 The Ventura County Cold Case Task Force is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the remains of a young woman who was murdered and left in a Ventura County High School parking lot in 1980. On June 18, 1980, at 12:40 PM, Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a possible dead body in the parking lot of Westlake High School. When they arrived they found a young woman who was clearly deceased. Evidence at the scene suggested that the victim may have been killed at another location and her body moved to the parking lot, possibly because of its remote location at that time. An autopsy determined the victim died as a result of multiple stab wounds. A homicide investigation was initiated in 1980, but detectives were never able to identify the victim. Investigators now have reason to believe the victim may have been from either the San Fernando Valley or Kern County. The Ventura County Cold Case Task Force is reviewing this case and wishes to identify this young woman. Police ask anyone with information to contact them
 Ventura County Sheriff's Department On April 21, 2013, a subject entered the Starr Market, pointed a handgun at the employee and demanded money. The employee gave money to the suspect and was not injured. The suspect fled and the employee called the police. After a thorough search for the suspect, involving a police K-9, the suspect was unable to be located. At about 9:30 p.m. on April 21, 2013, the Ojai Police Department received a call of a robbery that had just occurred in the 130 block of West Ojai Avenue. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the victim who stated they had just begun closing the business for the evening when a subject approached them from inside the business. The subject demanded money and pointed a handgun at the victim. The victim led the suspect to the business safe where the suspect took money and fled the area prior to deputies arrival. The victim described the suspect as a male, 6’01”, 180 to 200 lbs, wearing a black sweatshirt and dark pants. The Ojai Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in solving this case. Fire Activity up Over 45 Percent
Sacramento – An early increase in fire activity has CAL FIRE looking at the lack of rainfall as an indicator of a potentially higher fire threat this summer. Since the beginning of the year, CAL FIRE has responded to over 680 wildfires, which is more than 200 over the average for this time of year. “Our firefighters have responded to an increased number of wildfires due to the very little rainfall we have received over the past few months,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “Last week in Southern California we increased our staffing and moved our airtankers to their bases, which was needed as we saw several large wildfires over the weekend.” In late March, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted this year’s next-to-last snow survey and the low levels have CAL FIRE concerned about the impact to this year’s fire season. This final survey found that snowpack is just 52 percent of average statewide, according to the Department of Water Resources. Due to the low rainfall levels across the state from January to April, this year is likely to go down as one of the driest ever. The lack of winter rains has resulted in dry conditions across the state leading to a number of unseasonably large wildfires that have already threatened people, homes and the state’s watershed. Over the past few months CAL FIRE crews responded to an increased number of large wildfires including the 296 acre Becks Fire in Lake County, the River Fire in Inyo County which grew to 406 acres and most recently, the 311 acre Jurupa Fire in Riverside County. “In many other areas of the state we are in the process of training our seasonal firefighters and monitoring weather conditions closely to determine our staffing levels,” said Chief Pimlott. “While we are busy transitioning into fire season, this is the time we want residents to begin preparing their homes for fire season by creating 100 feet of Defensible Space.” CAL FIRE is asking Californians to prepare for wildfires by taking these actions: · Maintain 100 feet of Defensible Space · Remove all dead plants, grass, and weeds from within 30 feet of your home · Trim trees 6 feet from the ground · Remove all leaves, pine needles and debris from roofs · Create an Evacuation Plan in case of a wildfire For more tips on preparing for a wildfire visit: www.ReadyForWildfire.org or www.fire.ca.gov. |

Los Angeles, CA. - John Trunzo, AKA: Giovanni, a tax return preparer doing business as “Your Tax Man,” was sentenced to 12 month and 1 day imprisonment 12 months supervised release and $67,231 in restitution for filing a false federal income tax returns (Form 1040), for himself, with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). On September 10, 2012, Trunzo, a resident of Beverly Hills, 60, pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false federal income tax return Form 1040 for the 2007 tax year with the IRS. According to the plea agreement, he chose to file false returns for three consecutive years, 2005, 2006, and 2007, omitting $99,505 in income from his tax preparation business on his 2007 federal income tax return. As a result, he failed to pay a cumulative total of $67,231 in taxes. In addition to knowingly and willfully filing false returns for himself, Trunzo, attempted to obstruct and impede the due administration of the internal revenue laws by, during audits, sending the IRS his own receipts to substantiate