29, 1957 - Strom Thurmond ended the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history. He spoke for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill; the bill passed.

ATHLETICS:
1. ATHLETES: Remember you are not allowed to participate in any FALL SPORT until you have been CLEARED and your TRANSPORTATION FEES have been paid.

CLUBS:
1. POETRY CLUB – First meeting Friday at lunch in the Drama room #18. New member welcomed!
2. FASHION CLUB – Meeting Friday at lunch in Rm. 34. New members welcomed.
3. ART STUDENTS - Those who signed up to paint the mural on Saturday during the Pirufest - meet at the Wall located across the street from Warring Park on Orchard Street between Center and Main Streets in Piru. Paints will stain clothing so be sure to wear work clothes. The artist who is supervising the project will be there between 10am and 6pm

SENIORS:
1. Class meeting on Wednesday 9/3 at lunch in Rm. 65 to discuss homecoming, Senior Ball, t-shirts & class motto.
2. Interested in becoming a fire cadet? Mrs. Larin in the College and Career Center can help you! You must have a 3.0 GPA or higher to qualify and participate.
3. Walk-in Dates & Times for Yearbook Portraits - Last Chance. KSSP Photographic Studios, your senior yearbook portrait photographer, is offering walk-in yearbook portrait sessions for students that have not already had their yearbook portraits taken or who do not have scheduled appointments. The dates for these walk-in sessions are Wednesday, September 3, 3pm - 7pm; Thursday, September 4, 3pm - 7pm; and Saturday, September 6, 9am - 3pm. The cost of the session is $25 + sales tax (=$26.81) which includes retouching. The sessions will be at the KSSP studio - 330 Central Ave., Fillmore (805) 524-6400. Students are reminded that appropriate dress is required. This is the last chance to get yearbook pictures taken for the yearbook.
 We want ALL seniors in the yearbook, so if money is an issue, the photography studio has offered a reduced sitting fee of $10 (no tax) during the three walk-in days next week. If you choose to pay the reduced fee, you will NOT be given a choice of poses for the yearbook picture.

JUNIORS:
1. Class meeting in Rm. 21 (Ms. Huxtable) on Friday to discuss Homecoming float ideas. More info on arch bearer points.

SOPHOMORES:
1. Class meeting on Friday in Rm. 3 at lunch to discuss homecoming float ideas.

STUDENTS:
1. Anyone can check his or her library account (textbooks and AR books checked out) from any school computer. The library and attendance office have a handout explaining the steps.
2. ROP AUTO CLASS – meets Tuesday & Thursday at 3:30.
3. Administrative detention – Tuesday & Thursday - more info next week.
4. Please be aware that the administration is planning to use metal detectors periodically when students enter school. This will occur randomly and without notice. Also, we have contacted the Sheriff’s Department to schedule visits by the drug sniffing dogs to check locker areas for any evidence of drugs on campus. Please join us in making the school a safe place to learn.
5. American Indian or Native Alaskan descendents – If you are part Indian or Native Alaskan you may qualify for the Ventura County Indian Education Consortium Program. This program provides: counselors to work with students of American Indian and Native Alaskan descent in the areas of personal and academic counseling; and special tutoring in all areas of the high school curriculum. This also includes information about special grants, scholarships and financial assistance for those students who plan to attend college, trade school or technical/vocational school throughout the United States. 6. If you did not get an UPDATED BELL SCHEDULE for your agenda book, you can pick one up in the Student Store.
7. Students that have outstanding DETENTIONS will not be allowed to attend the football game on Friday, September 5th. Please be responsible and serve your detentions.
8. September 9th is the registration deadline for the October 4th SAT reasoning and subject tests. You can register on-line at www.collegeboard.com. See your counselor for more information.
