VENTURA COUNTY, CA - Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) is bracing for what is sure to be one of their busiest weekends of the year. Each year, during the days surrounding 4th of July, hundreds of pets become frightened by fireworks and run away from their homes and yards. These pets, lost and confused, often end up at VCAS’ animal adoption centers in Camarillo and Simi Valley.

“The sights, sounds and smells of fireworks can be terrifying for some pets,” said Tara Diller, VCAS Director. “By following some very simple safety tips, people can keep their animals safe and secure while they enjoy 4th of July festivities.”

Pet Safety Tips:
1. Do not take your pet to fireworks displays.

2. Do not leave your pet alone in the car - Pets can suffer serious health effects, even death, in a few short minutes when left in a hot car. Unfortunately, partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they can provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.

3. Make sure your pets are properly licensed and wearing identification tags, so that if they become lost, they can be returned promptly. Make sure that tags have current phone numbers and VCAS has current owner contact information on file.

4. Get your pet microchipped or, if it already is, make sure the microchip company has your current contact information.

5. Animals found running at-large should be taken to a VCAS animal adoption center, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

6. Keep your pets in a comfortable and quiet area during Fourth of July festivities. If your pet is crate trained, then their crate is a great choice.

7. Be sure that you remove any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company if you won't be home.

8. If your pet seeks comfort in a bath tub, under a bed or other small space, let them. Do not try to lure them out. If the space is safe and it makes them feel more secure, leave them there.

9. Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.

10. If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder or fireworks, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.

The Fourth of July is a favorite holiday for many Americans. Families and friends gather to celebrate our country with food, parades, parties, and fireworks. For many people, the celebration includes alcohol, but the holiday quickly goes from festive to fatal when people choose to drive after drinking. Over the July 4th holiday period in 2012 alone, 78 people were killed in alcohol impaired-driving crashes on our nation’s roads.

To crack down on drunk driving this Fourth of July, The Avoid the 14 DUI Task Force will be out in full force, aggressively targeting those who put lives in danger. “Every Ventura County law enforcement agency is ramping up their enforcement to make our roads safer this Fourth of July,” said Captain Jim Fryhoff. “For everyone’s sake, don’t drink and drive or you will be targeted for arrest. The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign means zero tolerance for drunk driving – no excuses.”

The Avoid the 14 DUI task force will be cracking down on drug and alcohol impaired driving, deploying officers to two (2) DUI/Drivers License checkpoints, and one (1) DUI saturation patrol. The CHP will be deploying all available officers onto freeways and county roads for its Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that 10,322 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the United States in 2012—representing a third of all crash fatalities. Data shows that the Fourth of July holiday period is especially deadly. During the July 4th period in 2012 (6 p.m. on July 3 to 5:59 a.m. on July 5), there were 179 people killed in crashes, and 44 percent of those crashes were alcohol-impaired.

In every state, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% BAC, yet people continue to break the law and drive drunk. According to the FBI, over 1.28 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics in 2012. And the rate of high-BAC impaired driving is astounding. In fatal crashes during the July 4th period in 2012, more than one fourth (28%) involved a driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .15 or higher – almost twice the legal limit.

NHTSA data also reveals that 46 percent of young (age 18-34) drivers were drunk (BAC of .08 or higher) while driving in fatal crashes over the July 4th period in 2012(6 p.m. on July 3 to 5:59 a.m. on July 5). Motorcycle operators are also over represented as the highest percentage of alcohol impaired drivers in fatal crashes. In 2012, more than one-fourth (27%) of the motorcycle operators in fatal crashes had a BAC of .08 or higher.

Drunk drivers are more common at night, too. Over the July 4th period in 2012, more than a third (39%) of the drivers in nighttime fatal crashes (6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.) were alcohol-impaired, as compared to 16 percent of drivers in fatal crashes during the day.