improperly-claimed deductions on returns he prepared for his clients. According to Trunzo’s sentencing papers filed with the court, Trunzo asserted he willfully filed his false returns and sent in fraudulent receipts to the IRS on behalf of his clients in order afford a move from his Hollywood apartment to an apartment in Beverly Hills and gain access to Beverly Hills schools for his son. Trunzo’s submission of false returns on his own behalf and illegitimate receipts on behalf of his clients stopped only after he was first confronted with his illicit conduct by IRS special agents on October 24, 2008. Sacramento – CAL FIRE firefighters are on high alert as gusty winds will increase the fire danger across much of Southern California. The National Weather Service issued a “Red Flag Warning” starting Thursday morning through Friday afternoon due to a moderate Santa Ana wind event. Gusty winds up to 50 mph are expected across many parts of Orange, Riverside and San Diego Counties. On Monday, April 15, CAL FIRE increased its firefighting staffing in Southern California and now those crews are prepared to respond to any new wildfires. CAL FIRE’s Southern California airtankers were scheduled to be staffed on April 22, but due to the elevated fire danger, they will be staffed today. “Fire Season may only be beginning, but the potential for damaging wildfires exists this year due to our dry winter,” said Chief Ken Pimlott, director of CAL FIRE. “Everyone should be extra careful during this Red Flag Warning and ensure they are ready for a wildfire.” CAL FIRE is asking everyone to be extra cautious during this Red Flag Warning and help prevent wildfires. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Major Crimes detectives and Jail personnel are investigating a Todd Road Jail inmate death that occurred at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. The death appears to be from natural causes. There was no indication of violence or suspicious circumstances. On April 17, 2013, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Bucciarelle became ill in her cell at the Todd Road Jail. Deputies and jail medical staff responded immediately and rendered aid. Ventura County Fire personnel and paramedics were summoned and Bucciarelle was transported to Community Memorial Hospital by ambulance. She was pronounced dead at about 6:00 a.m. by hospital staff. The cause of death is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit, pending an autopsy by the Medical Examiner. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Deputies from the Ventura Co Sheriff’s Office Camarillo Station responded to a call of an illegal cockfight in the rental stables of a ranch in the 1900 Block of S. Lewis Rd. They found the cockfighting arena, several injured fighting roosters, sharp metal spurs used to tie onto the roosters’ feet, and veterinary supplies used to boost the roosters’ performance. 20-30 owners/spectators fled upon the deputies’ arrival and were not arrested. Several of the birds had been groomed or trimmed to enhance their fighting ability. Ventura County Animal Services staff responded and removed 7 injured or endangered roosters. Investigators from Patrol and Major Crimes/Agricultural Crimes will be following up to seek those responsible for the arena in the rented stable. It took only minutes after Monday’s bombings at the Boston Marathon for people to register hundreds of domain names in an effort to use the Internet to collect money from the public on behalf of the victims of tragedy. Some of those registered domain names will use this as an opportunity to take advantage of people’s good will by committing fraud. Multiple fake charities have already been created, and thieves will use a variety of methods, including social networking sites, fake websites, and direct e-mails to commit fraud. Many of the fraudulent websites contain viruses or spyware that can damage the user’s computer or their network. The following guidelines should be adhered to when accessing information about the bombings or participating with any charities associated with this tragedy: • Donate to charities you know and trust. Be alert for charities that seem to have sprung up overnight in connection with current events. • Don’t give out personal or financial information, including your credit card or bank account number, unless you know the charity is reputable. • Check out the charity with the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Watch, or Guide Star. • Be cautious of e-mails or websites that claim to provide information because they may contain viruses. • Do not open unsolicited (spam) e-mails, or click on links/attachments contained in those messages. • Never reveal personal or financial information in any e-mail or to a telephone solicitor. • Do not go to untrusted or unfamiliar websites to view information about the bombings. • Never send sensitive information over the Internet. The arrests are the result of an extensive investigation that has been ongoing for several months and involved the assistance of specialized units within the Sheriff’s Office and neighboring law enforcement agencies. Both subjects are currently in custody in Ventura County Jail pending their arraignments in Superior Court with bail set at one million dollars. