Free tax service is provided each Tuesday from 9-11 at the Senior Center in Fillmore. No appointment is necessary, so anyone that is low to moderate income is welcome to avail themselves of this help.
AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service, is now operating at full tilt. About 35,000 trained volunteers are helping at 6500 sites and Fillmore Senior Center is one of them.
These volunteers need you to bring a copy of your 2008 tax return, your social security number and any W-2 or 1099 form you have for 2009. All information is confidential. The last day for the office is April 13th, so come and avail yourself of this service free of charge.
With the 2010 census forms “on the way” many will be filling those out and returning. If older seniors need help, come to the Center for assistance. Most of the questions are simple and everyone will probably be able to mark their answers.
People with a post office box, and a few others, may have someone calling at their door in a few weeks. Never open your door for someone you do not personally know. Census representative will have a photo ID and you should ask to see that before giving them any information. The worker will use a hand-held devise to record your information, a canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. THEY WILL NOT ASK FOR YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, BANK OR CREDIT CARD INFO. Do not give that to anyone who comes to your door.
