Step back to a simpler time by attending the 2008 Fillmore May Festival that runs May 15-18. A celebration of the community since 1917, the festival has it all - train rides, carnival attractions, great food and family fun.
Harrison Industries and Santa Clara Valley Disposal have long been sponsors of this wonderful small-town event in Downtown Fillmore which gets better each year.
This year’s festival boasts more carnival rides, more food and craft vendors, better access
to Downtown merchants as well as live entertainment, a karaoke contest, talent show and baby contest. Also, Thursday, May 15, is Family Night, with kids 16 and under getting into the carnival for free.

The Fillmore Sun Risers Rotary Club is featuring a series of keynote speakers during the year addressing issues and information relative to the community and the region. Saturday the Santa Clara Valley Hospice had their house tours in Santa Paula. My wife and I as volunteers sat at 1320 Fair Oaks Avenue! There is an exclamation mark because our sitting was a astonishing experience.

Carlos and Heidi Juarez are the owners where we kept watch over the visitors in one of the cleanest garages I have ever seen. Carlos, who is with the Santa Paula Fire Department, had an exhibit in this garage of lunch boxes. He has been collecting these lunch boxes for over fifteen years.

As the visitors looked at these well-displayed lunch boxes you could almost guess their ages by the one that was their lunch box when going to school. There was the Bee Gees lunch box, along with many favorite characters of the years of our century.

The boxes were displayed on the wall of the garage in well arranged order.

Also displayed was a picture of the Santa Paula Police Department from 1940 to 1980. Also there was a replica of the Santa Paula railroad station with its original paint.

And to top it off, you were treated to a glass of home brewed wine if you wished.

These house tours are done each year by the Santa Clara Valley Hospice group. The Santa Clara Valley Hospice service are available to residents in Santa Paula, Fillmore, Piru and Saticoy. These tours, each year, help maintain the services of the organization.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Robert Munns, Fillmore artist, had drawings accepted in two juried competitions last month. His drawing, "Missed Metamorphosis" was accepted in the 22nd International Juried Show of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey which ran February 8 to March 21. There were over 2300 entries for this show with 140 pieces being accepted. The juror was Carter Foster, Curator of Drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City.
Robert's drawing "Homage to Hiroshima" was accepted for the 2008 20X20X20 National Compact Competition and Exhibit at Louisiana State University Student Union Art Gallery which ran from March 16 and running to April 6. The juror, Heather Pesanti is Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA.

Young women of Destiny is a program for young women from Middle School to High School age. The program promotes a sense of self worth, as young girls begin to make life plans now, instead of waiting until they graduate. By creating a solid life plan, as the girls grow and mature they will be prepared for the tough choices they will make in their personal and academic lives.
The Young Women of Destiny have teamed up with Digital Edge Photography to provide our community with an opportunity to honor our Mothers. As Mother’s Day approaches, what a wonderful way to tell your mom how much she is loved.

The Sunrisers Rotary of Fillmore will feature American Red Cross of Ventura Chief Executive Officer Chris Johnson at their May 6, 2008 breakfast meeting at El Pescador Restaurant. Mr. Johnson will be discussing the Disaster Action Plan for Ventura County communities including Fillmore and its surrounding communities.
The Red Cross has launched a campaign to raise funds for the expansion of Disaster Action Teams (DAT) throughout the county. DAT members will be made up of local community volunteers who will arrive on the scene of a disaster to work closely with emergency personnel. They will be capable of mobilizing quickly, open up an emergency shelter, and provide immediate assistance to those in need. The goal is to ensure every community has a strong DAT trained team of volunteers as well as providing material supplies needed in times of disaster.

The annual Miss Greater Ventura County USA Pageant is now accepting applications. This year the pageant is geared toward giving young women a choice to compete at a state pageant or receive a cash scholarship.
The theme of the pageant is Character Counts teaching young women self-respect and ambition towards their future. This is a preliminary pageant, which can lead to other state pageants or a cash scholarship of $500.00, and is open to Teen applicants ranging from ages 13 to 17 and Miss applicants 17-25. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen never married or pregnant must be a resident of California for the past 6 months.
Applicants attending college out of state may enter if their primary residence is in California. The practices for the pageant will begin on May 1, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at Brekke Elementary School, 1400 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Oxnard, CA. The participants will be taught communication skills, the importance of character, walking techniques and stage presence.
The pageant will be on June 29, 2008 and held at the Pacifica Performing Arts Center, 600 West Gonzales, Oxnard, CA. Tickets will be available at the door for $15 the night of the competition. This pageant encourages young women that would like to make a positive impact in their community, and to be motivated to achieve their educational and career goals.

