FGS 14 & Under All Stars come home with Bronze Medal

On Thursday, July 16th Fillmore Girls Softball 14 & under All-Star team headed down to San Diego to compete in the California State Games Junior Olympic competition. On Friday afternoon the girls had their first game against Aliso Viejo. Aliso scored first in the top of the third with one run. Paula Laureano crossed the plate for Fillmores first run of the game tying it up in the bottom of the sixth inning. The girls played solid defense in the seventh holding Aliso to no runs. Jaynessa Lopez starting off the seventh inning with a single followed by Reina Magana. Marissa Vasquez walked to load the bases. With time expired Kaylee Hinklin stepped up to the plate and took her base bringing in the winning run. Friday evening the players, coaches, and all the great Fillmore fans would travel to Qualcomm stadium for opening ceremonies. On Saturday morning, Fillmore played against San Juan Capistrano. Chellie Arreguin scored the first run in the top of the first inning with the help of Amanda Vassaur and Jaynessa Lopez. SJC came back with force scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fillmore came back in the fifth, Karinna Carrillo started off with a walk followed by Arreguin and Amber Magana. Vassaur singled, bringing in two runs. Lopez and Reina Magana both walked bringing A. Magana across the plate to close the gap 5 - 4. SJC would score again in the bottom of the fifth inning winning the game 6-4 dropping Fillmore to the losers bracket. At 3:00pm against Upland, Fillmore started off the inning with a walk by Anyssa Cabral, Chellie Arreguin, and A. Magana. Cabral scored on a pass ball giving us our first run. Fillmore came back in the top of the second with runs scored by Cabral, A. Magana, Laureano, and Tatyana Gonzales. Vassaur whacked the ball for a triple knocking in two of the four runs. Upland scored two more runs in the fourth making it a 5-3 game. Fillmore did not score the next two innings giving Upland the opportunity to come back. In the bottom of the 6th Upland would came back with two runs tying the game 5 all. Game time had expired, Fillmore would have to play in an international tie breaker. Hinklin strated the inning off courtesy running for A. Magana at second base, with one out Mary Ortiz comes to the plate and hits a single bringing in Hinklin. Lopez gets on with a fielders choice. Lopez stealesl second and scores on a solid hit by R. Magana. Upland came up chasing two runs but that would not slow them down scoring two runs tying the game up again 7-7. Starting the second international tie breaker in the eigth inning Fillmore would show that they wanted it. Lauriano would start off at second base Gonzales would get a single moving Lauriano to third base. Cabral would reach base on an error loading up the bases for Arreguin. Arreguin would rip the ball getting a triple and scoring three runs. With no outs A. Magana would single in Arreguin followed by Vassaur getting a double bringing in A. Magana. Vassaur would eventually score making it a 13-7 score. Fillmores defense was to much for Upland holding them to only one run to win the game 13-8. At 8:15pm Fillmore would meet up against Antelope Valley who defeated them in the championship game at the district tournament. Antelope Valley would take the early lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring one. Reina Magana started off the inning with a walk followed by Kaylee Hinklin in the top of the third inning. Anyssa Cabral would get a single bringing in R. Magana followed by Chellie Arreguin getting a walk. Amber Magana would get a single bringing in Cabral for the second run of the inning. Fillmore would hold Antelope Valley the next four innings winning the game 2-1. At 8:00am Sunday, Fillmore would meet up against West Whittier. West Whittier would be the first to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning but Fillmore would come back in the top of the second inning. Mary Ortiz would reach base on a throwing error then take second and third on pass balls. Jaynessa Lopez would get first base on four straight balls but would continue on to second drawing the catcher to over throw the ball scoring Ortiz and Lopez would advance to third. Paula Lauriano would walk and advance to second base. Lopez and Lauriano would score on a single by Anyssa Cabral making it a 3-2 game in Fillmores favor. Marissa Vasquez would start the third inning getting hit by the pitch and eventually would score on a hit by Ortiz. Fillmores defense was outstanding holding W. Whittier to no more runs. Fillmore would continue being patient at the plate with walks by Cabral, and Vasquez. Amanda Vassaur would connect for a double bringing in two runs. Eventually Vassaur and Lopez would score. Fillmore would come up on top once again with an 8-2 victory. Fillmore would continue the battle against Clairemont at 9:45am. Fillmore took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Amber Magana would get on with a single and Amanda Vassaurs bat would stay hot hitting a triple to score A. Magana. In the bottom of the second inning our girls were on fire Jaynessa Lopez would start the inning off with a single. Paula Lauriano would reach first on an error followed by Kaylee Hinklin and Tatyana Gonzales both making it to base on a fielders choice. Anyssa Cabral would get hit by a pitch followed by Chellie Arreguin getting walked and Amber Magana would connect for a single with a total of five runs coming across the plate. Clairemont would come back in the top of the third inning scoring three runs then another three runs in the top of the fourth inning. With a tie score going into the sixth inning and time running out Fillmore would hold them to no runs. Arreguin would be the first to the plate getting a single. Deanna Magana would take over the running for Arreguin. A. Magana would come up smashing the ball for a double and advancing D. Magana to third base. Amanda Vassaur hit a fly ball to center field and the center fielder would drop it scoring D. Magana for the win with a score of Fillmore 7 Clairemont 6. Fillmore would have to meet up against San Juan Capistrano for the second time in the tournament. SJC would score their first run in the top of the first inning. SJC would come full force in the top of the second inning with a grand slam making it a 5-0 ball game. Candice Stines would see her first plate apperance in the bottom of the second inning getting a single but could not be advanced. SJC would score one more run in the top of the third inning but Fillmore would not give up. It took the girls some time to warm up but in the bottom of the fifth inning Tatyana Gonzales would start the inning with a single followed by Karinna Carrillo also with a single. Anyssa Cabral would take her base then Chellie Arreguin would triple scoring Gonzales, Carrillo, and Cabral. With a 6-3 score going into the bottom of the sixth inning down by 3 Fillmore would give it their all. Lopez would start the inning with a single and would eventually score but that would not be enough to win. Fillmore fell short to San Juan Capistrano 6-4. The girls played fantastic softball and placed third out of sixteen teams receiving the Bronze medal. All 15 young ladies contributed to being such a succesful team. Amber Magana pitched every game with the assistance of Anyssa Cabral. Amber pitched with confidance and determination throughout the seven games. Anyssa was brought up from the 12 & under division as a back up pitcher/utility player and played very well. Karinna Carrillo was amazing behind the plate catching for both A. Magana and Cabral. Karinna played outstanding softball all seven games. Karinna caught for 45 innings, 132 outs and to many pitches to count!!
