Richard Jess Cadena Jr. (Rick) passed away on November 2, 2024, at City of Hope in Duarte, California, at 59. He was surrounded by loved ones and friends when he passed.
The son of Rick Cadena Sr. and Janet Cadena, Rick was born in Santa Paula, California, on April 16, 1965. He spent his first five years living in Piru, until his family moved to Fillmore. Rick went to school in Fillmore, graduating from Fillmore High School, where he competed in football and track. He also played softball and trained in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
Rick’s professional life was marked by dedication and hard work. He started his career in construction, then worked as an exterminator and for Fillmore Piru Citrus. His journey led him to Ventura County Public Works, where he spent more than 30 years, eventually becoming the superintendent of watershed protection.
Rick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed camping, watching old monster movies and documentaries, reading, visiting museums, and playing in pool tournaments. He was a self-taught harmonica player.
Rick had a playful side, but his love for his family was always at the forefront. He was a good friend to those who knew him and enjoyed entertaining his friends and family with jokes and pranks…some may remember a costume he donned on a cruise ship, while others may recall his graduation prank in 1983. He sure kept us laughing!
Rick was immensely proud of his family and kids, and his love for them was enduring. He leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Cindy; sons Joshua, David, and Ricky; and daughter Janaye; brother Michael and wife Michelle, and brother Josh; and uncles Roger and wife Kathy and Victor and wife Pat. Rick was preceded in death by his parents Rick and Janet.
In closing, we want to share one more joyful detail about Rick. His love for live music was unparalleled, and he would always jump at the chance to play his harmonica alongside any band. The harmonica, with its portability and fun, was a perfect match for Rick’s vibrant spirit. As we bid farewell to Rick, we can’t help but imagine a harmonica tucked into his pocket, ready to bring joy and laughter to those who have gone before him. We love you, Rick.