“This Fourth of July holiday, you can show your patriotism by helping to make Thousand Oaks roads safer for everyone,” said Avoid the 14 Captain Jim Fryhoff. “Remember,” Captain Fryhoff warned, “to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. It’s as simple as that.” Law enforcement is not messing around this Independence Day: if you’re caught driving drunk, you will be arrested. And keep in mind that aside from putting your life and the lives of others at risk, driving impaired can also lead to serious consequences. A DUI arrest can mean time in jail, loss of your license, and steep financial expenses; the average DUI costs about $10,000.
Law Enforcement recommends these simple tips to prevent drunk driving:

• Plan a safe way home before the fun begins;
• Before drinking, designate a sober driver;
• If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation;
• If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to Call 9-1-1;
• If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Avoid the 14 DUI Task Force funding is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ventura, CA - Food allergies, which researchers estimate affect up to 15 million Americans, will be the focus of a free seminar Community Memorial Health System is holding on Tuesday, July 15.

Prashant Verma, M.D., who specializes in allergy and immunology, will conduct the seminar that will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Community Memorial Hospital’s eighth-floor Nichols Auditorium. CMH is located at 147 N. Brent St., Ventura.

Food Allergy Research & Education reports a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room every three minutes in the U.S. Dr. Verma will discuss food allergy risks, what happens during an allergic reaction and the differences between food allergies and food intolerance.

Dr. Verma received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School in Chicago and completed his internship and residency at the University of California San Diego Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Verma also is a clinical instructor at the UCLA Department of Medicine and is a member of the Community Memorial Hospital medical staff.

CAMARILLO, CA - The 21st annual Casa Pacifica Angels Wine, Food & Brew Festival took place on June 1, 2014 and raised over $450,000 (net) to support Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families’ valuable services to Ventura County’s abused, neglected and at-risk children and their families facing great challenges. Festival-goers perused an extensive silent auction with themed baskets when they weren’t sampling a plethora of delicious sweets, savory treats, wines, brews, and specialty drinks from the finest restaurants, caterers, bakeries and specialty shops from throughout the Central Coast with 85 fabulous food exhibitors and 185 renowned wines and brews to choose from.

The 4th annual Yummie culinary competition showcased participating Festival exhibiting chefs’ entries, which were judged in either a Savory or Sweet category and based on flavor, presentation, innovation, and quality. Entries were sampled by a panel of celebrity judges comprised of television, radio, and print media personalities and food columnists and were judged based on which chef’s dish they felt was the “Yummiest.”

The 2014 Yummie Top Chef Award Winners in the Savory category include 1st place to now two-time winner Chef Gabe Garcia of Tierra Sur with a Cold Smoked Hamachi with beet butter, sweet and sour leeks, and dried citrus; 2nd place winner Chef Rachel Holst of Main Course California who entered Cherry Smoked Short Ribs with whipped potatoes and crisped kale; and placing 3rd in the Savory category was Chef Robin Higa of Market Broiler who entered a Seared Sea Scallop with mixed green salad.

The Yummie winners in the Sweet category included 1st place to now two-time winner Head Pastry Chef Anastashia Chavez of Barrelhouse 101 with a Berry Balsamic Cheesecake comprised of layers of genoise, mascarpone cheesecake, and chocolate ganache with mixed berry preserves, infused with Duchess Sour Red Ale and Rozendal’s Aged Balsamic Vinegar; in 2nd place was Chef Allison Davis of The Sugar Lab who entered a Key Lime Pie with a cinnamon graham cracker crust holding a creamy and smooth key lime filling and topped with a toasted meringue; and placing 3rd in the Sweet category was Chef Ernie Borjas of The Yacht Club at Channel Islands Harbor with Paradise Lava – a baklava-styled treat comprised of secret ingredients.

For the first time this year the Festival held a “Best in Fest” brew competition for the hand-crafted, artisan beer exhibitors which was judged one month before the festival. The winning brew – Restraint, a maple brown ale by Institution Ale Company – was prominently featured at the event and accepted their award on the main stage. The winning brew was also paired with one course at the first annual Yummie Top Chef dinner hosted by the Cassar Family which took place the Friday prior to the Festival and featured a nine course dinner specially prepared by master chefs who were previous winners of the Festival’s Yummie culinary competition. The other courses were deliciously paired with an excellent local wine.

