 Ventura County Sheriff's Department On March 4th , 2011, the victim was confronted by five subjects after playing a game of basketball. The suspects surrounded the victim and said they had felt disrespected. The suspects ordered the victim to give them his personal property. Fearing for his safety, the victim complied with the suspects’ demands. After taking the property, the suspects fled the area. Within the next week, members of the Thousand Oaks Special Enforcement Unit were able to positively identify four of the five suspects. During the investigation, it was determined that the suspects are documented members of a local criminal street gang. On March 16th, 2011 several specialized units within the Office of the Sheriff served four search warrants and located three of the suspects. They were subsequently arrested and booked for violations of 211PC / Robbery and 186.22 PC / Street Terrorism. Two suspects are still outstanding and the investigation is continuing. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Thousand Oaks Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is investigating an injury traffic accident involving a vehicle and two pedestrians. The collision occurred in the intersection of Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Hampshire Road. A 14-year-old female juvenile and her 6-year-old nephew were walking westbound on Thousand Oaks Boulevard in the intersection. Both juveniles were in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection. Marie Dena was making a left turn from westbound Thousand Oaks Boulevard onto southbound Hampshire Road when the driver’s side of her car collided with the two juveniles. Personnel from the Ventura County Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to the scene. Both juveniles were treated at the scene and then transported via ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for further treatment. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Camarillo Police Department’s Community Resource Unit is hosting an “Identity Theft- Fraud Prevention Day on Saturday, April 2nd, 2011. The event will take place at the Camarillo Police Department, 3701 E. Las Posas Road Camarillo, between 10 AM - 4 PM. The event will include a class on ID Theft-Fraud prevention for Camarillo residents. The class will be presented by the Crime Prevention Officer and the Ventura County Credit Union. Topics to be covered include, ID Theft, Scams, and various types of Fraud. The class will run from From 12 PM to 4 PM, residents will be able to have documents shredded at the Camarillo Police Department. RSI shredding services will be conducting the shredding and no appointment is necessary. Through a partnership with RSI, there is no fee for this service for Camarillo residents (up to 12 grocery bags full of documents). The shredding will be conducted in the Camarillo Police Department's parking lot. In addition, from 12 PM to 4 PM, residents will be able to dispose of unused and expired prescription drugs (no syringes or needles) in the Camarillo Police Department’s prescription drug drop off receptacle. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Ventura County Emergency Planning Council is continuing its commitment to community disaster preparedness education by partnering with Ventura County Office of Education. All Ventura County public school children have been invited to accept the challenge in preparing for emergencies and participate in two contests being held throughout Ventura County. “Knowing what to do in an emergency is an important part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count,” said Laura Hernandez, Assistant Director of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services. The art and video contests focus on the importance of having an emergency supply kit, developing a family communications plan, and being informed about the local hazards in our community. Contest flyers were distributed to all of the schools and students should submit their entries to their school office by April 15, 2011. Awards will be given to the best individual, best school, and best district for each division and contest. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Camarillo Deputies responded to a call of a gunshot victim around 1700 hours on Monday, February 1st at the Mission Nursery in Somis. When they arrived they found a male victim, later identified as Gilberto Aguilera 36 yrs of Somis, had been shot. Witnesses told deputies the suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle. The Sheriff’s Department airlifted the victim to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Within a few hours, Major Crimes Detectives were able to locate the suspect and take him into custody without incident. He was booked in the Ventura County Jail on unrelated charges while detectives followed up on additional information and leads. On March 12, 2011, Justo Mora Navarro, a Somis resident, was arrested at the Ventura County Jail for the murder of Gilberto Aguilera. Ventura County Sheriff's Department In December of 2009, the Sheriff’s Gang Unit investigated a shooting that occurred in the unincorporated are of Nyeland Acres. Investigators quickly identified a gang member named Joseph Peralta as a possible suspect. During the investigation, they recovered photographs of Peralta holding a sawed off shotgun as well as witnesses who state Peralta was in possession of the shotgun. Peralta, who was a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing a firearm. On 12-22-2009, investigators arrested Peralta for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was booked into the Ventura County Jail and has remained in custody since that arrest. For the next 15 months, gang investigators uncovered numerous crimes they believed Peralta had participated in. They included an illegal gun transfer from one gang member to another that Peralta arranged while in custody. Gang investigators were able to intercept the transfer on 2-11-10 and recover the gun. On 9-23-2010, gang investigators had obtained enough evidence to arrest Peralta for the Nyeland Acres shooting. He was arrested and charged with assault with a firearm and street terrorism. During the 15 month investigation, investigators intercepted numerous communications between Peralta and his sister, Valerie Peralta, in an attempt to dissuade the many witnesses who were going to testify against him. Investigators found that Valerie contacted at least one of the witnesses and attempted to keep them from testifying. On 3-11-2011, gang investigators arrested Valerie Peralta at her residence for Witness Intimidation and Street Terrorism. She was booked into the Ventura County Jail and remains there on $100,000 bail. On 3-12-2011, investigators arrested Peralta at the Ventura County Jail for Witness Intimidation and Street Terrorism. