With Spring just underway, The Heritage Valley Blazers track and field team had plenty of bounce in their step as they competed on Saturday, April 6, 2019, in the fourth meet of the season. This was the third meet the club hosted at Fillmore High School, which saw some of our local athletes competing for victory as well as personal records against the Thousand Oaks Flyers.

3200m distance runners this week were Niza Laureano placing first in 12.19.63 (girls/11-12); Lindsey Ramirez 11:43.31 and Carolina Garcia 12:25.97 (girls/13-14).

Combing speed and endurance in middle distance in the 1600m run were Aaliyah Tarango 7:50.37 (girls/7-8) first; Abel Arana with a PR of 6:04.64 for first (boys/9-10). Paola Estrada 5:50.26 first and Kaylani Perez 6:07.99 second, both in (girls/9-10); Niza Laureano 5:52.44 (girls/11-12); and Peter Kuebler a PR of 5:17.76 for first (boys/15-16). In the 800m run, Carlee Perez 3:52.94 first (girls/7-8); Paola Estrada 2:43.00 first (girls/9-10); Lindsey Ramirez 2:26.12 first (girls/13-14); and Timothy Pillado II 2:45.56 first with teammate Santiago Felix second (boys/9-10).

Distance runner gone Sprinter was Lucy Zuniga (girls/7-8) who has been blazing a trail in every single event she races. This week she placed first in the 100m, 200m, and 400m Dash, putting her in the top rankings for Ventura County. Also placing first in the 200m Dash, was Vincent Halcon 38.86 (boys/7-8); Leah Barragan 29:50 (girls/11-12); and Albert Penuelas 28.50 (boys/11-12). In the 400m Dash, HV Blazers had four in a row across the finish line in the (girls/9-10) with Jasmine Gonzalez 75.98, Sarah Cedillos, D’Andra Amezcua and Aliana Manzano, in order. Leah Barragan, first with a PR of 68.93, also PR’s right behind her were Destiny Cardona in 3rd 76.39 and Jaelyn Castro, 4th with 76.96 (girls/11-12); Kaliz Perez PR of 66.03 for first (girls 13-14); and John Paul Mohun 57.80 also first (boys/15-16).

In the 4x400m relay, Jacob Martinez, Evan Ramirez, Isaiah Morales and Rodrigo Castillo took the win with a time of 5:18.49 (boys/9-10).

Long Jump leapers impressed with jumps of 16-09.50 for Diego Amezcua; John Paul Mohun 16-02.00 and Joseph Collins all in (boys/15-16).

Throws saw Carlos Esquivel PR with a throw of 17-01.50 (boys 9-10); Nathan Alcantar threw 28-06.25 in (boys/11-12) for first; and continuing to dominate the field were Celeste Velazquez, with a distance throw of 31-03.50 in (girls/13-14) and Kade Larson first 34-04.50 (boys/13-14).

Next on the schedule sees the Blazers traveling to Oxnard High School to compete in the 10th Annual Southern California Youth Invitational on Saturday, April 13th and Sunday 14th, 2019.

The Heritage Valley Blazers is the only local youth track and field club covering Fillmore, Santa Paula, and Piru that provides training in running and field events for both first time and experienced youth athletes ages 6-16. Youth Track & Field

FILLMORE, CA - This past weekend saw the return of the Heritage Valley Blazers to the Fillmore High School Track for their second of four scheduled home meets. The Blazers went foot-to-foot with a strong team representing The Newbury Park Panthers.

A day’s worth of events started off early with Blazer athletes taking over the 3200m run with victories by Niza Laureano (11-12/girls) in 12.22.97 and by Carolina Garcia (13-14/girls) with a time of 13.00.37.

One of track and field’s most challenging events, hurdles, saw victory for Noah Halcon (11-12/boys) who pulled out the win in a time of 17.06 in the 80m Hurdles 30” as well as for Benedict Collins (13-14/boys) in the 100m Hurdles 33” in a time of 20.06.

Blazers girls dominated the 100m dash by holding tight to victories in nearly all age groups. First place finishers include Destina Guzman (7-8/girls) in 21.44; C’Enna Uribe (9-10/girls) in 15.86; Leah Barragan (11-12/girls) in 14.12; and Jennifer Castillo (13-14/girls) in 14.27.

Middle distance saw outstanding performance and victory in the 1600m run for Lucy Zuniga (7-8/girls) in 7:19.33; Paola Estrada (9-10/girls) in 5:51.18; Niza Laureano (11-12/girls) in 5:47.87; and Ayden Marquez (9/10/boys) with a time of 6:01.76.

Field event long jumper, Jasmine Gonzalez (9-10/girls) went the distance to take first with a jump of 8-11-00 and Diego Amezcua (15-16/boys) went 15-11.00 for the victory.

Each week Blazer athletes train hard and bring forth their best in competition, team spirit, sportsmanship, and in reaching for their personal goals. The Heritage Valley Blazers would like to congratulate all athletes who competed this weekend.

Next on the schedule sees the Blazers on April 6th at home to take on the Thousand Oaks Flyers. Come support!

