CSUN offers nine different overall degree and certificate programs including Communication, Business, and Engineering. Blanca Mendieta, a seasoned educator with two decades of experience, is thrilled to return to her roots and serve the community she holds dear. Having attended Piru Elementary and Fillmore Junior High, her journey has come full circle as she steps into her new role.

Blanca’s career has spanned 20 years, with 15 years dedicated to the classroom as a math teacher and 6 years as an Assistant Principal for the Oxnard Union High School District. Her passion for education and her belief in the potential of every student have been the driving forces behind her work. She firmly believes all students can achieve great things with the right support and opportunities.

Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in various educational committees, including ELAC, LCAP, Curriculum, and Inclusivity. Additionally, she has contributed as a member of accreditation visiting committees for WASC. Her areas of expertise include Instructional Rounds, which aligns with her goal of improving instructional practices to provide all students with quality education.

Blanca is excited to work hand in hand with all students, families, staff, and the broader community to collectively shape the future of Sierra High School, Heritage Valley Independent Studies, and Adult Education. Blanca will begin on Monday, November 13, 2023.

We also thank Mrs. Amber Henrey for her two years of leadership and support for the students, staff, and school community. Amber has transferred to a teaching position in our district and will support art education at the elementary level.

On Friday, October 27, Mountain Vista Elementary School kindergarten class took a field trip to the Fillmore School Farm, located on Chambersburg Road/Route 23. Students were given pumpkins to paint, enjoyed a maze and hayride, learned how a pumpkin grows, and were able to meet cows! Photo credit Angel Esquivel-AE News.

On Tuesday, October 31st, Mountain Vista Elementary School had its annual Halloween parade. Students from Kindergarten through 5th grade dressed up in their favorite costumes and walked three laps around the field to show their costumes to friends and families!

Unity Day at Rio Vista Elementary

Celebrated throughout Fillmore Unified School District, Unity Day is an annual event recognizing National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. With one in five school-aged children report being bullied at school, Unity Day is an opportunity for individuals, schools, businesses, and communities to wear or share orange to unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion in order to prevent students from being bullied.

Fillmore High Homecoming Float Building Takeover

Last week was a busy Homecoming week for Fillmore High School as they prepared for their Annual Homecoming Parade, a longstanding Fillmore High tradition. Students meet up and take over the Fillmore USD bus garages to build their Homecoming floats to get the town pumped up for the game. Library Card Sign-Up Night a Success for Fillmore USD Students & Families
On Wednesday, October 4th, Fillmore Library held a Card Sign-Up Night, and it was a success! Preschool through high school students and their families registered for library cards and attendees enjoyed an evening of fun with coloring sheets, a Halloween cornhole toss, and were able to take tours of the new library facilities. Our FMS families had the opportunity to attend class with their students on September 8th for Back to School Night. They started with Club Academy and ended with the 6th period. They experienced our bell system and hurried to their next class during the 5-minute passing period, just like their students do on a regular school day. Once inside class, teachers presented to families the four questions that we are working on as a school community: What does the teacher want the students to know and be able to do? How does the teacher and student know if they learned it? How does the teacher respond if the student hasn’t learned it? How does the teacher respond if the student has already mastered it? We thank our FMS families for coming “back” to school to learn about this topic and we look forward to the great year that we will have!
