Ventura, CA - Community Memorial Healthcare Foundation is holding two of its most well-known events on the same weekend in September at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa and invites the public to attend one or both of these events. The 15th Annual NICU Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, with the 40th Annual Benefactors’ Ball is set for Saturday, Sept. 29. Community Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing care for premature and struggling infants, benefits from the funds raised at the NICU Golf Tournament. The unit holds a Level IIIb designation, a certification reflecting the highest quality of comprehensive care. Funds raised from this year’s tournament will go toward the purchase of a Birthing Simulator. In addition to golf, the tournament features lunch, prizes, and awards, and is a four-person “Texas Scramble” format. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. Tee time. The Camarillo Police Department will be hosting a Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class. The Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class is a cooperative effort between the Camarillo Health Care District, Camarillo Police Department, Department of Motor Vehicles, and senior drivers. In an attempt to remain proactive and not reactive, the Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class is designed to help senior drivers understand how age related issues could affect a person’s ability to drive safely. The Senior Citizen Driver’s Education Class will offer lecture on issues related to senior citizen drivers, advice on how to be a safer driver, information for caregivers, alternate forms of transportation and community resources available to seniors. Our goal is to raise awareness and reduce the number of senior-related injuries and deaths due to traffic collisions. Senior Drivers and / or their caregivers are encouraged to attend the class. Nine fun filled days of setting-up, selling & packing up, It takes a lot of volunteers to run a Fireworks Booth. Thank you so much for supporting the senior center. Our heart felt thanks to our Mayor Gayle Washburn & her husband Jeff Washburn, Carmen & John Zermeno, Jean Westling, Jeanne Murray, Sherry Johnson, Carla Browning, Brian Sipes and Brett, Cecilia Burns, Valerie Brinton, Janine Rees, Charlie Alvarez, Larry & Becca Bouligny, Patty & Vince Stehly, Deborah & Jim Galarza, Jim Arellones, Cara, Angie Pagliano, Iris Martin, Neva Picketts. The senior center is kept open by the support of many volunteers. Due to Cutbacks our Salad Bar will only be every other Tuesday. If you need to mark your calendars start with Tuesday, July 3 then July 17th and so on. We will be serving regular hot lunches Mondays, Tuesday (on the in-between weeks), Wednesdays & Thursdays. No lunch is served on Fridays. Low Vision Support group will not meet July or August, we will meet again on September 26th, from 10 to 11:30 AM. Then October 24th. & December 19th. Alzheimer’s & Dementia Caregiver Support Group meets on the 2nd & 4th Mondays each month from 9:00 – 10:30 A.M. This is a great opportunity for those caring for their love ones to step back, take a moment to breath, to share & learn from others going though the same difficult decisions, to unload the frustrations of repeating information and worrying what’s going to happen when your not there to keep an eye on them. Norma Featherston from the Alzheimer’s Association along with Ted Stekkinger volunteer their time to facilitate the group. The Art Composition Class will "NOT" have a Teacher for the Month of July, any of the students wishing to come in and continue with any of the projects or practice are welcome. VENTURA, CA - SCAN Health Plan has partnered with Ventura County Area Agency on Aging and Grey Law of Ventura County Inc. to offer a free legal workshop for seniors. The program, Legal Information for Elders (LIFE), will be held on Friday, July 27, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at SCAN Senior Resource Center, 1001 Partridge Dr., #200, in Ventura. The workshop will cover topics of importance to seniors, including: "There can be great peace of mind in knowing your legal options," said Steve Lehman, MBA, MPH, manager of the SCAN Senior Resource Center. On Wednesday, May 30, 2012, an estimated 100,000 older adults will participate in local fitness activities throughout the country as part of the 19th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day® (NSHFD), the nation's largest health event for older adults. During Senior Health & Fitness Day the Ventura Family YMCA will open its doors for free to all seniors and will offer fitness activities, seminars, and provide an opportunity for seniors to connect directly with more than 20 local senior service providers. Programs will range from small group exercise classes to walking tours, health fair and wellness