This year’s celebration will mark the 22nd annual Seabee Days where the community is invited aboard for a first-hand look at the Navy’s construction engineers. Seabee Days will feature a full dress military parade, Seabee displays and demonstrations, musical entertainment, hands-on children’s exhibits, carnival, craft show, motorcycle and car show, sports contests and a wide variety of food. Funds raised from this event will help offset the many supplies, medical expenses, and obedience training for the animals and their care. Over 5,000 dogs and puppies have come through our program and have been given a second chance.

Grad Nite Live was started seventeen years ago so our kids would be safe at graduation. It has been a success because no graduate has lost their lives since this program was implemented. We need the community’s help to complete our fundraising effort. Thank you for your support.

Mr. Joseph Kern was presented a Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club of Fillmore-noontime. He has been an active member for over forty years. His wife, Lynda, and three of his children Hannah Tulderg, Peter Kern, Mary Orellana and his son-in-law Robert Orellana were present for the celebration. He received the three emblems of the Paul Harris Award the pin, the medallion and the certificate. Paul Harris founded Rotary in Chicago in 1905 and was the first award winner. Ventura Concert Band
Have you heard about the Ventura County Concert Band? If you haven't been to one of their free performances, you have missed a great prize without any admission fee to you. These concerts are free and are well attended by the public.
The free concerts of the world's great band music are on Sunday afternoons in the Ventura High School auditorium. There are four concerts each year. You are able to get on the mailing list to be notified of the concerts if you so wish by giving your information at the hospitality table in the lobby.
The members of the group meet under the auspices of the Ventura Unified School District each week preparing for their performances to the public.
The last concert of this season is June 8. If you like music, it is a concert to visit.

Kassandra Monike Sandoval - Interest: Biology University of California at Santa Barbara
Kassandra says: The last four years high school has been an incredible experience for her, through good and hard times. I have learned so much through this time of my life.
Throughout high school she was always on the go and very busy with everything she was doing. All four years at high school she was very dedicated to cheerleading. Her first two years of high school she was a cheerleader for the Toxic All-Stars squad. This was a competitive cheerleading squad and always traveling.
From her sophomore year into her senior year she was a cheerleader for Fillmore High School pep squad. Cheerleading has been a big part of her life. Was involved in it for seven years.
In her spare time some of her hobbies are shopping, hanging out with her friends and family and spending time at the beach. She believes it is important to find some time for yourself, especially when you live a hectic life.
High school has been an amazing journey for her. She honestly is blessed to have had such a wonderful four years in high school. She is proud that she has done so much in her academics. That is maintaining at least a 3.8 or above GPA during her high school years.
Many honors AP and college classes since her Freshmen year. These were a challenge but she has always liked to challenge herself. She believes that commitment and dedication will get the work done and take her a long way in life.
Kassandra has always been involved in many clubs. Being involved in the Pep Squad, Golf team, ASB, Interact, UC Ambassadors Club, MECHA Club and MESA has kept her extremely busy but has been worth it.
One of her many outstanding qualities is responsibility. The experience of having a job has made a great input in her life and has helped her become the person she is today. Holding a job throughout my last two years of high school made her become a stronger and more responsible person.
She took it upon herself to start working to help her family out financially.
Throughout high school she has always been on the go and very busy with everything she was doing. Orange Festival. Pennies for Patient, Convalescent Center, Raider's Camp, Relay for Life, Clean up, School binders. City of Fillmore, Beach Clean up, Fillmore High School, and Blood Drive.
For the Community: Fillmore Fire Department, Toxic All Stars, Sunrise Rotary, Relay for DSLife, Women's Club, San Cayetano School, Camp RYLA, Fillmore High School, Associated Student Body, and Associated Student Body. School Activities: ASB, Interact Club, Renaissance, MECHA, Junior Class, Mesa, US. C. Ambassador, College Night, Golf, Pep Squad, Cheerleading, and Student of the Year.

In response to overwhelming community support, the Fillmore Library, located at 502 Second Street in Fillmore, is adding hours to its schedule. Effective April 14, 2008, the new hours of service are as follows: Monday and Tuesday 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm; Wednesday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm; Closed on Sunday.
The Fillmore Library is part of the Ventura County Library system, a system of fourteen libraries throughout the county of Ventura. The library offers storytimes and speakers, wi-fi internet access, downloadable audio books, business resources, and more. County Supervisor Kathy Long, 3rd District would like to announce to all residents of Ventura County that the next Santa Paula Tattoo Removal Clinic will be held on Saturday April 19th, 2008 from 8:30 am – 12 noon, no appointments necessary. Orientation for first time participants will be at 9 am located at 1334 E. Main St. the Santa Paula Family Care Clinic. Due to overwhelming response, spaces will be limited.
County Supervisor Kathy Long spearheaded this clinic in collaboration with the following agencies: Ventura County Public Health, Ventura County Probation Agency, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Santa Paula Family Care Clinic, Interface Children Family Services, and CalWORKS.
