Most players who followed the world cup caught the soccer bug and could not wait to start displaying their skills in the new park . The Fillmore youth soccer organization has currently 54 teams registered with players ranging from 3 1/2 to 19 years old.

The new park is much more accommodating for the soccer organization as its size and layout permits us to double-up on fields for every division. This is a very welcomed feature for all the board members and volunteers as we finish our Saturday games in half the time.

Greg Aguilar, our local commissioner, has worked diligently in the last few months with his 15 board members in making sure that all aspects of the program were running smoothly. So far, he has done an outstanding job.

Pedro Rosales, one of our board member, has offered to take action pictures of the players throughout the season and will have them available for the parents to purchase later on in the season.

Fillmore Girls Softball will be holding Board Elections on Tuesday September 14th. Volunteering your time gives the youth of Fillmore the opportunity to play softball and t-ball. Many board positions are open so please join us for the 2010-2011 season. Meeting will be held at 7:30 pm in the Memorial Building.

Fernando Gonzalez of Fillmore competed in the 44th USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held in Sacramento, California from July 27th thru August 1st of 2010. Fernando and his 4X400 meter relay team finished 4th in the nation with a time of 4:23. 23.

The USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships is the most visible youth athletic development program in the world. Many of today's Olympic stars began their track and field careers competing in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. Entry for this championship was based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels of the 2010 USATF Junior Olympic Program.

Anthony Chavez and Moneh Magdaleno have been selected among this year’s Ventura County Star’s Scholar-Athletes.

Chavez, Fillmore High School, GPA 4.62; SAT 1,860; College choice UC San Diego; Athletic achievements, named as Fillmore’s Most Valuable Runner for cross country in 209. Received the Coach’s award for soccer in 2009. Won the Most Valuable Distance Runner award for track and field in 2009.

Magdaleno, Fillmore High School, GPA 4.42; SAT 1,580; College choice Vanguard; Athletic achievements, named as cross country team’s best newcomer in 2008 and most dedicated in 2009. Named as track and field team’s most valuable distance runner in 2009.

Local youth track and field athletes from the Heritage Valley Blazers count among the best in Ventura County. Thirteen athletes advanced from the County Championships in May at Moorpark High School to a Co-Conference Championship meet at Carpenteria High School on June 6, where they competed against winners from across Southern California.

Among the notable achievements at the County Championships included first place finishes by Kiana Hope in the girls (age 13-14) 3200m, Irma Torres in the girls (age 11-12) 3200m, Fernando Gonzales, a double winner in the boys (age 9-10) 400m and 800m, and Juan-Carlos Laureano in the boys (age 7-8) 1600. Hope also took second in the 1600, Laureano placed third in the 800m, and Gonzalez took fourth in the 100m. All are Fillmore athletes.

Other top performers were Nicki Mayes, who placed second in both the girls 80m hurdles and the 400m, and third in the high jump; John Shaneyfelt, who placed second in the boys (age 13-14) 100m hurdles, and Paloma Mora, who took third in the girls (age 9-10) shot put.

All of these athletes qualified to participate in the Conference Championships in Carpenteria, and seven of them placed well-enough to advance to the next level of regional championships for the U.S. Track and Field Championships in July: Paloma Mora (shot put); Nicki Mayes (80m hurdles and 400m), Sarah Schilbrack (1500m), Nayeli Baez (3000m), Kiana Hope (3000m), Juan-Carlos Laurea (800m, 1500m), Fernando Gonzalez (400m, 800m).

Julian Morral, president of the Blazers, said he was thrilled with the success of these athletes this season. “Our track club keeps getting better and better. We have 108 kids on our team and a great group of volunteer parents and coaches. We expect even more top performances next year, too.”

California State University Channel Islands

Camarillo, Calif. June 7, 2010 – CSU Channel Islands (CI) has announced the first step in the creation of an ambitious athletic program for both men and women. Carl Reed, CI’s Director of Athletics, announced that intercollegiate women’s soccer would be the first sport in an ongoing athletic roll out.

Reed began planning for the team in May of 2009. Since the school is based on the principle of shared governance, input was sought from faculty, staff and students on the development of the athletic program. Reed stated, “Having women’s soccer as our first sport made sense for CI. Looking at the soccer landscape here in Ventura County, from high schools, AYSO, soccer clubs and the programs at the community colleges, it was clear there was talent and interest in the sport.”

In fall 2010, CI will begin to interview Head Women’s Soccer Coach candidates so there will be a Head Coach in place by January 2011. Coaches will begin building their programs throughout the winter. Prospective players will be recruited from existing CI students, community colleges and high school seniors who will be attending CI in fall 2011.

Fall 2011 will see intensive team training and skill building, coupled with limited scheduled competitions. Carl Reed said the team, as the first entry of the athletic program, will have everything it needs to compete and be successful, create interest and build student and community support for the University’s athletic efforts. Reed mentioned that men’s golf is seriously being considered as the University’s second team sport in the future if sufficient private funding has been raised to support the program.

The women’s soccer team will be officially launched with a full-time Division II playing season in fall 2012.
