Deputy Shoots Pitbull During Attack

Ventura County Sheriff's Department A deputy was forced to shoot a pitbull Tuesday morning to thwart an attack while he was trying to contact a probationer outside her home north of Ventura. The deputy observed a woman on the street and recognized her as a local probationer. The deputy tried to contact the woman, but she fled into a nearby residence. As she opened the door and went inside, a pitbull ran out of the house and tried to attack the deputy. The deputy tried to stop the attack at first by using his baton, but the dog continued to advance aggressively toward him. Fearing he was going to be bitten by the dog, the deputy drew his handgun and fired at the dog, wounding it. The dog was taken by Ventura County Animal Services for treatment and is expected to survive. Animal Services will keep the dog until the owner is identified.
