Delores Del Rio's 1928 silent movie "Ramona“ will be the feature attraction at the "Ramona Nights" fundraiser the evening of Saturday November 8 at Rancho Camulos Museum and National Historic Landmark. . The event also includes tapas, local wine, Ventura Limoncello tasting, and live music by harpist Xavier Montez. A panel of film historians will discuss the film and relate how this ”lost" film traveled from Nazi Germany, through the Soviet Union, and was found in the Czech Republic . This 81 minute classic restored by the Library of Congress re-premiered this spring at the Billy Wilder Theater of the Hammer Museum at UCLA to rave reviews. FREE Living History Festival November 8 at Rancho Camulos
Attend a FREE living history festival from 12-4 on Saturday November 8. Tour the historically significant buildings and beautiful grounds. Interact with historical characters and participate in rancho activities such as adobe brick making. Learn about the "Home of Ramona" from historian Phil Brigandi. (Camulos was one of the settings for Helen Hunt Jackson's California epic novel, "Ramona”). Watch the DW Griffith 1910 "Ramona" starring Mary Pickford which was filmed on location at Camulos and will be hosted by film historian, Hugh Munro Neely. See interesting new exhibits including artifacts that have not been accessible to the public for over 70 years. After celebrating their 50th anniversary this past month, Fillmore Women’s Service Club president Jeanne Klittich told her members it was time to put their hard earned money back into their community. She tasked Service Club members to find worthy causes that would improve and benefit the families that call Fillmore home. Service Club member Shelly Johnson teamed up with Fillmore FFA Booster president Scott Beylik and presented the plans for a new meats laboratory on the Fillmore School Farm. Years ago the previous meats lab had been ruined in the flooding of the Santa Clara River in 2005. With the help of the FFA Boosters, Scott Beylik and Rigo Landeros had new plans drawn, and the cement pad pored, but more funds were needed to erect the building.

The Fillmore Women’s Service Club voted to award $20,000 to the structure that will serve hundreds of Fillmore students for years to come. Shelly Johnson said’ “I wanted the club to put their money into something that would serve hundreds of students for years, possibly even decades.” She went on to talk about how she grew up in the butcher business and how teaching students about the meat industry is an important part of agriculture. Members of the Women’s Service Club, FFA Boosters, and Ag Advisory Board, gathered on the cement pad for the meats lab and presented the $20,000 check the Fillmore FFA officers, Agriculture teachers, and Principal.

On Friday, October 10th the Fillmore Women’s Service Club made two important organizations serving Fillmore smile as the club donated monies to them to improve their situation.

They met with the recipients at the Fillmore Police Station to give a check to both groups to fill their need to better operate while serving the citizens of Fillmore.

The first group was the Fillmore Volunteer Firefighters Foundation who received a check for $4500 toward replacing the outdated computers on their Fire Trucks. The new computers will be able to integrate with the county system, thereby improving all services. Attending were several members of the fire department led by Fire Chief Rigo Landeros. Club President Jeanne Klittich presented the check to Foundation Chairman Scott Beylik.

The second group receiving a donation of $1500 was the Fillmore Police Department. It will provide “CoolCop” devices for use in their patrol cars. The equipment permits each deputy to connect from the car’s air-conditioning system to their protective vests helping to maintain a semblance of comfort during our extremely hot weather. Accepting the check from Club President Jeanne Klittich was Fillmore Police Chief Dave Wareham as several very happy deputies and Club members looked on.

According to FWSC President Jeanne Klittich, the club donates their hard earned funds to worthwhile projects along with their scholarships to benefit as many in our community as possible. The Fillmore Women’s Service Club has been active in Fillmore for over 50 years and whose members work toward making Fillmore a better place to live.

One Step a la Vez will be hosting two free two day sessions of Mental Health First Aid presented by Ventura County Behavioral Health, one in English and one in Spanish. OSALV will also be scheduling a session geared specifically towards teens in the near future.

Mental Health First Aid is a ground breaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Mental Health First Aid is offered in the form of an interactive two-day course that presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments.

