A man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon after he attacked a deputy and tried to take her firearm.

The Sheriff’s Office had received a call that the suspect was walking in the middle of Ventura Avenue, shouting and waving his hands.

When a deputy arrived at the scene, the suspect would not respond to anything the deputy said. An independent eyewitness at the scene said the suspect physically attacked the deputy and punched her in the face, nearly knocking her to the ground. The suspect then tried to grab the deputy’s firearm and threatened to kill her.

Injured, bleeding, and fearing for her life, the deputy drew her firearm and shot the suspect, who later died at a local hospital. The suspect’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
