Ventura, CA. - With 410,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine expected in Ventura County, the county has seen 28% of its expected allotment; a total of 113,000 doses of the vaccine have been delivered to local health care providers to date. The number of high risk people lining up for the vaccine is beginning to slow, therefore Dr. Robert Levin, Public Health Officer, has expanded the list of eligible recipients to include health care providers and first responders. These groups are defined as health care and emergency medical services personnel who have direct patient contact.

After numerous public health flu clinics held throughout the county targeting the most at-risk groups, Dr. Levin now feels it is appropriate to expand eligible recipients to this important group. “We’re pleased with the number of people who have been getting vaccinated and that the message has gotten out to those most at-risk,” said Dr. Levin. “Health care providers and medical staff in our county have been extremely gracious to allow their patients most at risk to step to the front of the line, so to speak, and receive the vaccine first. There are counties that have not been as selfless, and I believe our health care providers are to be commended for putting the community first. We are happy to now be able to offer the vaccine to them, as they are in daily contact with those capable of spreading the virus.”

Those who have been eligible to receive the vaccine, and continue to be, are children from the ages of six months to 24-years of age; healthy household contacts of infants under 6 months of age; pregnant women, and adults from the ages of 24 to 64 years of age who have high risk medical conditions, such as lung disease, diabetes and heart disease.

People not included in the above groups have been shown to be at low risk for serious illness from the H1N1 virus. For more information on H1N1 visit the Public Health website at www.vchca.org/ph

Vision 2020 - Stimulating Community Volunteerism
Conway Spitler
Conway Spitler

Volunteers giving their time and talents to: Beautify our community, Enrich our lives and our community, Protect, preserve and promote what our citizens value and desire, Foster cooperation, communication and networking in the community, Teach and mentor our youth and other members of our community; support for our schools, and Maximize our community's resources and opportunities.

Community volunteerism brings different generations and cultures together to exchange ideas, knowledge and history and gives one a healthy outlook on life and a positive attitude. Volunteering makes one feel good about contributing to others and spreads valuable information throughout the community through positive interaction.
This leads to the creation of long-lasting networks in our community and the establishment of common goals.
Volunteerism also furthers our local resources (we can do more with what we have) and helps to keep crime rates low. It also promotes understanding of other viewpoints, cultures, ages, etc. and leads to a "sense of community"
Perhaps most importantly, widespread community volunteerism creates self-reliance within the community and the understanding that progress is not dependent on "others".

Vision 2020, Civic Pride Committee, is sponsoring the revived Fillmore Flower Show on April 10-11, 2010. It will be held at the Fillmore Senior Center, like last year, at 533 Santa Clara Street, Fillmore, California, 93015. The event is open to the public both days from 1:00pm-4:00pm and it is FREE.
The theme will be “Spring Fever” and Fillmore’s Asher Smith will once again beguile us with his violin and mandolin music.
This year, the public will be invited to share in several Flower Show preparation workshops. In January, there will be a workshop presentation by Joanne King on pruning your rose bushes, held at Oralia Herrara’s home. Having roses ready for the show depends on the time of pruning! In February, another workshop at the Herrara’s will be on entry preparations. In March, we are hoping to present a workshop focused on Youth entries. Then the first Wednesday in April (April 7th), the week of the Fillmore Flower Show, the public is invited to join the Ventura County Garden Club at their meeting in Santa Paula at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 1:00pm to hear judges, Susan Diller and Barbara Schneider speak on flower arrangements and bouquets with critiques and suggestions. The time and date specifics for these workshops and events will be presented in news articles to follow.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Clara Valley will kick off its annual “It Just Takes One” campaign this week. The campaign will raise funds for the Club’s after-school programs and services for youth, ages 5-18, living in Fillmore, Piru and Santa Paula. Scheduled to run through the end of February, 2010, the campaign seeks donations primarily from individuals.
Serving as the campaign’s co-chairs are Tony Soriano and Mike Mobley, past presidents of Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Clara Valley. The campaign’s goal this year is to raise 75,000 for the Clubs’ annual operating budget. Tony said, “We are proud to announce that to date, our campaign has raised $13,025.00 as a result of some early lead gifts. All we need now is the rest of our community to show their support, and we will be able to reach, maybe even exceed, our goal.”
“Our Clubs are making a difference in the community,” added Mobley. “Last year, our local Clubs served 5,641youth and families, a 7.5% increase from the year before. But there are still many more children in our community that need the kind of positive influence and guidance the Clubs provide, and we want to reach out to these youth and their families.”
Funds raised will help provide quality after school programs such as the Power Hour homework help program, computer skills training, career exploration, arts & crafts, fitness & sports, and character & leadership programs such as SMART Moves (a prevention program) and Youth of the Year (the Club’s premier recognition program).
The Boys & Girls Clubs mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us the most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
“The cost of providing the Boys & Girls Club experience to one child for a year is about $850” said Soriano. “You can see what a valuable investment that is when you compare it to the cost of incarcerating a youth who went in the wrong direction – usually $50,000 or more. The Clubs give a good return on investment.”
