Skimming Device Arrests, Chase Bank

 Ventura County Sheriff's Department On February 5, 2012, Thousand Oaks Police Department Detectives, Patrol, and United States Secret Service worked together to arrest two suspects for their involvement in placing a skimmer device at the Chase Bank branch located at the 1600 block of North Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks. The suspects attached a device, which captures the bank customer access card account information embedded on the customer’s credit card magnetic stripe. This device was affixed onto the ATM door entry vestibule. In addition, video recording equipment was attached to the ATM with a view of the PIN (personal identification number) entry keypad. The skimmer secretly captured the victims’ credit card account information as the credit cards were swiped on the exterior door card reader. The victims’ PIN numbers were secretly captured by the video equipment above the keypad. Had the suspects not been apprehended, there would have been over 90 victims related to this case. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to make the public aware that a different card containing a magnetic stripe should be used to gain entry to an ATM vestibule. For example, a grocery store rewards card or gift card with a magnetic strip should open the exterior door to access the ATM vestibule.
