SACRAMENTO – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell today announced that the State Allocation Board (SAB) awarded more than $153 million to 62 local educational agencies throughout the state for the construction, modernization, and emergency repair of schools. The list of awardees is attached.
“I want to thank voters who have generously supported bond measures and the state that has designated funds specifically to improve our aging and crumbling school facilities,” said O’Connell. “Maintenance of our schools requires constant attention to assure our students learn in an environment that is modern, safe, and secure.”
O'Connell is a member of the SAB that today voted to approve more than $148 million to 48 school districts and a county office of education for the construction and modernization of schools. Also, more than $5 million was awarded to 14 school districts for emergency repairs. The SAB also approved a final apportionment for one project that received approval from the Proposition 47 Charter School Facilities Program for Animo Leadership Charter High (Centinela Valley Union High).
The SAB is responsible for determining the allocation of state resources, such as proceeds from general obligation bond issues and other designated state funds used for the new construction and modernization of local public school facilities. The SAB is also charged with the responsibility for the administration of the School Facility Program, Charter School Facilities Program, Overcrowded Relief Grant Program, Critically Overcrowded School Facilities Program, School Facility Joint-Use Program, Career Technical Education Facilities Program, Emergency Repair Program, and Deferred Maintenance Program.

We have had a great homecoming week so far at Fillmore High School, and we’re only halfway through! Activities have been planned for every day of the week, and although some changes have been made due to our new track and field, it looks like this Homecoming will set the bar high for future years.
The theme of this year’s Homecoming is “Its Always Fun and Games in Flashland”. The floats will all include some sort of board game, and they are looking great so far. The students have been working very hard, and the freshmen class has persevered despite being without a truck for the first night of float-building. Chaperones are always welcome at the bus-garage, so if you have a student at FHS and are available anytime between 3 and 9pm, we would love to have you.
The Homecoming Court for this year was announced Monday night at the kick-off party for float building. The freshman princess is Anissa Magdeleno and the freshman Prince is Robert Bonilla. Angelica Gonzalez and Angel Barajas are the Sophomore Princess and Prince, and the Junior Prince and Princess are Anthony Chavez and Victoria Ayala. Jill Wilber and Nathan Ibarra, Colin Cone and Rebecca Herrera, and Brina Suttle and Ralph Sandoval are all on the Senior Court, but the winners of King and Queen will not be announced until the rally on Friday.
The annual homecoming parade will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, and this will be one of the few times that the public will be able to see the floats up close, as they are no longer able to drive on the track at the football game. The floats will still be at the football game, but they will be on display only.
Be sure to come to the game on Friday, especially if you are alumni! Football games are a great way to support our schools, and all of the proceeds from getting into the football game go back to the Athletics program. The Lions Club will be making their amazing tri-tip sandwiches, and the Junior Class will be working the snack bar to raise money for prom. This will be our last home game for quite some time, so don’t miss out!

San Cayetano Principal, Jan Marholin shows school librarian Michelle Anderson the signature artifacts that will have a permanent home in the San Cayetano library. The AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) 2008 Crocs Tour made a weekend stop September 6th and 7th in Santa Barbara for the Santa Barbara Open. The volleyball players on tour included the gold medal winners from Bejing. During Sunday afternoon, Marholin was able to have the Olympic Gold Medal Beach Volleyball Team of Kerri Walsh and Misty May Treanor sign both a volleyball and the front page of a Los Angeles Times Newspaper showing them celebrating their final Olympic win. The volleyball will be encased and the newspaper will be framed. What an inspiration for our students! Marholin hopes to keep adding to this collection of artifacts that will inspire our students.

The first week at Fillmore High School flew by – the students here have been experiencing a number of positive new changes. We have a new principle, Mr. Wilber, as well as a new assistant principle, Mrs. Green. All of the dirt construction zones from last year have a fresh carpet of green grass, the lunch tables have been freshly painted (thanks to the class of 2009), and the new football stadium held its first football game last Friday. All of these improvements gave the school a clean start this year.

The high school also has enrolled several foreign exchange students. All of them will graduate with the class of 2009, but some of them will continue their schooling once they return home next summer. The four students are from all over the world – Germany, China, Switzerland, and the Philippines. As we have in the past, the students of FHS hope to give them a wonderful American experience.

All of our fall sports have started up – both football teams won their first games against Channel Islands, and they will have another home game this Friday against Village Christian. The girls’ volleyball team will have their first match against Frazier Mountain this Thursday. Be sure to support our fall sports – they appreciate it.

For more information, call the student store at 524-8491.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE INDEX (API) – [Chart 1]
The Academic Performance Index (API) is the cornerstone of California’s Public Schools Accountability Act of 1999. The API is a numeric index that measures the academic performance and growth of schools. The API is an important part of the federal measure of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) because it shows academic growth over time. Since 2000, the median API for Ventura County has shown a steady increase, rising 61 points to 785. At the present time, 76% of all schools have an API above 700, 43% have an API above the State target of 800, including 19 schools that have a 900 API or higher. CONTINUED »
