A note from Coach Lolita Bowman: Girls varsity tennis played against Carpinteria high school. The final score was Fillmore 3, Carpinteria 17. Fillmore singles players Emilia Magdaleno, Melissa Higuera, and doubles team Eveleen Lizarraga and Heilynn Burr scored the three points for Fillmore. We also played against Nordoff high school on October 3. The final score was Fillmore 1, Nordoff 17. Doubles team Melissa Higuera and Rosalyn Diaz scored the solo point. These two teams were tough to play against. Even so, I can tell you again that the coaches from Carpinteria and Nordoff were absolutely impressed with the integrity and the skill level of the Fillmore girls. The coaches typically react in disbelief as I explain that they have only been playing tennis for 3-6 months. I think the girls on the team are discovering a little about themselves as they win some and lose some of the matches played. I remind them all of the time that they didn’t even know how to play up until a few months ago. Now, some of them are beating girls that have been playing for years. That is an accomplishment! This team is competitive and play they their best when they hit the courts. Melissa Higuera is playing on the tennis team for her second season. I hope she returns for a third season! Like sophomore Melissa, I have a young team this year consisting of many freshman and sophomore girls. If I get lucky, next year’s focus will be on strategy and slicing the ball. So, if you are a young girl hoping to be on the team next year, there may be some competition to gain a spot on the team. I know the city of Ventura offers tennis lessons to youth; maybe Fillmore will catch up on that idea. Fillmore competes against Santa Paula on October 8, ad the 24th. Come support the girls. There is plenty of standing room on the sidewalk to watch the girls play. Bring a chair and a snack to enjoy the show. Thank you again to the supportive parents and to the great bus drivers, especially Joyce, for transporting us to the matches. |