seminar. Most programs include an exercise or physical activity component, as well as information about senior subjects. "Older adults at all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to participate," says Rich Gross, YMCA Health and Wellness Director. "Our goals for Senior Day are to make exercise fun, to increase awareness of the benefits of a regular exercise program for older adults, and to encourage all older adults to take advantage of the many health and fitness programs offered at the Y." Life Stories, Myth, and the Imagination has been rescheduled due to conflicting schedules. The new date is Tuesday, September 11th. How does our creative imagination make it possible to discover new understandings each time we revisit a memory, or a life event? AARP Driver Safety Class: Consists of two days, 4 hours each, required too get your completion certificate to get a discount on your Auto Insurance. The class is set for June 4th & June 7, from 9-1pm. The class is designed to help individuals tune up their driving skills and refresh all the rules of the road. This is especially handy if your drivers license is about to expire and you might have to take the written test again. VENTURA, CA - Senior adults are invited to participate in a discussion about two newly funded grants that will impact the health of all residents of the city of Ventura - on Wednesday, May 16, from noon to 2 p.m. at Ventura Avenue Adult Center, 550 N. Ventura County Public Health was awarded a CDC Community Transformation grant to collaboratively address the issue of chronic disease-related health disparities in the county. Kenneth S. Kosik, M.D., William Vasquez and Steve Lew have been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer’s Association California Central Coast Chapter. Kosik is a nationally known leader in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and the Harriman Professor of Neuroscience Research and co-director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He serves as executive medical director of the Cottage Center for Cognitive Fitness. Kosik is the co-author of “The Alzheimer’s Solution: How Today’s Care is Failing Millions and How We Can Do Better,” published by Prometheus Press, and the winner of numerous research and science awards. Vasquez is CEO of Santa Barbara-based Vasquez Media Group, which does business primarily with Fortune 500 companies and their ad agencies, with a focus on collaborative publishing in national print and digital media programs. His roster of advertising and marketing clients has included the NFL Players Association, Sony Music and Universal Music, among many others. Pageant seeks to put seniors in spotlight
Conejo Valley, CA – The Ms. Senior California Pageant is conducting a search to find contestants in the Ventura County area for the third preliminary pageant in May 2012. The two top contestants will advance to the State Pageant to compete for the title of Ms. Senior California in August. The Pageant is open to women who have reached the “age of elegance” – 60 and up. The Pageant seeks to elevate elegant senior women and allow them to get the recognition they deserve. Pageant competition is based on an interview, an evening gown presentation, sharing of a philosophy of life, and talent. It will be held at The Goebel Senior Adult Center, 1385 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks CA, 91362. Applications must be submitted and approved by April 14. In honoring “America’s greatest generation,” the Pageant is hosting seven regional preliminary pageants around California, with the Ventura County area being the fourth stop. The top two finalists from each preliminary pageant will advance to the State Pageant in August for the title of Ms. Senior California. In addition, Ms. Senior California will go, all expenses paid, to participate in the October 2012 Ms. Senior America Pageant. Reigning Ms. Senior California, Norma Morein from Long Beach, went on to win Third Runner Up at the 2011 Ms. Senior America Pageant. A former educator and business owner, Norma spends her time assisting families and seniors in completing oft-neglected tasks – making their days easier and less complicated. She has used her platform as Ms. Senior California to bring “attention to the resources, skills, knowledge, talents, and experience that the millions of seniors in this country possess.” All contestants are also invited to become a member of the Cameo Club and to perform in the “Silver Girls Entertainment Troupe.” Through traveling around to large and small venues alike, the goal of the Troupe is to bring joy and happiness to their audience. Since 2001, the Troupe has performed at over 50 events each year. Since 1972, the Ms. Senior America – as well as all state chapters – has held to the philosophy that seniors are the foundation of America and should be considered its most valuable treasure.