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Today, at approximately 9:30 am, a head on collision occurred, killing a passenger in one of the involved vehicles. Alejandro Pope was driving an Audi A4, and traveling northbound on Reino Road, north of Borchard Road. Amy Stewart, driving a Volvo Sport Utility Vehicle, was stopped in the southbound left turn lane, waiting to enter Borchard Park. Pope’s vehicle then inexplicably crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with Stewart’s vehicle, pushing the Volvo SUV backwards into the hedged landscape of the shopping center on the west side of Reino Road. The collision caused major damage to the front end of both vehicles, and sent all occupants to Los Robles Hospital for treatment. A passenger in Pope’s vehicle, Nicholas Cwayna, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. All other occupants were treated and released. The infant was not injured as he was secured in his car seat. Alejandro Pope was arrested after an investigation revealed he was driving while under the influence of drugs. He was charged with 191.5(a) PC / Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated, and 23153(a) VC / Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs Causing Injury. He was booked into the Ventura County Jail. No students at Newbury Park High School were involved in the collision. The investigation is continuing, and the Thousand Oaks Police Department’s Traffic Bureau is asking for anyone with information concerning the collision to call the Traffic Bureau at 805.494.8271. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Search and rescue volunteers have had a very busy week assisting in the search for two lost hikers in the Cleveland National Forest in Orange County, searching for two at-risk missing teens in Wildwood Regional Park in Thousand Oaks, and assisting with evacuations of residents in the path of a fast-moving brush fire in Fillmore. Ventura County Sheriff’s SAR volunteers were on their way to assist personnel in Orange County late Wednesday in response to a mutual aid request by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Ventura County SAR members assigned to a mixed search team were among the first to hear Kendall Jack’s cries for help and locate her in the rugged area of Trabuco Canyon. At the same time, other SAR members were called to Wildwood Regional Park to search for two missing teenagers, who were possibly suicidal. The Sheriff’s Office has seven SAR teams that respond to a variety of calls throughout the county and the region. Ventura County SAR consists of three mountain rescue teams, a dive team, a K-9 team, a medical team, and the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. They are kept busy with lost or injured hikers in the backcountry, which encompasses most of the geographic area of Ventura County. The SAR teams are made up of volunteers who participate in a variety of intensive training, including mountain rescue operations, emergency medicine, survival techniques, and swift water rescue. “Without our search-and-rescue teams, our ability to save lives in remote areas would be seriously diminished,” said Sheriff Geoff Dean. “The contribution of the SAR teams and all our volunteers cannot be overstated,” Dean said, “and they do it all for free.” Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, and all have career and family commitments. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Since November 2012, the Thousand Oaks Police Department has seen a series of thefts being committed from grocery stores. Women who place their purse in the child carrier portion of a shopping cart were being specifically targeted. The suspects, working in pairs of 2 would wait for the female shopper to become distracted and then one of the suspects would steal the wallet from the purse. A third suspect would impersonate the victims and use the stolen credit cards at various banks to withdraw cash advances from the victim’s account. Then the third suspect would use the stolen credit cards to purchase electronic devices from local retail stores. The Thousand Oaks Police Department’s Detective Bureau began investigating these cases and were able to identify 2 suspects in this wallet theft ring. On 3/27/13, Pillar Abalos was arrested at the San Fernando Courthouse by detectives for identity theft, misuse of an access card, burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime. On 4/3/13, S- Darryl Kilgore was arrested in Los Angeles by detectives for burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime. This investigation is still ongoing and detectives are actively pursuing several leads in these cases. Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Moorpark Police Department Special Enforcement Unit continued a three-month investigation into a vandalism crime spree in the City of Moorpark, with the service of a probation search and arrest of a juvenile. This is the fourth arrest in the past four weeks involving graffiti. Over the past three months, a suspect, using a moniker, spray painted several walls throughout the city causing thousands of dollars of damage. Investigators developed information, which led to a male juvenile as a suspect in the case. On March 30, 2013, Investigators from the Moorpark Special Enforcement Detail and Patrol Deputies from the Moorpark Police Department conducted a probation search at the juvenile’s residence in the 400 block of Millard Street, in Moorpark. Investigatory discovered items of evidentiary value linking the juvenile to the multiple vandalisms. While at the residence, several subjects were contacted. During the investigation, it was determined that several subjects (listed adult subjects above) were found to be under the influence of a controlled substance. In addition, Angel Cota