DUI Driver / Non-Injury Accident

Santa Paula Police Department On 10-01-13 at approximately 2031 hours, an off-duty Santa Paula Police detective was driving westbound on the 126 freeway west of Briggs Road when he observed a vehicle approaching from behind at a high rate of speed. The vehicle passed the off-duty detective in the dirt center median. As the vehicle re-entered onto the freeway it lost control resulting in a solo vehicle accident. The off-duty detective then made contact with the occupants of the vehicle. The driver, Marcos Hinojosa, responded to officers commands to lie on the ground however the passenger attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle that was just involved in the accident. The vehicle was too badly damaged and was undriveable. The passenger then fled from the vehicle northbound across the dirt field. A search of the field met with negative results. The driver was found to be intoxicated with a blood alcohol lever of .18 BAC, which is twice the legal limit. Hinojosa was later transported to Ventura County Main Jail for DUI.