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On 2/24/2011, Camarillo patrol deputies responded to Pleasant Valley Hospital reference a 13 year old male robbery / assault victim. Upon arrival, deputies learned the victim sustained a serious, but non-life threatening, head injury during the incident. On 2/24/2011, at approximately 2025 hours, the victim was walking in the area of Pickwick Drive and Fulton Street in the city of Camarillo. A dark colored mini-van approached him and stopped. Suddenly, two male juveniles exited the mini-van from the rear sliding passenger door and confronted the victim. Meanwhile, an adult driver and adult front passenger remained seated in the van. One of the juveniles brandished a metallic object as he forcefully removed a backpack and cellular phone from the victim. The suspect proceeded to use the metallic object to strike the side of the victim’s head without provocation. Consequently, the victim sustained a serious head injury and was later transported to the hospital by a third party. The two juvenile suspects returned to the van and all four suspects fled the scene with the victim’s property. Information obtained during the initial investigation revealed the incident was gang related. The Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail received this case for further investigation and identified the suspects as criminal street gang members and/or associates. On 03/02/2011, at approximately 0700 hours, a search warrant was served at three locations in the city of Camarillo. Additionally, one probation search was conducted in conjunction with the search warrants. Numerous items of evidentiary value were seized and four suspects were arrested. The investigation remained open and further information was developed regarding the whereabouts of the victim’s stolen property. On 03/11/11, at approximately 0700 hours, an additional search warrant was served at a residence in the city of Oxnard. An occupant identified as Ivan Silva (18 yrs) was detained and found to be in possession of the victim’s stolen property in addition to numerous other items identified as stolen property from unrelated criminal activity throughout the city of Oxnard. Additional items found during the search warrant included burglary tools, a ski mask, and an imitation firearm. During the service of the search warrant, Silva was also found to be in violation of sexual related criminal activity. Silva was arrested and booked at the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility for 211 PC- Robbery, 186.22 PC- Street Gang Terrorism, 496 PC- Possession of Stolen Property, 466 PC- Possession of Burglary Tools, 289(h) PC- Penetration with a Foreign Object, and 261.5PC- Unlawful Intercourse with a Person Under 18 Years Old. On 2-15-2011, while driving in the area of Cascade Avenue and Great Smokey Court, a female victim was stopped by an adult male who asked for her business card. When the victim stopped her car at the curb, the suspect jumped into the vehicle and sexually assaulted her. While fighting with the suspect, a nearby witness screamed, causing the suspect to flee in the described vehicle. The Thousand Oaks Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in providing any information that might lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Previously, Ana Martinez had reported to Thousand Oaks Police she had been the victim of a robbery. She had claimed an older Hispanic couple had knocked on her door and asked in Spanish for some water. Martinez claimed the couple subsequently entered her residence and intimidated her to remain silent as they took several items of jewelry, a flat screen television, and other electronic items. She claimed the couple loaded the stolen items into a light gray van and fled the area. Press releases were disbursed to the community in both English and Spanish. This was specifically intended to target the Spanish news media since Martinez lives in a predominantly Spanish speaking neighborhood. Due to the media coverage of this incident, a witness came forward and contacted the case agent. The witness said he/she saw a different version of the incident involving Martinez. This new information caused the investigator to believe Martinez was not being truthful with the police. The investigator spoke with Martinez and confronted her with the new information. Martinez admitted she had lied about the robbery to cover the fact she was the victim of her own greed. Martinez said she met and spoke with an older Hispanic couple at a local bus stop. The woman claimed to have a son who was hit by a vehicle and she had several medical bills. The woman further claimed the person who hit her son had dropped a bag of jewels. The woman asked Martinez for help and she agreed because she felt sorry for the woman. The male took one of the “diamonds” and left to get the jewel appraised. The male returned with a stack of cash and said each “diamond” was worth $20,000.00 dollars. The couple asked Martinez if she had any money so she could buy a “diamond.” Martinez said she did not have any money but said she had items of property at her residence she would exchange for one of the “diamonds.” The couple drove Martinez to her home, where she gave them several items of value. She did this believing she would make a significant profit by selling the diamond. A few hours later, Martinez realized she had fallen for a scam. Martinez said she was so embarrassed, she reported the robbery to cover her mistake and conceal what really happened to the missing property from other members of the household. The investigator subsequently arrested Martinez for a misdemeanor violation of 148.5(a) P.C. / False report of a crime. Although Martinez committed a crime, she was still approached and scammed by this couple. The Thousand Oaks Police encourages the public to be careful about the choices they make when presented with any sort of “get rich quick” proposition. