Enlarge Photo On Saturday the team raced at the 2013 Cross Country CIF Prelims held at Mt. San Antonio College. To advance to the CIF Finals both teams had to place in the top 16 out of the 32 teams at the prelims. Both boys and girls advanced and will compete this Saturday November 23rd. The girls’ team has qualified to the CIF finals for two consecutive years, where the boys have qualified to CIF finals for the past four consecutive years. On Saturday the team put forth some amazing performances. Both teams are at their peak performance where times make the difference in advancing on to the next race. We are proud of the efforts and the daily workouts that all our runners are putting in to prepare for their final weeks of cross country running. The boys’ team finished seventh in their perspective heat. Jorge Hurtado had the top performance for the flashes placing 24th in his heat with a very impressive 16:38. Dominick Gonzalez and Francisco Erazo finished 27th and 34th with times of 16:46 and 17:02, while Mario Gaspar was 5th at 17:11. Justin Beach and Nicolas Frias placed 48th and 52nd at 17:19 and 17:26. The girls’ team finished fifth in their perspective heat. Kiana Hope had the top performance for the lady flashes placing 5th in her heat with a time of 18:50. Jordyn Vassaur finished 17th with a time of 19:59. Lupita Perez placed 24th in the race, clocking a 20:38. Alexis Tafoya was close behind at 27th with a time of 20:43 followed by teammate Briana Segoviano finishing 33rd in 20:57. Sofia Gallardo, and Marisol Martinez were the finished the round up for the lady flashes with times of 22:21 and 22:26. Flashes stay on top with 48-14 over Santa Clara
When Santa Clara and Fillmore took the field on Friday everyone knew what was at steak. It was just a question of who would come out on top. Could Fillmore force a tie and become Co- champions? Or would Santa Clara be at the top all alone? This game would answer both those questions. Santa Clara received the ball first to begin the game. On Santa Clara's first offensive play the ball was intercepted by the Flashes. Fillmore took the ball inside their 20 yard line where Hayden Wright scored the games first touchdown from 16 yards out with 8:40 left in the first quarter. Fillmore forced Santa Clara's offense off the field with a 3 and out on Santa Clara's next possession. Fillmore took over possession of the ball and scored their second touchdown of the night with 2:19 left in the 1st quarter. The Saints, down 14-0 looked to get something going as they returned the kickoff down to the 44 yard line. Santa Clara took the ball down to the 10 yard line where the quarterback threw a 10 yard strike into the endzone with 11:52 left in the 2nd quarter. On the Saints next possession, down 14-7 they looked to tie the game up, but were stopped by the Flashes on 4th and 3 from the 13 yard line. On Fillmores next play they handed the ball off to Tyler Esquivel who burst up the middle for a 75 yrd gain. Fillmore got the ball down to the 10 yard line where they handed the ball off to Chino for a 10 yard touchdown to give Fillmore a 21-7 lead with 6:04 left before halftime. Santa Clara appeared to have scored a touchdown, but a penalty negated the touchdown. Santa Clara missed a field goal and went into the locker room down 21-7 at the half. Fillmore returned the kickoff 70 yards. Later on the drive Tyler Esquivel scored a touchdown, however the PAT was blocked. Fillmore lead 27-7. On the Saints next possession they scored a 1 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 27-14 with 3:41 left in the 3rd quarter. The Saints held Fillmore and forced a 4th and 1. Fillmore handed the ball off to Justin Coert and they got a first down. Fillmore extended their lead to 34-14 thanks to a touchdown run by Hayden Wright with 3:28 left in the 3rd quarter. Santa Clara could not get anything going as they were forced to punt on their next possession with 1:52 left in the 3rd quarter. The Saints got the ball back thanks to a fumble by the Flashes. Fillmore was up 34-14 with only 1 quarter left to play. Santa Clara attempted a Field goal and missed it, and the Flashes returned it all the way to the 42 yard line. Santa Clara held Fillmore on 3 plays and forced a punt. On the next play Santa Clara fumbled it back to Fillmore. The Flashes then handed the ball off to Justin Coert as he took it down to the 5 yard line setting up a touchdown run by Carson Mclain to give the Flashes a 41-14 lead with 7:45 left in the game. Santa Clara tried to get another score in, but they fumbled it back to the Flashes. With 4:46 left to play Carson Mclain handed the ball off to Hayden Wright as he ran it 50 yards for a Fillmore Flashes touchdown. Fillmore went on to beat Santa Clara by a score of 48-14 forcing both teams to be co-champions. Santa Clara won the coin flip to take possession of the #1 seed. Good luck to the Saints as they play Banning high school (Banning, Ca) next week at Santa Clara. Fillmore takes the #2 seed in the playoffs as they gear up to take on Citrus Valley (Redlands) next Friday at 7pm. GOOD LUCK, AND GO FLASHES! |

