On this foggy Saturday morning, just after 6 a.m. a handful of community volunteers applied the finishing touches to “One River Stadium” at Warring Park in Piru. They began by chalking the infield in preparation of the first day of the long-awaited baseball season in Piru. This sport has not been organized in Piru for some years, but organizers say they now have 115 boys and girls signed up for T-ball and youth baseball.

This overwhelming response reflects the historic tradition of baseball in this family-oriented community. And, thanks to volunteers working as Piru Youth Sports, monies have been raised from various businesses, clubs and organizations to re-introduce baseball at an affordable level for local families. With seed money from a dormant organization, and major contributions from Fillmore-Piru Citrus Association, Piru Neighborhood Council, Rancho Temescal and the Carnales Motorcycle Club, entry fees for this 2009 Season were only $25 per child.

Preparations began in February as organizers recruited to fill team rosters. Not sure at first what the response would be, sign-ups have resulted in four t-ball teams and four youth baseball teams. By mid-April, over 100 youth had signed on and it was time to “play ball”. These volunteers have also been working tirelessly on bringing Warring Park baseball diamond and field up to a higher standard. CONTINUED »

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement after the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic to win the 2009 NBA Championship:

California is home to the best sports teams in the nation and once again the Lakers have made this state proud. I join all Californians in congratulating record-setting coach Phil Jackson, the entire Lakers organization and their fans on their 15th NBA championship.”

Ventura – Ladies come to tryout and join the Ventura Black Widows, Ventura County only women’s full contact football team for the 2010 season. We are looking for ladies with no, little and even prior football experience. You must be willing to learn football and have a great attitude. All sizes and skill level are welcomed to attend. The first tryout is Sunday, June 21st at the Ventura Community Park field #4, 901 S. Kimball Rd in Ventura. Please wear workout clothes, bring sports drink or water, a current copy of your health insurance card and the $55 fee. Come and be a part of the team as we battle against other clubs like the Boise Broncos and California Lynx. The season last from early May until late June.

Youth started arriving at 8 a.m. to pose for team and individual pictures in their crisp new uniforms. Heritage Valley Studios offered low cost photo packages for players’ families. “Look at the excitement in their eyes and smiles on the faces” said Gil Escoto, one of the organizers and President of the Piru Petroleum Club.
Just after 9 a.m. and as the skies turned from gray to blue, the teams took to the field for Opening Day Ceremonies. After the traditional first pitch it was time for the inaugural games. The season opened with two tee-ball games, featuring the Pirates v. Cardinals and followed by the Dodgers v. A’s. The afternoon youth baseball games matched up the Dodgers against the A’s. The final game of the day featured A’s against the Pirates. Games for this 2009 season will be held on Wednesday’s beginning at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday’s at 8:30 a.m. The season wraps up on July 11, 2009.

Fillmore High School Students Playing in the Ventura County All-Star Basketball Game! Three players from Fillmore High School have been selected to play in the Ventura County All-Star basketball game this Friday at Ventura High School!! Rebecca Herrera, Aimee Orozco and Noah Aguirre will represent FHS – girls’ game starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys’ game. Come support your Fillmore All-Stars!

Fillmore Youth Football would like to invite those interested in being a coach or an assistant coach, to attend our next board meeting. FHS Swim Team competed in the Frontier League Swim prelims and finals on May 6th and May 8th at Villanova Prep. Varsity Boys placed 3rd at the Championships in a best ever finish. Varsity girls were fifth and JV girls placed forth.

Aimee Orozco had an outstanding meet. She was Frontier League champion in the 100 yd. freestyle for the third year in a row. Her time (58.19) is a new team record and was a CIF automatic time which earns her the opportunity to complete in the Div. IV CIF Swimming Championships in Long Beach on Tuesday, May 12. Aimee was second in the 50 yd. freestyle (26.85 – CIF consideration time) with another new team record.

Other outstanding swims by Varsity Girls include: Megan Louth - 100 yd. butterfly (6th); Jazzmin Galvez – 50 yd. freestyle (10th) & 100 yd. Freestyle (6th); Julianne Sandoval – 100 yd. freestyle (10th) & 100 yd. breaststroke (10th); Natalie Garnica – 100 yd. breaststroke (8th); Andie McDonnell – new school record in the 100 yd. backstroke (8th) of 1:13.77 & 200 yd. freestyle (7th).

The varsity boys team had solid performances by: Kelly Bullard – 200 yd. freestyle (7th); Esteban Casas – 200 yd. freestyle (6th) & 100 yd. butterfly (6th); Hans Bergkamp – 50 yd. freestyle (11th) & 100 yd. freestyle (11th); Shane Ragatz – 50 yd. freestyle (7th) & 100 yd. breaststroke (4th); Ryder Bush – 100 yd. butterfly (5th) & 100 yd. backstroke (5th); Steven Garner – 100 breaststroke (5th).

JV Girls did well against very strong teams from Villanova, Nordhoff & Santa Clara. Carina Sandford was a double finalist – 100 yd. individual medley (5th) and 50 yd. butterfly (3rd); Yvonne Lomeli – 50 yd. butterfly (2nd); Susan Bolanos – 50 yd. freestyle (6th); Samantha Mchammel participated in both relays and Samantha Wu was a relay alternate.

Six out of seven FHS swim team relays came away with season best times.