was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. The juvenile was arrested for two felony counts of vandalism, one misdemeanor count of possession of vandalism tools, and violation of probation. The juvenile was released to an adult guardian. All of the adult subjects were booked into the Ventura County Sheriff’s Pre-Trial Detention Facility, Ventura. Ventura County Sheriff's Department As part of April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign, the Thousand Oaks Police Department will be actively ticketing those texting or operating hand-held cell phones during the month of April. Drivers who break the law and place themselves and others in danger will be cited with no warnings. The current minimum ticket cost is $159, with subsequent tickets costing at least $279. Last April, over 57,000 tickets were written statewide for texting and hand-held cell use. There were nearly 450,000 convictions in 2012. Whether it’s a ticket or a crash, as the campaign theme states, “It’s Not Worth It!” Distracted driving is a serious traffic safety concern that puts everyone on the road at risk. In recent years, hundreds have been killed and thousands seriously injured in California as a result of collisions that involved at least one driver who was distracted. Nationally, an estimated 3,331 died in 2011. As a result, law enforcement across the state, including the Thousand Oaks Police Department, is increasingly cracking down on cell phone use and texting. This April will see over 225 local agencies plus the CHP conducting zero tolerance enforcements. “We all know that talking on our cell phones while driving is distracting, but that doesn’t stop some people from continuing to do it,” said Chief of Police Randy Pentis, “This effort is intended to educate our community about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. We hope that once people see the statistics and realize the danger involved, they will change their driving habits to help protect themselves, their families, and others on the road.” Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. Younger, inexperienced drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes. In addition, studies show that texting while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time just as severely as having a blood alcohol content of a legally drunk driver. Studies also show that there is no difference in the risks between hands-free and hand-held cell phone conversations, both of which can result in “inattention blindness” which occurs when the brain isn’t seeing what is clearly visible because the drivers’ focus is on the phone conversation and not on the road. Ventura County Sheriff's Department A worker at the Village Hand Wash Car Wash was injured today after he drove a limousine onto the wash tracks, got out of the vehicle and inadvertently left the vehicle’s transmission in reverse. As the vehicle moved backward, the worker attempted to stop it by pushing it from behind. As he did this, he was trapped between the limousine and a Buick Sport Utility Vehicle that was behind it. The worker, Gus Carranza, 22 yrs., was treated by AMR and transported to Los Robles ER for medical treatment for a possible broken leg. No others were injured. The incident is under investigation by the Thousand Oaks Police Department’s Traffic Bureau. Ventura County Sheriff's Department On March 30, 2013, deputies from the Camarillo Police Department and Ventura County Sheriff’s Office conducted compliance checks at the residences of 78 registered sex offenders in communities of Camarillo and Somis. The compliance checks were part of the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) grant. California state law requires persons convicted of specific sexual assault crimes to register with the agency where they reside. 65 of the 78 registered sex offenders were in compliance with their registration requirements. 13 of the registrants were not contacted because they were not home or had moved. Detectives will follow-up to determine if those registrants are out-of-compliance. There were no arrests made during any of these contacts. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting similar sweeps randomly throughout the county. The purpose is to verify registered sex offenders are living at their reported residences and within the terms of any probation or parole that may apply. The suspect fled the area with an undisclosed sum of money. The suspect exited through the south entrance of the bank, ran through the parking lot, and scaled a block wall. The suspect was last seen running in the direction of the Good Shepard Church parking lot. No one was injured during the robbery. Anyone with information regarding this incident, or anyone observing suspicious subjects in or around the general area, is asked to contact Sgt. John Gleason at 805-384-4727. Ventura County Sheriff's Department Sheriff Geoff Dean is pleased to announce the graduation of the Ventura County Criminal Justice Training Center’s Academy Class #2012-2. The graduation ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center, 800 Hobson Way, Oxnard, California. The guest speaker for the graduation ceremony will be Julia Brownley, the United States Representative for California’s 26th Congressional District. The recruits have completed 23 weeks of instruction provided through the combined efforts of local law enforcement agencies and other criminal justice entities. The intense training and education prepares these officers for the responsibilities of serving their communities.