Roadrunner Shuttle & Limousine provided a Safe Ride Program which was available for guests to travel to and from their homes ensuring that festival enthusiasts could enjoy their time at the Festival and arrive home safely.

On Saturday, June 14th, The Alumni from Fillmore High celebrated their Alma Mater in true form. First and foremost, it was all about the Scholars. 13 Scholarships were presented to members of the Class of 2014, and brought the total amount of Scholarship Dollars, to be given out in 2014 to well over $30,000.00. Thank You Alumni! The afternoon started with a social hour out on the lawn area of the Veterans memorial Building. Music was provided by Joeyd Ortiz '74, and he had everyone rocking to Elvis, Nate King Cole, Madonna. Every Generation had their favorite. After the awesome dinner by DJ's California Cateres (500 plates served), the V.I.P. lounge was open for business, and many made their way to the beautiful patio area where it was transformed into a special lounge area for visiting and socializing well into the night under the stars. Inside, D.J. Don Vela '81 had folks dancing up to 12:00 midnight, and when the last song played "Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight" folks walked off the dance floor with tired looks, and big smiles of a wonderful evening. Thank you all Volunteers who helped make the 101st Alumni Dinner so memorable for so many Generations. This truly is turning into an annual event in Fillmore that shouldn't be missed. SANTA PAULA, CA - On Saturday, June 21, Santa Paula Hospital, 825 N. 10th St., will host a health and community resource fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This free, open-to-the-public, family-friendly event will take place on the grounds of Santa Paula hospital and will include health screenings, a produce distribution, entertainment, on-site pet adoptions hosted by Ventura County Animal Services, CPR instruction plus a clown, obstacle course and face painting for the kids.

The community celebration coincides with the hospital’s 8th anniversary in Santa Paula. A campus of the Ventura County Medical Center, Santa Paula hospital is a 49-bed acute general hospital and has the only emergency room between Ventura and Santa Clarita.

The Ventura Family YMCA - TRX Suspension Training

From June 23rd-August 15th TRX suspension classes will begin. This training utilizes straps that connect to a specialized TRX ceiling mount. Even with your feet planted firmly on the ground, you are given the feeling of being suspended in the air. Course Information
Mental Health First Aid is a ground breaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Attendees will learn:
• The potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.
• How to use a 5-step action plan to assess a crisis situation and select and implement appropriate interventions.
• The realities and prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma in our communities.
• How to access appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources to help someone with a mental health problem.

Faith Trek
Attendees of the faith trek receive the same training, information, and curriculum offered in the standard Mental Health First Aid training. They are also offered the opportunity to contextualize the training and ask questions about responding to a person with a potential mental health crisis within the unique spiritual and cultural dynamics of a local Church or faith community. Mental Health First Aid as taught from a “faith perspective” does not seek to theologize or proselytize attendees but does affirm the vital role of faith and prayer for those persons of faith who are seeking treatment for a mental health disorder.

As in prior years, and as part of our public service, the Assessor’s Office is reminding homeowners who have not previously filled an exemption claim to complete the form now as they may be eligible for this tax savings benefit. Last month exemption claims were mailed to homeowners who do not currently have the exemption but who may qualify. A qualified homeowner exemption claim lowers taxes by approximately $70 per year.

Filing the exemption claim is a free service. The claim form should be completed and returned to the Assessor’s office as soon as possible. The assessor seeks to enroll all qualified exemptions during the month of June before the close of the 2014-15 Roll.

In the past, private companies have solicited homeowners to file their exemption claim for a $35 fee. The assessor warns homeowners that they risk identity theft if they return the claim to anyone one other than the Assessor.

Given the personal information contained in these forms, homeowners should only file the claim form by regular mail addressed to the Assessor’s office or return the form to the Assessor’s office in person.

It is important that the assessor receive the form and the required information to process the exemption claim. To qualify the owner must occupy the property as the principal place of residence. If you believe you qualify for this exemption and have not received an exemption claim form you can obtain it from the Assessor’s website under the Quick Link Forms tab.
