Many Americans were appalled when President George W Bush termed Islam a religion of peace. Those who knew anything about Islam’s long and ancient history of slave trading, drug dealing and brutality could not believe what they were hearing from a president whose nation was attacked by members of this religion. It soon grew apparent that Islam is that strange animal that does not fit in any neat diplomatic category. It is part religion, part government, part military, part economic all rolled into one violent, dark entity that defies modern character and decency. On the forefront, Islam says it is peace and righteousness. In actuality, it is the extreme opposite. Yet the world is still trying to suspend its disbelief.

In 1988, when Florida first considered passing a shall-issue concealed carry permitting (CCW) law, gun control groups hysterically predicted massive public bloodshed and shoot-outs in the streets. But nothing like their dire predictions has ever happened. In fact, after Florida civilians were allowed to legally carry guns in public for self-defense, certain categories of violence plummeted. For example, in the first five years after Florida allowed concealed carry, murders went down 21%, while nationally they rose 9%.

As many other states followed Florida’s lead and also started issuing licenses to carry, crime rates began to subside nationally.

Except that is, in Washington D.C. where guns were completely banned and no carry was allowed. Murders there soared 26% over the same period that Florida’s murder rate fell 21%.

“They face the terrifying prospect of being forced into marriage or sold as sex slaves…” As I noted here and elsewhere, there are many Qur’anic passages and present-day Muslim clerics who justify this practice on Islamic grounds. Here for your reference is another passage that assumes that a man will have both wives and sex slaves, and that makes it clear that that is exactly what the “captives of the right hand” are:
“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: They who are during their prayer humbly submissive, and they who turn away from ill speech, and they who are observant of zakah, and they who guard their private parts except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed” (Qur’an 23:1-6)

According to Islamic law, Muslim men can take “captives of the right hand” (Qur’an 4:3, 4:24, 33:50). The Qur’an says: “O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesseth of those whom Allah hath given thee as spoils of war” (33:50). 4:3 and 4:24 extend this privilege to Muslim men in general. The Egyptian Sheikh Abu-Ishaq al-Huwayni declared in May 2011 that “we are in the era of jihad,” and that meant Muslims would take slaves. In a subsequent interview he elaborated:

There are several Qur’an verses that Muslims who believe in sex slavery — like those of the Islamic State — point to in order to justify kidnapping young girls and pressing them into sexual slavery:

If you fear that you will not act justly towards the orphans, marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own; so it is likelier you will not be partial. (Qur’an 4:3)

And:
And also prohibited to you are all married women except those your right hands possess. (Qur’an 4:24)

And:
O Prophet! We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have paid their dowries; and those whom your right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to you.

See also 70:29-30. The mainstream Muslim commentary Tafsir al-Jalalayn explains that 4:3 tells Muslims to “marry only one, or, restrict yourself to what your right hands own, of slavegirls, since these do not have the same rights as wives.” The twentieth-century Qur’an commentator Maulana Bulandshahri explains the wisdom of this practice, and longs for the good old days:

During Jihad (religion war), many men and women become war captives. The Amirul Mu’minin [leader of the believers, or caliph -- an office now vacant] has the choice of distributing them amongst the Mujahidin [warriors of jihad], in which event they will become the property of these Mujahidin. This enslavement is the penalty for disbelief (kufr).

He goes on to explain that this is not ancient history:
None of the injunctions pertaining to slavery have been abrogated in the Shari’ah. The reason that the Muslims of today do not have slaves is because they do not engage in Jihad (religion war). Their wars are fought by the instruction of the disbelievers (kuffar) and are halted by the same felons. The Muslim [sic] have been shackled by such treaties of the disbelievers (kuffar) whereby they cannot enslave anyone in the event of a war. Muslims have been denied a great boon whereby every home could have had a slave. May Allah grant the Muslims the ability to escape the tentacles of the enemy, remain steadfast upon the Din (religion) and engage in Jihad (religion war) according to the injunctions of Shari’ah. Amen!

