Lions Club Donates $500 Check to Fillmore’s AYSO 242 Soccer Program

On Monday, September 18, 2023, Fillmore Lions Club President Stephen McKeown (left) presented Arnold Munoz, Regional Commissioner for Fillmore’s AYSO 242, a check for $500 in support of the ever-growing soccer program. The program has grown so quickly this year that it is now the largest youth organization in the city of Fillmore. Lions Club is proud to support the local community. AYSO is completely volunteer supported and relies heavily on the community for support. Lions Club is kicking off their pre-sale tickets for their Annual Enchilada Dinner Fundraiser. Driver Safety for Teens Class Educates Young Drivers

A Driver Safety class was presented by the Fillmore Police Department on Monday, September 18, at the Fillmore Library. The event drew about a dozen young drivers and soon-to-be drivers. The 2-hour class included: helping newly and future licensed teenage drivers understand the responsibilities associated with driving a motor vehicle; show how a poor choice behind the wheel can change the lives of everyone involved; and help reduce the number teen-related injuries and deaths due to vehicle collisions. On Monday, September 11th, Fillmore City Fire Department held a memorial ceremony marking the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. The memorial began at 6:30am. The American flag was raised promptly at 6:55am. Let us remember the sacrifices made by so many that morning. From the everyday heroes who helped save perfect strangers, to the first responders who walked toward danger in hopes of helping anyone they could, they were all a shining example of how we can easily come together in times of national crisis. We will never forget those brave individuals, and we will never forget September 11th, 2001.

 
Sewer Repair to be Completed by Next Week

Work on the sewer repair is almost over! The new sewer line and the manholes have been completed and the sewer by-pass pumps were turned off as of Friday, September 1, according to Troy Spayd, Fillmore City Municipal Service Director. The sewage has been flowing since then and the contractors are working on making road repairs and demobilizing the equipment. Paving has begun and will last through Thursday, Sept. 14. Then there will be restriping that needs to take place. Most of the work will be completed by the end of this week, with everything finished by end of next week. The cost of the extensive repair that took place after storm damage to the sewer on March 16 was almost $4 million. In and out-of-town traffic has been greatly impacted by Highway 126 and street closures, and the community is relieved the roadwork is ending. Photo credit Angel Esquivel-AE News.

California United FC 2013 girls traveled to Florida Labor Day weekend to compete in the Tampa Cup. The team was bumped into an older division due to teams dropping out after Hurricane Idalia hit only three days earlier. They battled the entire weekend in hot temperatures and high humidity to finish in 3rd place. Keep striving, girls! Weekend scores are as follows:

DUI Arrest Made in 2-Vehicle Collision

On Sunday, September 3, 2023, at 8:38pm, a 2-vehicle collision occurred at A Street Bridge, south of Ventura Street. One of the drivers was on probation for a prior DUI violation. The male subject was determined to be the party at fault and provided a breath sample per his probation terms. The subject was found to be operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit and was arrested for violation of VC 23152(b) and VC 23153(a) and booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility without incident. Ambulance was requested for the other (female) driver; it is not known if she was transported. Photo credit Angel Esquivel-AE News.