Last Friday Fillmore traveled to Malibu to take on the Sharks. Malibu received the ball first. However, they were un able to do anything with it as they punted the ball away to the Flashes. Fillmore took the ball all the way down field and punched it in for a touchdown to give them an early 7-0 lead. Malibu got the ball again and were forced to punt. The Flashes looked to take a commanding 2 touchdown lead. And they did just that as they ran the ball all the way down field for another score. Down 14-0 Malibu fought hard to try and get themselves back in the game. Once again the Flashes forced a 3 and out. Fillmore marched the ball straight down the field and punched it in to expand their first quarter lead to 20-0. At this point you got the feeling that this game was a typical Fillmore game where Fillmore would get the lead early and stifle the opponent with a physical defense. The second quarter started with Malibu desperately trying to get back in the game. However, the Flashes wouldn’t let that happen as they forced the Sharks to punt. Fillmore scored another touchdown before the half to take a 27-0 lead. Malibu did whatever they could to try to soften the Flashes defense to no avail. Fillmore held their ground once again, and once again Fillmore pounded the ball all the way down field to take a 34-0 lead in to the final quarter of play. The Malibu defense was finally able to stop the Flashes. Malibu`s offense couldn’t get anything going as they gave up a safety in the final minutes of play. Fillmore went on to beat the Sharks 36-0. Good luck to the Sharks as they look to get their first win of the year on the final game of the season against Grace Brethren. Fillmore has a big game next Friday as they play the Santa Clara Saints at home. If the Flashes win they win a share of the league title. If they lose then they will come in second place in league. Fillmore makes it 2 in a row
The Flashes avoided disaster last Friday night as they beat Grace Brethren 42-30 in what turned out to be an exciting game. Grace Brethren received the ball first, and they went right to work. They converted on a 4th and 1 down to the Flashes 30 yard line. They scored the first touchdown of the game with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Down 7-0 the Flashes went right to work. Fillmore scored on a touchdown run by Andrey Sanchez to tie the score at 7. The lancers got the ball back and converted on their second 4th down of the night down to the 45 yard line. The Lancers kicked a field goal, and extended their lead to 10-7. Quarterback Carson Mclain threw an interception on Fillmore’s next possession, and the Lancers took it in 50 yards for the touchdown to take a 17-7 lead with 8:25 left before halftime. Fillmore took over and scored on a touchdown run by Chino with 3 minutes left before halftime. Grace Brethren got into their 2 minute offense and scored with 3.5 seconds left before halftime. Fillmore went into the locker room down 24-14 at half. Fillmore received the ball first. However, they were forced to punt it away. The Lancers took over at the Flashes 36 yard line. The Lancers were held on third down and they looked like they were going to punt it away. However Grace Brethren faked the punt and got the first down. The Lancers scored another touchdown to go ahead 30-14. Fillmore got the ball back but they were forced to punt it away. The Lancers were driving to score again as they appeared to have the game under control. However, the Flashes had other ideas. Fillmore intercepted a Lancer pass and took it all the way down to the 1 yard line. Quarterback Carson Mclain snuck the ball in for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 30-21. Fillmore went into the 4th quarter down by 9 and in need of a stop. They got what they wanted as Grace Brethren fumbled the ball at the 39 yard line and Fillmore recovered. Carson Mclain scored another touchdown to cut the deficit down to 2 points with 8:19 left in the game. The crowd was electric in hopes that Fillmore could pull out a win. On the Lancers next possession they were forced to punt it away. Fillmore got the ball on the 30 yard line in need of a score. Fillmore running back Chino burst up the middle for a 30 yard gain down to the Lancers 40 yard line with 3 minutes left. Chino struck again, this time on a 40 yard touchdown run that would give Fillmore the lead for good. Fillmore went for 2 and got it. Grace Brethren took over down 36-30 with 2:30 left in the game and in need of a touchdown to win. They went for it on 4th down again, but this time Fillmore stopped them. Fillmore then scored a touchdown for insurance to win the game 42-30. Great game to both teams. Good luck to the Lancers on the rest of their season as they play next Friday at Santa Clara (Oxnard). Fillmore plays away at Malibu next week in need of a win to keep their hopes of a league championship alive. GOOD LUCK FLASHES! |

