Sacramento – California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director Dr. Karen Smith today announced that CDPH is investigating a cluster of Salmonella cases that has so far sickened 31 California residents in six counties. The California cluster is part of a multi-state Salmonella Paratyphi B outbreak that is likely linked to consumption of raw tuna commonly used in sushi. As of May 21, 2015, 53 cases have been reported in nine states, including 31 in California. “As the investigation continues, this is a good reminder to Californians that there are sometimes risks when eating raw or undercooked meats, fish or poultry,” said Dr. Smith. “This is particularly true for young children, the elderly, or people with Most of the patients reported eating sushi containing raw tuna. To date, 10 patients have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. The outbreak appears to be ongoing. The California case-patients reside in six Southern California counties, including Los Angeles (nine), Orange (six), Riverside (four), San Diego (seven), Santa Barbara (one), and Ventura (four). Illness dates have ranged from March 5, 2015 through May 13, 2015. The ages of the patients range from less than one to 83 years. CDPH, state and local health departments, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are continuing to investigate the source of the outbreak. CDPH’s Division of Communicable Disease Control will continue to monitor for additional cases with a matching strain, coordinate follow-up of possible cases and review epidemiological data to further evaluate the source of the outbreak. CDPH’s Food and Drug Branch, in coordination with FDA and food safety partners in other state and local health departments are continuing efforts to trace food distributors and sources from sushi restaurants named by case patients. Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. Most patients recover without any treatment, however, some patients may need to be hospitalized because of the severity of the diarrhea. The disease can cause death if not treated promptly.  A stabbing took place on Saturday, May 16, at approximately 6:20pm. The victim received multiple stab wounds in the gang-related attack. The first medical call went out for the Palm and Santa Clara Street area. The victim was later located in the 100 block of Surrey Way and treated, above. He was transferred to Ventura County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Police cordoned off the Palm/Santa Clara area, above. Suspect Daniel Torres has been arrested.  Daniel Torres On the evening of May 16, 2015, Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 500 block of Santa Clara St. in Fillmore, where it was reported that a male suspect had attacked and stabbed a man with a knife. The wounded victim fled to a nearby residence, where he was given first aid and transported to Ventura County Medical Center with serious wounds to his upper & lower body. During the initial investigation, detectives were able to identify the suspect as Daniel Torres and determined that the attack was gang related. On May 18, 2015, detectives from the Sheriff’s Gang Unit and Major Crimes Bureau located (S) Torres as he left a residence in the City of San Bernardino. Torres was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility, where he was booked on charges of Attempt Murder and Committing a Crime for the Benefit of a Criminal Street Gang. After a rigorous grading process and reading of every autobiography handed in by all 54 students, the Scholarship Committee is proud to introduce the 2015 Fillmore High Alumni Scholars.  California Highway Patrol A Santa Paula woman was killed on Thursday, May 14th in a two-vehicle traffic collision between El Rio and Saticoy. An 85-year old Fillmore woman was injured in the crash. The accident occurred before 4:30pm on Vineyard Avenue, near Highway 118. The 30-year old woman was driving a Mustang southbound on Vineyard, when she drifted into the northbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Fillmore resident, driving a Buick, was unable to avoid the collision and was trapped in her car. She had to be extricated by firefighters, and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with a broken sternum. Alcohol consumption by the deceased may have been a factor, according to the CHP. Vineyard was shut down for about two hours. |