This is by no means an eccentric or unorthodox view in Islam. The Egyptian Sheikh Abu-Ishaq al-Huwayni declared in May 2011 that “we are in the era of jihad,” and that as they waged jihad warfare against infidels, Muslims would take slaves. He clarified what he meant in a subsequent interview:

…Jihad is only between Muslims and infidels. Spoils, slaves, and prisoners are only to be taken in war between Muslims and infidels. Muslims in the past conquered, invaded, and took over countries. This is agreed to by all scholars–there is no disagreement on this from any of them, from the smallest to the largest, on the issue of taking spoils and prisoners. The prisoners and spoils are distributed among the fighters, which includes men, women, children, wealth, and so on.

When a slave market is erected, which is a market in which are sold slaves and sex-slaves, which are called in the Qur’an by the name milk al-yamin, “that which your right hands possess” [Qur’an 4:24]. This is a verse from the Qur’an which is still in force, and has not been abrogated. The milk al-yamin are the sex-slaves. You go to the market, look at the sex-slave, and buy her. She becomes like your wife, (but) she doesn’t need a (marriage) contract or a divorce like a free woman, nor does she need a wali. All scholars agree on this point–there is no disagreement from any of them. [...] When I want a sex slave, I just go to the market and choose the woman I like and purchase her.

You remember all those contributions by Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation, don’t you? Remember the Muslim signers of the Declaration of Independence? And the Muslims who gave James Madison information about the Constitution of Medina that he used when framing the Constitution? Remember the Muslims who fought so valiantly during the War of 1812 and the Mexican War? Remember the Muslim abolitionist Senators who faced down the South in the antebellum Senate, the Senate chamber ringing with their oratory about how the Qur’an says to free slaves and so the U.S. government should, too? Remember the Muslim regiments in the Civil War (all on the Union side, of course!)? The Muslim industrialists who brought us railroads, the telegraph, the telephone? The Muslims who fought so valiantly in the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II? “Friday at noon was the deadline for Christian families to meet ISIS’s demands: Convert to Islam, pay an anachronistic Islamic tax for non-Muslims known as jizya, leave Mosul, or be killed. But the day before the final exodus, Christians were informed jizya was no longer an option. The order came to convert, leave, or die.”

This “anachronistic Islamic tax” is actually in the Qur’an, which no Muslim would describe as anachronistic: “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued” (Qur’an 9:29).

It probably should be no surprise that an elected government official from the Democratic Party would be opposed to the safety and security of the United States, yet somehow Illinois Rep. Louis Gutierrez still manages to shock.

In a less docile and arguably more civilized time, Gutierrez would have been dipped in tar and run out of town on a rail. But today's Democratic Party being what it is, he's applauded, even when he speaks to a conference hosted by the seditionist La Raza movement and calls for Latinos to "punish" people who oppose amnesty, meaning mostly Republicans.

Looking down the wrong end of a telescope gives you an entirely mistaken perspective on the universe. The Los Angeles Daily News allowed Tim Rutten to publish an opinion piece (The dangerous illusion of Americans and their guns, May 30, 2014) that displayed just such an inverted perspective on the topic of the social utility of guns in American society.

Rutten correctly noted that nearly two thirds of all gun deaths are suicides. But Rutten’s political bias inverted the cause and effect perspective. Rutten claimed that “a Californian who purchases a gun is four times more likely to take his own life [with a gun] over the next year as someone who does not.” Nevermind that if you buy a gun to kill yourself you are probably going to use it to do just that. The reality is that suicidal people find a way, whether a gun is available or not. America and Canada share many cultural similarities and have nearly identical suicide rates, but suicidal Canadians – who own fewer guns than Yanks – choose to swallow poison instead. Lithuanians have less than 1% of the guns per capita than Americans do, but Lithuanians kill themselves three times as often, typically by hanging. So while some depressed people buy a gun as their specific choice of suicide method, for others the presence of a gun simply gives them a first choice. But the absence of a gun just makes them choose a different mode. Guns are not the cause of suicides. The trigger does not pull the finger.
