District Attorney Gregory D. Totten announced Wednesday, January 23, 2013 that Ventura County Superior Court Judge Charles Campbell sentenced Oscar Cervantes 24, Fillmore, to 49 years to life in prison. Cervantes was convicted on October 31, 2012, following a court trial, of one count of forcible rape, one count of assault with intent to commit rape, and two counts of lewd act upon a child under the age of 14. The court further found true the special allegation that Cervantes committed these offenses against more than one victim. Over a five year period, Cervantes molested three female relatives ranging in age from 5-15 years.

The Super Bowl Sunday always comes with a high level of excitement, but one of the more anticipated parts of game day has little to do with the actual game. While most men sit glued to their sets, watching the battle for the NFL Championship, everyone watching anxiously awaits the next Super Bowl commercial. This will be especially true for one local family.

Earlier this month, Rancho Keleje Alpacas, owned by Leslie, Jeff and Jackie Warren of Fillmore, was asked to provide twenty alpaca for the filming of a commercial. Few details were provided about the nature of the commercial other than it was for Lincoln Motor Company. A search of the internet led to a surprising and unexpected answer. A YouTube video entitled “Steer the Script – Final Week of Shooting” filled in the all the blanks. It features some familiar faces....alpaca faces that is.

In the Lincoln’s first-ever Super Bowl spot, five crowd-sourced tweets – solicited by comedian Jimmy Fallon are meshed into one story line for the 60-second spot. The five tweets were selected from among 6,117 solicited by Fallon, who asked folks to send him tweets about their craziest road trips.

The upcoming commercial has created some problems on the ranch, however. According to Leslie Warren, some of their alpacas are upset they weren’t chosen to be in the commercial and the ones that went are demanding better hay and living conditions.

Santa Paula Police Department

On Friday, January 25, 2013, at approximately 2119 hours, Santa Paula Police Officers responded to the call of a Robbery at Little Caesars Pizza at 309 W. Harvard Blvd in Santa Paula. Two suspects entered the restaurant with at least one of the suspects armed with a handgun. Both suspects fled the restaurant with an undisclosed amount of money.

About 15 minutes after the call of the robbery at Little Caesar’s Pizza, at approximately 2134 hours, Santa Paula Police Officers responded to a call of a robbery at Rancho Sunset Market. The suspects matched the description of the previous suspects and at least one of them was armed with a handgun. The suspects fled the market with an undisclosed amount of money.

On Sunday, January 27, 2013, at approximately 1357 hours, two suspects entered Los Compadres Fashion at 949 E. Main Street. The two suspects grabbed an undisclosed amout of money and gold jewelry from the display cases then fled in an awaiting vehicle. At least one of the suspects was armed with a handgun. It is unknown if the robbery at Los Compadres Fashion is related to the previous two robberies.

There have been no arrests made in connection with these robberies. The investigation into the robberies is ongoing and investigators are asking anyone with information regarding these incidents to contact Detective Michael Hoppin at 525-4474 ext. 287.

After 89 years of service the Sun Rise Rotary is retiring the club banner. Sun Risers have merged with Rotary Club of Fillmore to create a more vital, stronger club. The last meeting of the Rotary Club of Fillmore Sun Risers was held January 16 at the William L. Morris Chevrolet dealership. After presentations for special merit, the presiding member of the meeting stated, “Mr. President, the time has come to ring the bell to end this last meeting of the Rotary Club of Fillmore Sun Risers and retire the club banner.”

Club Founding
Fillmore Rotary Sun Risers, founded March 28, 1985, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fillmore is now in the twilight of its life. The members recognized the reality that to conduct the activities desired in a vital strong Rotary Club, more people needed to join together. The potential advantages of merging with the Rotary Club of Fillmore could make that possible. So, here we are today at the last meeting the Rotary Club of Fillmore Sun Risers.

On Monday, January 21st, at 7:11am, the Fillmore Fire Department responded to a woman in labor at the corner of B Street and Ventura, at the Seven-Eleven convenience market. Upon arrival Fire personnel found Julie E. Bernal, of Fillmore, in her Astro minivan, about to give birth. Firefighter/Medics Toller, Rolfe and Firefighter Katz helped with the delivery of the new baby boy, Caleb Sanchez-Bernal, before AMR Ambulance arrived on scene. Caleb weighed in at 7 lbs 6 ounces, 20.5 inches. The baby’s father, Aminadab Sanchez, of Santa Paula, and Grandpa Bernal were present. Mother and “Astro Boy” are doing well. Pictured is Medic Toller, delivering the healthy baby boy. The Bernal family is grateful to the Fillmore Fire Department for their quick response and delivery-room expertise.