Attendees will learn the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury. Attendees will also learn how to use a 5-step action plan to assess a crisis situation and select and implement appropriate interventions; the realities and prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma in our communities.

Important information will be given on how to access appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources to help someone with a mental health problem.

Ventura, California - Cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death in men and women, will be the focus of a free seminar Community Memorial Health System is holding on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Alon Steinberg, M.D., will present an overview of cardiovascular disease and provide necessary knowledge to recognize this deadly disease, at the seminar that will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room at the Ventura County Community Foundation, located at 4001 Mission Oaks Blvd. in Camarillo.

In “Matters of the Heart: What Every Person Needs to Know to Maintain a Healthy Heart,” Dr. Steinberg also will cover prevention strategies to combat cardiovascular disease as well as discuss important gender differences and biases in diagnosis and treatment of it.

Dr. Steinberg received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch and completed his fellowship training in cardiology at University of Florida hospitals. He also did additional training in cardiac computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging at the Berlin Heart Institute. Dr. Steinberg is board-certified in cardiovascular disease, cardiac CT and nuclear cardiology and is Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Community Memorial Hospital. He has appeared on Cable News Network and CNN’s Headline News as an expert in his field.

Youth Safety Night is a part of Red Ribbon Week, one of the oldest and largest drug prevention programs in the nation. Red Ribbon Week was founded in 1985 after the tragic death of undercover DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico. In the wake of his death, family and friends gathered together and wore red ribbons to honor his memory and to spread the message that we must work together to put a stop to drug use in the United States.

Over the past 29 years, Red Ribbon Week has succeeded in bringing awareness to drug abuse and prevention – especially in children. But there is still more work to be done. This is why the California State Assembly joined together to pass Assembly Concurrent Resolution 175 which recognizes Red Ribbon Week and stresses the importance of engaging youth with the mission of building drug-free communities.

SANTA PAULA, CA - Santa Clara Valley Bank (SCVBank;OTC BB: SCVE) Chairman of the Board, Leslie Cornejo, today announced the Bank's 2014 third quarter results.

Board Chairman Leslie Cornejo reported that portfolio quality continues to demonstrate solid performance.Past due plus non-accrual loans achieved a record low of 0.41% of loans outstanding, with credit strength further demonstrated by just $7,638 in net loan losses, year-to-date 2014.

SCVBank continues to maintain a strong capital position with a Tier 1 Leverage Capital Ratio of 11.06%, up from 10.83% at December 31, 2013. Liquidity continues to be very strong as cash, interest bearing deposits at financial institutions and investments totaled 47% of total assets at quarter end.

SCVBank recorded anet loss of $239,000 for thethirdquarter of 2014 compared to a net loss of $25,000 for the third quarter of 2013. Expenses in the third quarter included $150,000 related to the upcoming merger with the Bank of the Sierra, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2014. The year to date net loss through September 2014 was $368,000 compared to a net loss of $116,000 for the same nine month period in 2013. The net losses are primarily attributable to declining loan balances from 2013 to 2014.

President Cheryl Knight commented that, "Challenges remain due to weak loan demand and very low interest rates; however, loans in process have recently increased and core deposits continue to be very strong.” Chairman Cornejo added that, “The bank continues to seek good quality business and commercial real estate loans in Ventura County and North Los Angeles County. It is my pleasure to serve as your city manager and take in the beauty that surrounds our great city. It is my hope to work with the Fillmore-Gazette to provide guest columns discussing the happenings at City Hall. This first column will focus on economic development and communication.
Economic Development

The council will be adopting an Economic Development Strategic Plan to assist the city in moving forward with economic development activities in Fillmore at their Tuesday, October 28 meeting. The plan is a living document that establishes direction for Fillmore’s short and long-term economic development.

The Plan identifies actions for the city to pursue as it enacts business retention, expansion, and attraction efforts, supports a fiscally healthy government, and realizes key development projects across the City. The plan includes major objectives, specific goals, and proposed implementation actions.

Part of the plan calls for city staff to meet individually with business located in the Downtown core to hear their views on what is needed to make their business grow and be successful. Meetings have taken place with a number of Downtown businesses with more to come. In addition, staff attended a Downtown merchant meeting to hear their concerns. Through these meetings the city, plans to devise different ways to help attract additional shoppers to our Downtown core.

