Flashes Girls Wrestling Competes at Hueneme High School’s “Showdown at the Shore”

Photos credit Jimmy Torres Jr. Story by Girls Head Coach Michael Torres Saturday, December 14, 2024, Port Hueneme, CA – The Fillmore High School Girls Wrestling Team competed at the Showdown at the Shore Girls Wrestling Tournament held at Hueneme High School. Despite being short-handed due to illness affecting several of the athletes that were unable to participate, the team’s resilience and determination were on full display, with standout performances from several wrestlers, including co-captains Emma Torres and Alexa Martinez. Senior Emma Torres, one of the team’s co-captains, had an exceptional outing at the tournament, competing in a highly competitive 16-girl bracket at 130 lbs. Emma finished in second place with a 3-1 record, including three pins. Torres has an overall record of 10-3 this season, with 7 takedowns, 6 near falls, 4 reversals, and 7 pins. Fellow co-captain Alexa Martinez, also a senior, added to the team’s success at the tournament by finishing in third place in the 145 lb bracket. Like Torres, Martinez wrestled in a competitive 16-girl field, compiling a 3-1 record, including 3 pins. Martinez, with a season record of 13-3, has had a remarkable year, with 9 takedowns, 3 near falls, 3 reversals, 1 escape, and 10 pins. The younger athletes on the team also delivered impressive results. Sophomore Naomi Bonilla continued her standout season by finishing in 4th place at 120 lbs, with a 4-2 record. Bonilla’s performance included 1 pin and 3 decisions, improving her overall season record to an outstanding 10-2, with 15 takedowns, 6 near falls, 2 reversals, 1 escape, and 5 pins. Sophomore Yoseline Cruz, competing in the same weight class, went 2-2 in the tournament, while Junior Skyla Sandoval placed 2nd in the 135 lb B Bracket earning a silver medal, finishing with a 1-1 record. Junior Michele Pinedo also made her mark in the 125 lb B Bracket, going 1-1 with a pin. Freshman Jasmine Contreras competed at 120 lbs, going 0-1, while Senior Christine Panopio fought hard in the 135 lb bracket but finished with a 0-2 record. Senior Ava Manzano rounded out the team’s performance with a 2-2 record in the 235 lb weight class. Girls Head Coach Michael Torres commended the athletes. “The girls represented Fillmore well. Alexa and Emma continue to battle with the top girls in our section and Naomi showed that she can medal at the varsity level. While we were short a few athletes due to illness, those who were able to compete gave it their all,” Coach Torres said. The Fillmore Flashes’ will host two Citrus Coast League home meets on Wednesday, January 8th vs. Channel Island HS (Youth Night) and Wednesday, January 15th vs. Nordhoff HS (Senior Night) both matches are scheduled to start at 5:30pm at the FHS Gym.
