Local teachers receive awards

Fillmore Educators Jennifer Beal, Fillmore Middle School; Ann Wade, Fillmore Middle School, and Pam Leonard, Mt Vista Elementary School were recently hosted as awardees at the California Teachers Association /NEA Channel Islands Service Center Council Awards Banquet. Jennifer Beal, a long time History and Yearbook Teacher at FMS and also a History Teacher at Moorpark Junior College received the WHO Award. Jennifer was recognized for her outstanding Fillmore Unified Teachers Association (FUTA) Union Representation, Grievance Chair, Bargaining Chair and Elections Chair work. Jennifer is methodical in thinking a problem through using the contract as the basis for decision making. Jennifer was presented the WHO Award by the FUTA President and Fillmore High School Teacher, Theresa Marvel who noted that Ms. Beal was a President's dream as she is willing to step forward and lend a helping hand. Jennifer, Theresa shared, is a stickler for detail and following through with the task at hand. Ann Wade who is a FHS Graduate and a Language Arts Teacher at FMS. Ann was recognized for her outstanding FUTA service as the Union Secretary and a member of the Bargaining Team. Ann was presented the WHO Award by Maureen Speakman the FUTA Channel Island Representative and Special Education Teacher at FMS. Ann received her award as recognition by CTA for her many years of service as the "keeper of the record and the words" for the Teachers Union. Maureen spoke, in presenting Ann with the coveted WHO Award, about Ann's ability to process documents and records at the bargaining table while also keeping track of proceedings. Ann's talents as keeper of the record and the words is benefits all members of the Fillmore Unified Teachers Union. Pam Leonard a long time teacher in FUSD. She started as the Home Economics, French and Child Development Teacher at Fillmore High School. Pam left secondary education to help new teachers through the PARS program. When the program ended she went back to the classroom to teach at the elementary level. She will be retiring at the end of the academic year from Mountain Vista Elementary School as a fifth grade teacher. Pam received the Outstanding Educator Award for her expertise as an educator and her involvement in FUTA. She has taught for 32 years and her students have benefited from her knowledge of curriculum and her outstanding ability to reach each and every student. Pam has served many years as a Union Representative and as a member of the Bargaining Team. In presenting the Outstanding Educator Award to Pam her fellow Mt Vista fifth grade teacher, Sandra Butts shared the just like her work in the classroom with students, Pam brought to the Union members clarity of though and commitment to the real reason why we do what we do - love for our students.
