At Fillmore High School, seniors Aimee Orozco and Rebecca Herrera have been named co-captions of the 2008-2009 Lady Flashes Basketball Team by Varsity Coach, Harry Bums. Orozco, a forward-guard-wing player is the most versatile player on the team and she calls the defensive alignments. Herrera, the point guard, runs the offense and calls the plays with a series of hand signals.

“Rebecca has a very high basketball I.Q. and a calm, patient manner running our Stack and Motion Offense. Aimee, on the other hand, is a purely instinctive player who can shoot from the Dynamic Duo outside or drive to the basket almost at will. The players compliment each other well on the court and they are very deserving of this high honor” emphasizes Coach Bums.

Assistant Coach Amelia Aparicio designed the new Lady Flash logo using a photo of Aimee Orozco as she dribbled a basketball. There is a golden lightening bolt behind Aimee and this idea was voted in by the entire team. The logo represents all Lady Flashes basketball players.

Rebeca Isabel Herrera is the daughter of Jorge and Oralia Herrera. She is a 17 year old senior at FHS and she currently maintains a 4.34 GPA. She began her basketball career at the age of six where she excelled and became the starting point guard for the Varsity Lady Flashes since her freshmen year. Last year Rebeca was named to the 1s1 Team All Ventura County selection. She was also awarded Tri-Valley League Co-MVP last season. Ms. Herrera has shown great commitment to community service. She was Team Captain of the “A” Team for the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life’. Rebeca also Volunteers at St. Francis ofAssisi Church and for Soroptimist International of Fillmore. More importantly she has helped spearhead numerous benefi t concerts for several FHS and community organizations, proceeds were in excess of $60,0()(). Rebeca has applied to CSUN, UCLA, UCSD but she hopes to follow in her brother’s footsteps by attending UCLA. Rebeca Herrera is the Lady Flashes team Co-Captain and she has high aspirations for her team this season.

Aimee Orozco is the daughter of John and Tracy Orozco. She is a 17 year old senior, who is been playing basketball for 11 years. She has a 4.3 GPA and plans on studying Zoology as her Major in College. The schools she has applied to are San Francisco State, UC Davis, San Diego State, Humboldt, Cal Poly SLO and University
of Colorado where she hopes to play basketball and try out for the swimming team. Last year Aimee was 1st team All Tri-Valley and 2nd team All County. This past summer Aimee participated in NCAA sanctioned tournaments in Arizona, Oregon, Tennessee and Southern California. Aimee said “’Beka’ and I used to be rivals because she was my main competition in youth basketball, but now we are very close and our goals are the same for this basketball
season.” Aimee went on to say “we would like to be Tri-League Champions by ourselves and go deep into the CIF playoffs and make a drive for a CIF Championship”.

On Saturday November 15th the Lady Flashes Varsity Basketball Team had a BBQ at the residence of Ray and Antonia Galvez. The purpose of the BBQ was to build team unity for the 08-09 basketball season. Also, a new Lady Flash logo was introduced on royal blue t-shirts. The logo was designed by assistant varsity coach, Amelia Aparicio. It is a picture of a lightning bolt with an outline of Aimee Orozco, co-captain, of this year's team. Three senior starters spoke to the parents, team captain Aimee Orozco said the following "I'm glad we had a good turnout. Thank you for your support and hopefully we'll have it throughout the season." Senior leader Jill Wilber spoke to the parents and stated "The team and I are really excited about the season! We have high expectations and many goals. Our first goal is to win our tournament. Our second goal is to win our league as outright champs. Our ultimate goal is to win a CIF title. We have been working hard in practice so that we can achieve these goals. Another senior leader Kyla Hernandez asks the fathers to volunteer on a Saturday, to help paint their remodeled team room. The lady Flashes Varsity Team would like to thank El Pescador for donating the salad, rice, and beans for the team BBQ. Also, Vons of Fillmore for donating the water and Gatorade. The tri-tip and chicken was from an anonymous donor. All the girls want to express their heartfelt THANKS to Dr. Mike Bush of FUSD for being the chef at the BBO. Finally, Coach Burns thanked the Galvez Family for hosting the team BBQ.

Fillmore Flashes Varsity football team is going to the play-offs. They took Second place in the Frontier League. Fillmore will be playing at home this Friday November 21 at 7:30 p.m. against Desert High School. Perce's Kenpo Karate Studio recently held their annual inter-school karate tournament at Fillmore Middle School on October 18. The event was a success for the students as they competed against three other Ventura County studios.

Varsity Recap:
Fillmore Flashes open their season up with a 49-6 win over Villanova. According to Coach Dollar, “the offense executed and the defense played strong against a solid Villanova team. Nick Paz had 155 yards on 16 carries to lead the Flashes past the Wildcats. Christian Prado had over 10 tackles and Ralph Sandoval had a 72 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Flashes played against Villanova for their league opener, Estaban Vasquez had a great running game as a running back, Vasquez had a touch down and a 2 point conversion. Corey Cole threw a 40 yard pass to Ben Fernandez for a touch down, on a quarterback sneak Cole also added points to the score board. Johnny Golson had 2 touchdowns, 70 yard punt return and a 40 yard pass from Cole. The defense had an overall good game. Fillmore beat Villanova 32-0. The Flashes play Malibu this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. away.

On Friday October 31, 2008 Fillmore High School will host the 98th meeting between Santa Paula and Fillmore. This time honored tradition is anticipated by both cities as they join together yearly for this long awaited event. Due to the fact that this year it falls on Halloween, anyone dressed in costumes that are “Middle School Age” and above WILL NOT be allowed into the game. Fillmore High School apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause, but hopes you will understand that it is important to create a safe environment for all that attend.