At the direction of city council we are looking at modifying the fees associated with developing in the Fillmore Business Park. I believe if we are able to make the necessary changes developers will strongly consider new development in Fillmore. We have heard the fees at the Business Park make projects difficult to start.

Communication Plan
The City recognizes the value of citizen involvement and the wealth of good information and resources that the citizens of Fillmore possess. It is important to increase the City’s understanding of citizen concerns, ideas and values so that they can be utilized to make better decisions. Much of the City’s overall success is shaped by the quality of its communication efforts. Therefore, a proactive approach is needed to foster effective two-way communication. The City is dedicated to improving the image of Fillmore and flow of information to its constituents through an aggressive communications and outreach strategy. The goal of the communications strategy is to identify opportunities to share the City’s message and streamline the methods by which those messages are shared. A key component to the plan is to ensure that all communication; printed, televised and electronic is bi-lingual as 58% of our residents speak Spanish as a second language in their homes. The City wishes to work with our residents, businesses, visitors and school district to keep Fillmore the “Last Best Small Town”.

The Friends of the Santa Paula Blanchard Community Library invite all book lovers to their First-Saturday-of–the-Month and their Mid-Week book sales. The Fillmore Lions Club has announced that this year’s student speaker contest will be held on February 2 – a Monday at the Fillmore Scout House at the end of Sespe Ave by Pole Creek. The topic will be – Water Conservation – What can we do to conserve, recycle, and reclaim.” This topic is very interesting and appropriate in light of our present drought. Chair Bill Edmonds states that the total prize money in scholarships and cash will again be over $21,000. The Fillmore winner will receive $100 (an increase) and will advance to the next round. Runner ups will receive $25. The winner goes on to compete against the winners of the other local Lions Club in early March. All high school age youth who live within Fillmore Unified School District boundaries are eligible to compete. This includes home taught students, foreign exchange students as well as Fillmore residents who attend other high schools.

Edmonds emphasizes that this public speaking competition will be very worthwhile to the students and very interesting to their parents; and to the community. Public speaking competition will also look good on college applications and resumes. Students should get started early because it takes time to develop and practice a good speech.

The Ventura County Lodging Association (VCLA) is sponsoring a free anti-terrorism and security training session Friday, October 24 at the Four Points Sheraton in Ventura (1050 Schooner Dr.). The daylong class (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) is open to all individuals responsible for maintaining security at lodging and other private facilities in Ventura County.

Attendees will receive an overview on how to increase awareness of suspicious behaviors and links to larger threats, and how to report information to the proper law enforcement authorities. The program is intended to encourage relationships with federal, state and local law enforcement.

“The primary goal of any private facility, whether it is a hotel, motel, RV park or office building, is to provide a secure environment for its employees and guests,” says Rebekah Evans, executive director of VCLA. “This program will show how to train staff to be alert and aware of the threats that are out there.”

The program, “Infrastructure Liaison Officer Training,” will be presented by Hal Kempfer from InfraGard, a national education and information-sharing program created by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the private/public sector.

CAMARILLO, CA - Camarillo Hospice, a volunteer hospice and grief counseling center, will host an educational luncheon on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at The Wedgewood at Sterling Hills, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Titled “Hard to Swallow,” the program will feature Karen Simon, M.D., and Chaplain David Knapp discussing the perils and pitfalls of various treatments for the late stage dementia patient.

“This program is designed to broaden understanding of treatment choices for physical changes that occur as a result of dementia,” comments Dr. Simon. “Without being too technical or medical in nature, we will provide basic information designed to help the individual make sound treatment decisions for loved ones with a dementia diagnosis.”

Dr. Simon, who is a graduate of The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. She completed her Residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and a Fellowship at UCLA Medical Center. Currently she is a member of Ventura County Gastroenterology, with offices in Camarillo and Oxnard.

Chaplain Knapp is Chaplain Supervisor for the Dignity Health St. John’s Hospitals in Camarillo and Oxnard and AlmaVia of Camarillo.
