February 17th, Fillmore hosted AGBU from Canoga Park in the first round of playoffs and won 8-0. Andrea Marrufo scored 2 goals and 2 assist. Ana Cuvarrubias, Grace Topete, Alexis Mejia, Aaliyah Lopez, Yareli Vasquez, Lupita Ruvalcaba each had a goal. On Tuesday February 21st, the Lady Flashes traveled to Arroyo High School in El Monte for a second round CIF game. Fillmore had 14 shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Fillmore’s defense allowed 3 shots on goal. Fillmore lost 1-0.

Kendall Sosa

Kendall Sosa, grand-daughter of well-known Fillmore residents, Gilbert "Mo" and Betty Sosa, was recently recognized as an outstanding scholar-athlete at Normal Community High School, Bloomington, Illinois. Kendall's proud parents are Steve and Valerie Sosa. Steve was an outstanding three-sport athlete at Fillmore High School during his playing days.

Kenall played basketball for 11 years including 4 years at NCHS. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She was voted All-Conference First Team in basketball, soccer and volleyball and was All-Area 2nd team in basketball as well. Kendall was All-Sectional in soccer and All-Area Mention in volleyball. She also earned 18 Player of the Game Awards for the Lady Iron. She was MVP in Basketball and Soccer and voted Meathead of the Month. Last year she traded her athletic gear for a crown and was honored as NCHS Prom Queen.

Kendall's favorite Lady Iron Basketball memory is from her freshman year during the Holiday Classic. The Lady Iron were the underdogs but beat Normal West in double-overtime on her birthday! She hopes that her teammates remember to play basketball because they love it. They should always play hard but also have fun!!

Kendall will be attending Illinois Wesleyan University to study Business with a minor in Psychology. She will also be continuing her basketball career as a Titan!

Thursday February 9th, Fillmore Flashes Girls Frosh and J.V. traveled to Carpinteria, Flashes Frosh won 3-1 and JV won 1-0. Behind Aaliyah Lopez’s goal gave J.V. the league title.

Varsity's game was postponed to Friday. Where the Lady Flashes fell short 2-1. Ana Covarrubias scored the only goal. Fillmore finished second in league with an 11-3 record. Fillmore will host the winner of AGBU/Canoga park & Trinity Classical Academy in a first round playoff game on Thursdays 5pm. Please come out and support.

Fillmore AYSO 10-U champions, The Electric Teal Eels, will be heading to Bakersfield this weekend as it represents not only Fillmore but ALL of Ventura County at the Section 10 League Championship Tournament. After a great showing in Camarillo on the weekend of Nov. 19th and earning their invitation, the Eels have their sights set on another big run and have worked extremely hard, even in this cold and wet weather for a great showing this weekend.

The Eels will be playing at Kern County Soccer Park, 9400 Alfred Harrell Hwy, with game times scheduled on Saturday for 8 am – 10:45 am – 1pm. Please join us in wishing these ladies luck as they go out and represent our great small town.

Fillmore hosted Bishop Diego on 2-2-17. Andrea Marrufo & Ana Covarrubias each scored two goals. Valerie Hernandez and Aalyiah Alfaro each scored a goal. Ryan Nunez, Coby Cobian, Sophia Garibay and Alexis Mejia played well defensively. Fillmore won 6-0.

Fillmore traveled to Thacher on 2-4-17. The Lady Flashes came out strong taking a 2-0 lead in the first half goals from Ana Covarrubias & Andrea Marrufo. In the second half the Lady Flashes weren’t done, scoring three goals. Yareli Vasquez scored 2 goals off of nice crosses from Ryan Nunez and Valerie Hernandez added another. Ryan Nunez had 3 assist. Salma Gomez had 6 saves. Fillmore won 5-0.

JV also traveled to Thatcher and won 7-0 behind 4 goals by Aaliyah Lopez.

5-0 in league. The lady flashes go into the final week of league play in second place with a chance for a share of the league tile if they win it.

Wednesday February 1st, Fillmore High took on Cate High School J.V. lost 2-1 and Varsity won 3-1. First goal was made by Everardo Magaña off an assist by Joel Garza, second and third goal were made by Alejandro Rodriguez. Both goals were assisted by Jose Valdez.

Friday February 3rd, the Flashes played Carpinteria. Frosh/Soph lost 2-0, J.V. won 1-0 and Varsity won 3-2. Everardo Magaña scored the first goal off an assist by Enrique Gutierrez. Enrique Gutierrez scored off an assist by Joel Garza and Jose Valdez also had a goal off an assist from Alejandro Rodriguez.

Fillmore AYSO Soccer 10-U All-Star team scheduled to compete in Camarillo this weekend. Games will be held at 8AM and 1PM on Saturday at Pleasant Valley Fields in Camarillo.

Fillmore Flashes traveled to Nordoff on 1-28-1, Ana Cuvarrubias scored 3 goals, Valerie Hernandez 1 & Andrea Marrufo added 2 goals. Goalie Salma Gomez had 7 saves. Lady Flashes won 6-1. Fillmore Flashes Junior Varsity traveled to Nordoff on 1-28-17. Aaliyah Lopez had 2 goals, assisted by Anahi Andrade, Natalia Mejia played well
defensively. Lady Flashes won 2-0.

