Shown above: Participating in the Make a Wish event were (l-r) Clarisa Martinez, John Wilber, Tania Morales, Aime Lopez, and a Make-A-Wish Representative. Fillmore High School Associated Student Body hosted their Walk for Wishes on May 19th, at the football field, to help make wishes come true for kids with life threatening medical conditions. Walkers secured sponsors from friends, family and local businesses. 100% of the sponsorships went to Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties. It was a fun afternoon of exercise, great food, camaraderie and entertainment. The group had a goal of $5,000 to adopt the wish of a child. The goal was $5,000, however they reached approximately $3,000. Make a Wish is working with several high schools in Ventura County-- Simi Valley HS, Channel Islands HS, Adolfo Camarillo HS, and Fillmore HS. The goal was to keep it simple, and let the students organize their own fundraisers with the minimum goal of granting a single wish between all the schools. It costs about $5,000 to grant a wish. Everyone involved can be very proud that they were able to raise so much money. With more planning, next year they hope to raise the full $5,000 needed to grant a wish. The three students in Fillmore responsible for organizing the event were Veronica Ocegueda, Taelor Burhoe and Esperanza Ocegueda. Fillmore High School PE teachers Curtis Garner, Matt Suttle and Kari Appleford raised over $1,200 by encouraging their PE students to participate. Also a class at San Cayetano brought in over $300, and the Alverdi family brought in close to $300 in sponsors. It was a great day! Enlarge Photo By Anonymous — Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Information About Grizzly Youth Academy
Thank you for your inquiry on Grizzly. It is a pleasure to share my thoughts with you on this wonderful program. I have been recruiting young men and women to this program for 10 years and in the past have served as a mentor as well. I have also discouraged students from going and have offered other suggestions instead when I think it is not an appropriate option for them. For the record, I DO NOT recruit for any branch of the military and I have always been informed that the Grizzly staff does not recruit or advertise the military as a choice for students either. My only interest is to help students graduate from their high school and to help them with resources that will enable them to be successful in reaching their goals in their adult life. The reasons why any youth would consider Grizzly vary based on their individual, personal or academic situation. In the end, it is up to the youth and their informed parent(s), to decide if this voluntary program is the right choice for the student. As a counselor, I review the academic history with students and parents, and hand out applications when inquiries are made. In many cases, students can also make the choice to improve their academic situation here at Fillmore High School by asking for help from their teachers and counselors, staying after school, completing their homework, studying for tests, or by enrolling at Sierra High School and/or taking additional courses through Ventura College. The Grizzly Youth Academy is a very structured CONTINUED » |

A special thank you to those 75 Fillmore High School youth (some of whom are pictured above) who volunteer to make a difference in the lives of a younger child. The youth meet weekly to do homework, arts and crafts, or to talk about something of interest or simply share how their week has gone. In addition the youth go on trips together (on February 15 they are going to the LA Zoo). The youth are supervised by program staff; Amelia Aparicio for Mountain Vista, Sespe and the Boys and Girls' Club; Norma Magana and Alicia Rodriguez at Fillmore Middle School. The program started matching high school youth with 5 - 12 year old elementary and middle school students in 2000. In 2003 the Fillmore/Piru Mentor Program joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Ventura County. The high school youth are called Big Brothers or Big Sisters and the elementary or middle school youth to whom they are assigned is the Little Brother or Sister. The cost to match a high school "Big" and elementary "Little" is approximately $1500 per match. Studies have shown that the longer the match the greater the experience for both the "Big" and the "Little". Most high school students are signed up to be a mentor in their Freshmen year and they are encouraged to continue on through all four years of high school. If you are interested in donating to the program or would like to know more, please contact Lynn at 907-6576. Enlarge Photo |
