Fillmore makes it 2 in a row
The Flashes avoided disaster last Friday night as they beat Grace Brethren 42-30 in what turned out to be an exciting game. Grace Brethren received the ball first, and they went right to work. They converted on a 4th and 1 down to the Flashes 30 yard line. They scored the first touchdown of the game with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Down 7-0 the Flashes went right to work. Fillmore scored on a touchdown run by Andrey Sanchez to tie the score at 7. The lancers got the ball back and converted on their second 4th down of the night down to the 45 yard line. The Lancers kicked a field goal, and extended their lead to 10-7. Quarterback Carson Mclain threw an interception on Fillmore’s next possession, and the Lancers took it in 50 yards for the touchdown to take a 17-7 lead with 8:25 left before halftime. Fillmore took over and scored on a touchdown run by Chino with 3 minutes left before halftime. Grace Brethren got into their 2 minute offense and scored with 3.5 seconds left before halftime. Fillmore went into the locker room down 24-14 at half. Fillmore received the ball first. However, they were forced to punt it away. The Lancers took over at the Flashes 36 yard line. The Lancers were held on third down and they looked like they were going to punt it away. However Grace Brethren faked the punt and got the first down. The Lancers scored another touchdown to go ahead 30-14. Fillmore got the ball back but they were forced to punt it away. The Lancers were driving to score again as they appeared to have the game under control. However, the Flashes had other ideas. Fillmore intercepted a Lancer pass and took it all the way down to the 1 yard line. Quarterback Carson Mclain snuck the ball in for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 30-21. Fillmore went into the 4th quarter down by 9 and in need of a stop. They got what they wanted as Grace Brethren fumbled the ball at the 39 yard line and Fillmore recovered. Carson Mclain scored another touchdown to cut the deficit down to 2 points with 8:19 left in the game. The crowd was electric in hopes that Fillmore could pull out a win. On the Lancers next possession they were forced to punt it away. Fillmore got the ball on the 30 yard line in need of a score. Fillmore running back Chino burst up the middle for a 30 yard gain down to the Lancers 40 yard line with 3 minutes left. Chino struck again, this time on a 40 yard touchdown run that would give Fillmore the lead for good. Fillmore went for 2 and got it. Grace Brethren took over down 36-30 with 2:30 left in the game and in need of a touchdown to win. They went for it on 4th down again, but this time Fillmore stopped them. Fillmore then scored a touchdown for insurance to win the game 42-30. Great game to both teams. Good luck to the Lancers on the rest of their season as they play next Friday at Santa Clara (Oxnard). Fillmore plays away at Malibu next week in need of a win to keep their hopes of a league championship alive. GOOD LUCK FLASHES! |

Last Friday night Fillmore traveled to Moorpark College to take on the Grace Brethren Lancers. After suffering their first loss of the season against Santa Paula Fillmore looked to get back on track with a win. It was another low scoring affair with no one scoring in the first quarter. Grace Brethren got the ball first. However they fumbled the ball away with 5:19 left in the first quarter. Fillmore took the ball and proceeded to take the lead thanks to a touchdown by Justin Coert with 10:52 left in the second quarter. The Lancers got the ball back. They were doing whatever they could to get in to the end zone. The Fillmore defense came through once again and intercepted the Lancers pass with 6:01 left in the second quarter. Fillmore couldn't score and they lead at halftime 6-0. The Flashes got the ball and scored again a touchdown run by Carson Mclain. The Lancers tried to stage a comeback after Fillmore fumbled he ball away with 7:59 left in the game. They turned that into a touchdown with 5:49 left. Fillmore lead 13-6 after Grace Brethren failed on a 2 point conversion. The Lancers then stopped Fillmore on their next possession and got the ball back. Flashes vs Cardinals
The Flashes played rival Santa Paula last Friday and came back with a loss. It wasn’t quite the game most expected it to be. Santa Paula won 14-7. With that being said both defenses played great. Santa Paula scored the games first touchdown in the first quarter to go up 7-0. The Flashes defense held strong only allowing only 1 first half touchdown. However the Flashes offence couldn’t get started as quarterback Carson McLain threw 1 interception in the first half. Santa Paula scored again in the 3rd quarter to go up 14-0. Carson McLain scored Fillmore’s only touchdown of the game on a quarterback sneak with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Fillmore appeared that they were going to force overtime though as they had the ball on the 20 with less than 1 minute left in the game. However, on 3rd down Carson McLain was sacked for a loss and on the next play McLain’s pass was batted down. The Flashes lost 14-7. Hats off to the Cardinals. Great job on the win. Notable players for Santa Paula were Daniel Kohr and Noel Magana. Notable players for the Flashes were Andrey Sanchez and Daniel Flores. Good luck to Santa Paula on the rest of their season as they play Albert Einstein Academy (Santa Clarita). The Flashes travel to Santa Clara (Oxnard). JV plays on Thursday and Varsity Plays on Friday. Better luck next year Flashes. |