 Fillmore Varsity Girl Jordyn Vassaur preparing for poop out hill at the Mt. Sac Invitational this past Saturday. Jordyn was the third Fillmore athlete for the Lady Flashes to Kiana Hope and Lupita Perez. She has been an integral part of her team's success. Her willingness to work hard in practice and in the meets has helped in pushing her team forward in the right direction. Keep up the good work Jordyn, your coaches and teammates are proud of you. BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul sophomore Corey Cole has been named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the league headquarters on Monday morning. Cole tied an NCAA Division II record with a 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown in the first quarter of Concordia's 28-24 road win at Wayne State on Saturday. Cole's kickoff return score was also a big momentum play, as the Wildcats had previously tied the score at 7-7 before he housed the ensuing return. In the game, Cole had two returns for 123 yards (61.5 avg), and added one catch for a yard. He leads the NSIC and is third in the nation with a 34.5 kickoff return average on 11 returns (379 yards). He leads the team with 10 plays of 25-plus yards, with nine of those coming on kick returns. Corey is a Fillmore High School Graduate, Class of 2011. |

 Senior Kiana Hope led the Lady Flashes at Oak Canyon Park in their second league meet of the season. Enlarge Photo On a non-race day at 7am in the morning you can find the girls and boys of the Fillmore High School Cross Country team awake and training for their upcoming meet. The time and dedication that these young student athletes put forth each and every day, both in the classroom and in their running is truly inspiring. They train in the hot weather, in the cold weather and if it is raining, in the wet weather. After a very successful season, the 2012 Division Boys Cross Country State Champs of Fillmore are now off to their collegiate careers. Behind they have helped create and mold a culture of runners that have filled their places for the 2013 Cross Country season. Senior runners, Justin Beach, Nicolas Frias and Frank Chavez return from the 2012 State Champion team. In addition, seniors, Omar Ponce, Mario Gaspar and newcomer Jesus Mendoza join the varsity team of which have been an integral part of scorers in the meets. A very impressive group of juniors has stepped up and join the varsity team. Leading the junior class, Jorge Hurtado has been a key runner, stepping up as the number one runner for the boys’ team this year. Returning juniors Francisco Erazo and Gerardo Rodriguez along with first time runner Dominick Gonzalez have added strength to the varsity team. Currently the Varsity Boys’ Cross Country team is ranked 12th in the CIF Southern Section rankings. Ending the season last year with a goal successfully accomplished, to make it to the CIF Finals, the girls’ cross country team has emerged into the 2013 season with a strong group of female runners. Leading the varsity girls’ team this year is senior Kiana Hope. Kiana has been the top runner for the lady flashes since her freshman year. She finished in 4th place at the last league meet at Oak Canyon Park. In addition, senior Jordyn Vassaur returns to the girls’ varsity team as a third year runner and a key score. Jordyn continues to improve each and every race. The junior class includes Sofia Gallardo, a first time varsity runner and three-year varsity runner Alexis Tafoya. The sophomore class brings strength and promise to a strong team for the future. Leading the sophomore class, Maria “Lupita” Perez was a nice addition and surprise from the track season. Sophomore teammates, Briana Segoviano and Irma Torres, both return to the girls’ varsity team. Rounding out the varsity team is newbie, Marisol Martinez, a standout freshman. Currently the girls’ team is ranked 13th in the CIF Southern Section Cross Country rankings. The team travels to Mt. San Antonio College this Friday to compete in the world’s largest cross country meet. This is one of the runner’s favorite meets and we are looking forward to the competition and to racing well. |

Flashes vs Malibu
Fillmore bounced back after losing to Santa Clara with a big win over Malibu this past Friday night. The Flashes scored their first of many touchdowns in the first quarter. Malibu dropped back for a pass and Fillmore scored on the pick 6. Down 7-0 Malibu got the ball back and were forced to punt it back to Fillmore. However on the very next play the Flashes fumbled it and Malibu recovered. The Sharks couldn’t do anything with the ball and punted it back to the Flashes. Fillmore went up 14-0 after a 66 yard touchdown run by Justin Coert. On Fillmores next possession Coert ran the ball 50 yards, all the way down to the Flashes 35 yard line. A few plays later the Flashes punched it in to extend the lead to 21-0. Malibu tried to get on the scoreboard but ended up punting the ball away to the Flashes. Fillmore scored on another touchdown by Chino to go up 28-0 with 8:23 left in the second quarter. On Malibu’s next possession they threatened to score but were again forced to punt it away. Fillmore took over on the 8 yard line. Fillmore scored on a 78 yard burst by Hayden Wright to extend the lead to 35-0. Malibu tried to get something together before halftime. However Nick Liu picked off the Malibu quarterback and scored Fillmore’s last touchdown of the half. By halftime the game was practically over. Malibu did score their first and only points of the game on a touchdown pass in the 3rd quarter. Fillmore scored again on Chino’s 3rd touchdown with 1:30 left in the game. Fillmore dominated both sided of the ball as they demolished Malibu 56-7. Malibu falls to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in league. Good luck to the Sharks on the rest of their season. They play at Santa Clara High School (Oxnard) next Friday. They play Fillmore again at Malibu High School in two weeks. |