Fillmore Varsity Boys and Girls participated in the very competitive Ventura County High School Swim Championships last week at the Ventura Aquatic Center. Varsity Girls placed tied for 12th (out of 17 teams) beating Buena, Santa Paula Channel Islands and St. Bonaventure. Kat Furness placed second in the 50 yd. freestyle with a personal best time & new school record and she placed third in the 100 yd. backstroke. The Varsity Girls 200 yd. Medley Relay swim to a CIF Consideration time (Kat Furness, Yazmeen Gonzalez, Karen Trujillo & Zoe Avila). They also swim to a CIF Consideration time in the 200 yd. Freestyle Relay (Zoe Avila, Natalie Couse, Yazmeen Gonzalez & Kat Furness).

Varsity Boys placed 15th out of 17 teams beating Villanova and St. Bonaventure. All the boys swim well especially the final swim in the 400 yd. Freestyle relay dropping 14 seconds from their time. (Ricky Cadena, George Mooradian, James Chandler & Ethan Gray).

The Heritage Valley Blazers track and field club kicked off their season opener, Saturday, March 16, at the Fillmore High School Track. With laces tied tight and anticipation high, The Blazers welcomed the Ventura Tigres and saw youth participants of all skill levels, ages 6 to 16, taking part in running events, hurdles, relays, shot put, long jump, and high jump. After weeks of conditioning and training, the hard work paid off and the Blazers saw outstanding effort and performance by all. This week’s event highlights include:

The boys 100m dash (7-8yr) which saw all three top positions taken by Blazers (1) Aiden Arias 18.15; (2) Jacob Vazquez; (3) Vincent Halcon 19.21.

Double individual victories were seen for several athletes in the running events including Leah Barragan who took home two first place finishes in the 100m dash (11-12yr/girls) with a time of 14.24 and in the 200m dash (11-12yr/girls) with a time of 30.62. Aiden Arias ran to a first place finish in the 100m dash (7-8yr/boys) with a time of 18.15 and in the 400m dash (7-8yr/boys) with a time of 1:27.40. Likewise, Timothy Pillado II took home double individual victories in the 100m dash (9-10yr/boys) with a time of 14.97 and in the 400m dash (9-10yr/boys) in 70.96. Albert Penuelas took over the 100m (11-12yr/boys) with a time 13.94 and the 200m (11-12yr/boys) in 29.75. Paola Estrada gave an outstanding performance to win the 800m (9-10yr/girls) in a time of 2:46.22 and as well as the 1600 (9-10yr/girls) in 5:58.88. Peter Kuebler demonstrated his running skills in the 800m (15-16yr/boys) by running to victory in 2:29.67 and then in the 1600 (15-16yr/boys) in 5:33.77.

Blazer’s showed strong representation in fielding events with long jump victories for Isaiah Morales (9-10yr/boys) with a distance of 11-08.00 and for John Paul Mohun (15-16yr/boys) with a distance of 15-06.50. Shot Putters Celeste Velazquez (13-14yr/girls) threw a winning distance of 30-07.25 and Kade Larson (13-14yr/boys) grab victory by throwing 36-04.75.

The focus and design of the program is to see athletes throughout the Fillmore, Santa Paula, and Piru reach their full potential through positivity, sportsmanship, respect, and love for the sport. The Heritage Valley Blazers would like to thank all the volunteers and coaches for their support in achieving this goal.

Next on the schedule sees the Blazers traveling to Ojai on March 23rd to take on the Ojai Roadrunners.

Thursday February 7th the Flashes played in the first Round CIF Game Flashes fell short with a final score of 1- 3 Culver City. Goals: Yobany Figueroa 1.

 
On January 25th the Flashes hosted the Malibu Sharks and beat them with a final score of 7 – 0. The Flashes were led by Andrea Marruffo with 3 goals, 3 assist, Ana Covarrubias with 2 goals, 2 assist and Aaliah Alfaro, Breanna Lopez with goal each. Also the Lady Flashes recognized 7 seniors this year pictured above (l-r) seniors Breanna Lopez, Susie Garcia, Cecilia Cisneros, Sophia Garibay, Aaliyah Alfaro, Andrea Marruffo and Aaliyah Lopez. The Fillmore Flashes youth football and cheer formerly known as the Fillmore Bears will have sign ups this Friday January 18th at Ameci Pizza from 5-8pm. We are excited to truly represent our community and our high school alma mater by changing our nickname to the Flashes. We are the first youth organization to truly embrace our Fillmore mascot and we look forward to working alongside the current high school coaching staff and all those that have wanted a program that matches the name and colors of our beloved flashes nickname that started in 1913.

1-2-19 - FHS 39, Hueneme 50: The Flashes played extremely well in the league opener before losing to host Hueneme.
Leading for the Flashes: Jake Saviers, 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 4 steals; Roy Esquivel, 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 2 steals; Junior Maldonado, 8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

1-9-19 - FHS 68, Nordhoff 63: The Flashes visited Nordhoff for their second league game. It took two overtimes before the Flashes came away with the Victory. Nordhoff player hit a desperation 3 pointer as time expired to send game to OT. In the first OT it was back and forth with score being tied again after first OT.
In the 2nd OT, the Flashes were able to prevail; Jaysson Carillo hit 2 critical FT’S off the bench for an injured Junior Maldonado to secure the Victory, along with Roy Esquivel hitting timely shots.

The Flashes lost the home league opener to Santa Paula. The Flashes started strong, just couldn’t make the crucial shots down the stretch when needed.
