Jerry Bohannon was reported missing by Sheriff’s detectives in February 2012. There were few leads to work with during the initial missing person report. During the subsequent 7-month investigation, detectives from the Ventura Police Department assisted Sheriff’s detectives interviewing numerous people living in and working around the Ventura River area. On August 9, Bohannon’s body was found in the riverbed during a search. Based on their investigation, detectives believed it was likely Bohannon met with foul play.

The search of the Ventura River area was conducted utilizing Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Search and Rescue cadaver dogs, Homicide detectives, and Sheriff’s patrol deputies. Bohannon’s body was located in a shallow grave by Search and Rescue team members. The body was exhumed with the assistance of Forensic Scientists from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Crime Lab. Ventura County Medical Examiners also responded and determined, after an autopsy, that Bohannon was the victim of a homicide.
