St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Fillmore, had an impressive turnout on Sunday, October 1st, for its annual Parish Fiesta. The 7-hour fiesta included a blessing of the animals, live mariachi music, folklorico dancers (pictured), bingo, games/prizes, face painting, raffle, silent auction and plant sale. Enchiladas and tacos were sold, along with drinks, ice cream, fruit/veg cups, shaved ice, bake sale and more. And for $5 bucks you could have the “villain” of your choice arrested and thrown in jail, above. Bail was set at $5.

Sonic is finally making its way to Fillmore! The first Ventura County Sonic Drive-In is anticipated to be built at the northwest corner of Orange Grove and Ventura Street (SR-126). In October 2018, The Gazette reported it was slated to open in summer 2019, but Covid-19 and other factors caused its delay. In 1958, Top Hats existed in Enid and Stillwater, Oklahoma. However, only four opened, because the name was already copyrighted to another business. Echoing the jet age, Top Hat’s slogan was “Service with the Speed of Sound,” so the new name “Sonic” was chosen. There are now 80 Sonic’s in California alone. Photo credit Angel Esquivel-AE News.

The Fillmore Fire Department would like to remind all residents that the annual hot dry Santa Ana winds are quickly approaching. These winds can carry hot embers for very long distances. The Fire Department is encouraging everyone to evaluate their properties/yards for any hazardous vegetation and/or trash that may be present and remove the hazard. Besides trash this vegetation may be dry grass or brush, broken limbs on trees, or any flammable ornamental species often found growing around homes. To help facilitate the disposal of these hazards, the Fire Department is having a free drop off disposal day. All residents of Fillmore are encouraged to take advantage of this free opportunity.
On Saturday, September 30th, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, all residents in the city may haul any trash, tree/brush trimmings direct to the Fillmore City Well #4 location at 728 Goodenough Rd. for free disposal. On Monday, September 11th, Fillmore City Fire Department held a memorial ceremony marking the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. The memorial began at 6:30am. The American flag was raised promptly at 6:55am. Let us remember the sacrifices made by so many that morning. Work on the sewer repair is almost over! The new sewer line and the manholes have been completed and the sewer by-pass pumps were turned off as of Friday, September 1, according to Troy Spayd, Fillmore City Municipal Service Director. The sewage has been flowing since then and the contractors are working on making road repairs and demobilizing the equipment. Paving has begun and will last through Thursday, Sept. 14. Then there will be restriping that needs to take place. Most of the work will be completed by the end of this week, with everything finished by end of next week. The cost of the extensive repair that took place after storm damage to the sewer on March 16 was almost $4 million. In and out-of-town traffic has been greatly impacted by Highway 126 and street closures, and the community is relieved the roadwork is ending. Photo credit Angel Esquivel-AE News.
