Dialing 9-1-1, Not 1-1-2

Ventura County Sheriff's Department Recent articles posted on social media networks and Internet blogs suggest people in the United States can call 1-1-2 for a more efficient connection to emergency dispatchers than with 9-1-1. That information is incorrect. The 9-1-1 system is the established method for contacting emergency dispatchers within the United States, while 1-1-2 is the emergency number used throughout Europe. Some wireless service providers have their phone systems programmed to recognize both as emergency numbers and route them appropriately. However, that is not the case with all phone systems. People should dial 9-1-1 to report an emergency in the United States. Dialing 1-1-2 may not connect to an emergency dispatcher, and could waste valuable time during an emergency. The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people to utilize 9-1-1 only during emergencies, and to call (805)654-9511 when requesting a deputy for a report or other routine requests.
