A special thank you to those 75 Fillmore High School youth (some of whom are pictured above)  who volunteer to make a difference in the lives of a younger child. The youth meet weekly to do homework, arts and crafts, or to talk about something of interest or simply share how their week has gone.  In addition the youth go on trips together (on February 15 they are going to the LA Zoo).  The youth are supervised by program staff; Amelia Aparicio for Mountain Vista, Sespe and the Boys and Girls' Club; Norma Magana and Alicia Rodriguez at Fillmore Middle School.  The program started matching high school youth with 5 - 12 year old elementary and middle school students in 2000. In 2003 the Fillmore/Piru Mentor Program  joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ventura County. Studies have shown that the longer the match the greater the experience for both the "Big" and the "Little". Most high school students are signed up to be a mentor in their Freshmen year and they are encouraged to continue on through all four years of high school. Last week we had many sporting events take place at Fillmore High School. Boys and girls soccer played Carpinteria last Wednesday; boys frosh lost 2-0, boys JV tied 1-1, and boys varsity lost 2-1. Girls soccer JV lost 3-1 and girls varsity lost 7-0 . They also played against Oaks Christian and boys varsity lost 2-1 and girls varsity lost 9-0. Girls Basketball played this week against La Reina; both teams won, Varsity 43-41 in overtime. Varsity girls also played Villanova this week and defeated them 60-49. As of now Varsity is 2-1 in league and JV is 1-1 in league. Boys Basketball played this week against Oak Park; all teams lost. Frosh and Varsity played later in the week against Grace Brothren, both teams won, the final score of the Varsity game was 74-43. Bishop Diego was their final game of the week; Frosh won, JV lost, and Varsity won 60-44. Wrestling also had a weekend match, please read next week for scores. The pep squad competed this Sunday in Long Beach against 6 teams from different counties. We came in first place and also took home Grand Champions which means that we had the highest score out of all the school teams at this competition. The formal was also a success. Students danced the entire night to DJ Divine from Q-1047. Lets go Flashes!!!

 


 
 
 

This week at the High School is celebrating homecoming! The theme this year is Dr. Seuss. On Monday the week was kicked off with a party at the bus garage. The week will be filled with dress up days for the students. Float Building will be going on all week starting at 3pm and going till 9pm at the Bus Garage. Each class has picked a specific Dr. Seuss book to be the theme of their float. On Friday the floats can be viewed by the public at 2:50pm during the Homecoming Parade. The parade route will start up at the high school and will end at central. Come out and support the classes. During the homecoming game king and queen will be announced. Voting for Class and Senior Court went on in the week prior. The Homecoming Dance will be held Saturday at the Boys and Girls Club. Ticket costs are $2 with ASB sticker; or $5 without sticker. The dance begins at 7 o’clock and ends at 11. Good Luck to all classes and the football team. Let’s have a fantastic week of school spirit!

 
At FHS “Graduation” begins right now

On Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Fillmore High School Seniors will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from UC, CSU, community college, and private colleges and universities at the Second Annual Higher Ed Week at Fillmore High School during periods 1 and 3. College and university representatives will be here from Imperial Valley College; California State University Northridge; San Bernardino State University; San Marcos State University; San Diego State University; SDSU-Imperial Valley campus; Chico State University, University of California, Davis; UC Irvine; UC Riverside; UC San Diego; and UC Santa Cruz. Our local community colleges, Ventura, Moorpark, and Oxnard will also be represented.

Private colleges will include Point Loma Nazarene, University of San Diego, Cal Lutheran and Columbia College,
U.S. Forest Service as well as Southern California Consortium.

Many students will have representatives of their college choice here and it will give them an opportunity to ask specific questions about choosing a major, scholarships, campus, dorms, tour dates, academic requirements and paperwork they must complete in order to be accepted. Higher Ed Week emphasizes the importance of making an informed decision on where to attend college.

Many congratulations to the Fillmore Flashes Football team on their victorious win over Bishop Diego this past Friday. The first home game of the football season is this Friday September 25! Be sure to come out and support the team and show your Flashes pride. The first Renaissance night of the school year is being held on Wednesday at a new venue; the Sespe Auditorium at the District Office. The theme this year is Renaissance Round Up, a flashback to the old west. Renaissance scholars from the past school year who reached a 3.5 and above will be honored. In other academic news, the high school exceeded their API goal from the previous year. We were supposed to reach a goal of 700 and accomplished a 725. Students will be recognized throughout the year with reward cards and an API Celebration Day is planned for the spring.

1. SCHEDULE CHANGING PROCEDURE – Please DO NOT come INTO the office to change your schedule. Report to the ATTENDANCE
OFFICE WINDOW to sign up to see your counselor and wait to be called in. Please know that classes are VERY FULL, and you may not be
able to change.
2. Electronic equipment (cell phones, CD players, IPods, etc.) must be stored and turned off during class time and at school-time activities and
field trips or at any other time as directed by a district employee. If used at an after-school activity or field trip, the equipment must be used with
courtesy and not disrupt the activity. Equipment may be turned on and used during non-instructional time
such as before and after school or during nutrition and lunch breaks. They may not be turned
on or used during passing periods, which state law considers as instructional time. If disruption
occurs, an employee may direct the student to turn off the equipment and/or confiscate it until the end of the class period, school day or activity
or until a parent/guardian picks it up. Students are expected to use equipment in compliance with the Acceptable Use Agreement regarding use
of technology, which students and their parents have signed. Disruptive, discourteous, inappropriate or illegal use of the equipment could result
in disciplinary action including, but not limited to confiscation of the equipment, temporary or permanent loss of the privilege to have the
equipment at school or school activities, suspension, expulsion, or criminal charges. Students and parents are reminded that the school district

This school year any student that is served a cafeteria meal will need to bring their student ID card with them. If you do
not bring your ID card you will have to wait until all the other students have been served and then you will go through a
special serving line.
The new Snack Shop will be opening by September! Stop by and check it out!
4. CONCERT BAND STUDENTS – Report to Rm. 19 at 3:30 for your 7th period band class.
5. Travel and adventure are just around the corner! Ms Hoffman is looking into organizing a trip to Paris in late May. You don’t need to speak
French to go and the opportunity is open to all FHS students. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, come to the meeting next
Thursday at lunch in room 60 (upstairs). It does cost money, and there are no scholarships. Details and handouts for you to bring home will be
provided.
6. A big THANK YOU from Ms. Hoffman and Mrs. Ramirez to the ASB students who helped pass out books during registration. If you volunteered
for us and did not receive your $5 “fine forgiveness coupon” from Ms. Hoffman, please come to the library and see her about it.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided at San Cayetano School. Buses will transport student home from San Cayetano School at 12:10 p.m.
Students enrolled in the CAHSEE classes will be able to take the CAHSEE exam during the third week of July. Please turn in your Notice of
Summer School letter to Mr. Torres or Ms. Green.
3. There are 5 summer school student tutor positions available for 10th or 11th grade students. You may earn 5 TA credits. If you are interested,
see Mrs. Green.
4. Art Club is selling autograph books for $5. See any art club member or come to room 34 to buy one.

is putting on its 2nd annual Youth Business and Leadership Academy July 13, 14 and 15 at Ventura College East Campus in Santa Paula. The
academy will focus on business strategy, marketing and leadership skills. These interactive sessions will be taught by real entrepreneurs and
business consultants with guest speakers who are successful business people within our local community. For a registration packet see Ms.
Norma ASAP.