Fillmore hosted Villanova on 1-31-17, Ana Cuvarrubias scored 4 goals along with 2 assist giving her 24 league goals, leading all freshman in Southern California Division 7. Valerie Hernandez had 3 goals, Aaliyah Alfaro 2, Andrea Marrufo 2, Grace Topete, Danielle Negrete, Yareli Vasquez, Lupita Bravo and Anahi Andrade each scored a goal. Final score 16-0.

Fillmore freshman hosted Rio Mesa 1-31-17. Lady Flashes came up short loosing 2-0. The Lady Flashes played well.

Wednesday January 25th the J.V. boys tied against Grace Brethren 2-2. The Varsity boys lost against Grace Brethren 3-1. On Wednesday January 18th, Fillmore Flashes Boys Soccer team hosted Carpinteria. Frosh/Soph lost to Carpinteria 2-1 and J.V. beat Carpinteria 2-0. Flashes Varsity beat Carpinteria 2-1, with the first goal made by Enrique Gutierrez in a penalty kick. And the second goal made by Alex Gutierrez from an assist by Joel Garza.
On Friday January 20th, Fillmore hosted long time school rival Santa Paula as well as honored their Seniors by hosting Senior Night; Jesse Ballesteros, Cris Candelario, Ruben Rodriquez, Richard Estrella, Jauregui Onofre, Alex Gutierrez, Jaime Gonzalez, and Kevin Galvan.

The Flashes Frosh/Soph lost to Santa Paula 2-0, while J.V. tied with Santa Paula 2-2 in Friday night’s game. Fillmore’s Varsity however, defeated Santa Paula 1-0. With a goal made by Enrique Gutierrez off an assist from Joel Garza, and the FHS goal keeper Kevin Galvan had 13 saves. Fillmore Flashes new league record is 5-0-0. They look forward to hosting Nordoff at home this Friday J.V. begins at 4:30pm and Varsity at 6:00pm.

Fillmore Flashes Boys Varsity basketball team suffered league losses to Thacher 56-45 and Cate 74-58. They have won their last two league games. They defeated Foothill Technology 58-54 and Villanova Prep 64-49. The Frosh/Soph and the JV teams also won at Villanova. The Varsity is now 3-2 in league and faces Grace Brethren at home on Wednesday January 25th. The J.V. plays at 5:30pm and Varsity plays at 7pm.

Boy’s soccer this last week was good as we hosted Nordhoff High School and Cate High School. JV tied Nordhoff 2-2 on Wednesday January 11th and won on Friday January 13th, against Cate 7-0. Varsity got a 1-0 win with goal by Jose Valdez assisted by Enrique Gutierrez vs. Nordhoff. On Friday they won 2-1 against Cate with goals scored by Cris Candelario and the game winner by Joel Garza to get the Flashes to a 3-0 league start. This week with host Carpinteria on Wednesday, Frosh 3:00pm, JV 4:30pm, Varsity 6:00pm and on Friday they will host long time school rival’s Santa Paula frosh 3:00pm, JV 4:30pm and Varsity 6:00pm.

On Friday December 6th, Fillmore Boy’s Soccer team had it’s first league match against Grace Brethren High J.V. and Won 7-1 and Varsity Won 2-1 with goals were made by Joel Garza and the wining goal was by Moe Gutierrez assisted by Roland Cabrera. The Frosh team had a game against Royal High and Lost 1-0. Fillmore will be playing away at Cate on Friday December 13.

Both the JV and Varsity Boys Basketball teams won their opening league games against Grace Brethren. The JV won by a score of 50-29 and the Varsity won 77-51. Aries Vega led all scorers with 17pts. Daniel Gonzalez had 16pts and Aric Diaz finished with 12pts. The Flashes play their first home league game against Thacher on January 11th at 5:30pm and 7:00pm for Varsity, and will play away at Cate on Friday January 13th.

Wednesday December 28th Fillmore competed at the Buena Soccer Tournament, below are the scores for the overall tournament: Wednesday results: Fillmore 2-1 over Buena. Goals were scored by Jessie Ballesteros and Alex Rodriguez. Fillmore 0-6 loss vs. Pacifica High Thursday results: Fillmore 0-0 in regular time, but got the Win on PK 5-4 final over Rio Mesa. Shooters were Ruben Rodriguez, Everardo Magaña, Jose Valdez, Rolando Cabrerra, Diego Garcia, and Cristian Candelario made the final and winning goal. Played for 5th place where Fillmore Lossed 2-4 to Santa Barbara. Goals were scored by Everardo Magaña and Rolando Cabrerra.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Both of Fillmore High School’s Frosh/Soph and the JV won Consolation Championships at the Nordhoff tournament last week. The Frosh/Soph beat Santa Paul 44-40. Junior Maldonado lead all scorers with 23 points. The JV also defeated Santa Paula in the consolation game 57-50. Leading the way was Gregory Kraft with 20 points and Jaysson Carrillo 14 points.
