You can help prevent identity theft by using paper shredders to destroy bills and important documents, using locked mailboxes, and by not giving out your personal information over the phone or the internet. Banks and credit organizations will never call you and ask you for your pin code, or Social Security number. Once a year you should check your credit history to ensure you do not have any unauthorized accounts on your credit.