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Sheriff’s deputies transported and destroyed nearly a ton of drugs last Friday. The significant fact about the operation was that the 1,800 pounds of drugs were accumulated in only a four-month period beginning on November 1, 2010. All of the drugs were collected from pharmaceutical bins located inside the lobbies of Sheriff’s stations throughout Ventura County. The pharmaceutical collection bins were installed in all Sheriff’s stations in 2010, and are available specifically for the public to properly dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications. The program has been a tremendous success in diverting household medications that would otherwise be abused, fall into the hands of minors, or impact the environment due to improper disposal. The pharmaceuticals are periodically emptied from the bins, at which point they are removed from their individual containers, weighed, and then booked into the property room for future destruction. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Camarillo traffic deputies responded to an injury traffic collision at the intersection of Santa Rosa Road and Woodcreek Road. A sports car was turning left from Santa Rosa Rd. onto Woodcreek Road when it was broadsided by a Sport Utility Vehicle traveling west on Santa Rosa Road. As a result of the collision both drivers sustained minor injuries involving complaints of pain and small lacerations. The passenger in the sports car was trapped and had to be extricated by the County Fire Department’s with use of, “the jaws of life.” The passenger sustained serious injuries. The passenger, along with P1, was transported by ambulance to Los Robles Hospital Regional Medical Center, in Thousand Oaks. P2 was transported by ambulance to Ventura County Regional Medical Center, in Ventura. At this time, investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision. As a result of the accident, lanes of both roadways remained partially opened to traffic during the investigation. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On March 4, 2011, at about 4PM, two males entered an orchard located near the 16000 block of South Mountain Road in Santa Paula. The suspects were in the process of stealing avocados and lemons when a local neighbor interrupted them. The neighbor left the area to contact the property owner. When the neighbor and the avocado rancher returned to the scene of the crime, the suspects had fled, but left the picked avocados and lemons behind. Detective Albert Ramirez responded to the scene. After completing the preliminary criminal investigation, he observed two male subjects walking on South Mountain Road who matched the description of the alleged thieves. The suspects were detained and arrested for the theft of avocados and citrus fruit. The suspects were identified as 26 year old Adrian Zavala Montiel and 41 year old Alejandro Ramos Pineda both from Santa Paula. This arrest was made possible due to the “Farm Watch,” partnership between the farming community and the Sheriff’s Office. Farm Watch is a county wide electronic neighborhood watch program that is distributed to more than 600 farms, ranches, nurseries, and supply houses. In this case, because of Farm Watch, the rancher knew how to react and treat the crime scene to preserve potential evidence for immediate processing by deputies of the Sheriff’s Office. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On February 18, 2011, Sheriff’s deputies from the Moorpark Patrol Station responded to a residential burglary call in an unincorporated area outside of Moorpark. Suspect(s) had entered the residence and had stolen a laptop computer. Moorpark Station Detectives interviewed the victim and learned that a friend of the victim had innocently posted on FaceBook that the victim and his family were visiting Universal Studios on the day of the burglary. Detectives also learned that the stolen computer was equipped with a GPS system embedded into the computer’s software. Through the use of the GPS, Moorpark detectives were able to track the stolen computer to a hotel room in the City of Ventura. With the assistance of patrol deputies from the Headquarters Station, Moorpark detectives contacted the suspect, Arnold Ikeda, at the hotel room, and arrested him for possessing the stolen computer. Ikeda was also charged with several drug related offenses, as a subsequent investigation showed that he was also involved in narcotics sales from the hotel room. During the investigation, a second suspect, Desiree Lovio, arrived at the location and was also arrested on drug related charges. Deputies learned the juvenile victim had sustained wounds requiring immediate medical attention. Deputies located the crime scene near the Lamplighter Mobile Home Park in the City of Camarillo. Detectives from the Camarillo Investigation Bureau also responded to assist with the investigation. Detectives identified (A) Gerardo Simon Mares as the suspect. Mares was subsequently arrested for violation of PC 245(a)(1) / Assault with a Deadly Weapon. As the investigation continued, Camarillo detectives discovered information indicating Mares’ mother, (A) Sandra Garcia Mares aided her son after the crime. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On April 11th, 2011, the Ojai Police Department will begin its 3rd Citizen's Academy program. It's a ten-week course designed to give citizens an overview of the police department's function and operational procedures. There will be presentations by a superior court judge, K-9 officer, S.W.A.T. team members, bomb squad, narcotic officers, and many others. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the Chief of Police and get a comprehensive tour of the police station. There will be field trips to the Pre-Trial Detention Facility (main jail), Sheriff's Dispatch, the Sheriff's Training Academy, and heliport. Participants will also get the opportunity to go on a ride-along with a patrol deputy. Anyone interested in attending the Citizen's Academy can get an application at the Ojai Police Station, the city of Ojai website at http://www.ci.ojai.ca.us/ or the Sheriff’s Department website at www.VCSD.org. Potential candidates must be at least 18 years of age, live or work in Ojai or the unincorporated area of the Ojai Valley, have no felony convictions, and have no misdemeanor convictions within one year of applying.
