Martha Catalina Quiroz Pulido (April 1956 – March 2025)

With our hearts full of love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Martha Catalina Quiroz Pulido, born on April 11, 1956, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, to Francisco Villarruel Pulido (Chico) and Maria Guadalupe Gutierrez (Lupe). Martha, succumbed to heart failure and she passed away peacefully at her home in Fillmore, California, surrounded by her loving family members, on March 4, 2025, at the young age of 68 years.

She was preceded in death by her mama Lupe, her papa Chico and two brothers Juan Carlos and Juan Antonio.

Today Martha is survived by her brothers Francisco Javier, Rafael, and her sister Lupe Medina.

As well as her children Alberto, Dianna, Daniel and Erik and her husband Juventino. Martha’s heart filled with pride and love when she spoke of her grandchildren who were always near. From Dianna and Fabian Robles there are Noah and Gianna and from Erik and Mayra Quiroz there are Ezra, Catalina, and Esaias.

As a child her life was always surrounded by a loving family, early in life while living in Tijuana our paternal grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins filled her world. In October of 1963 the family immigrated, moved to and made Fillmore, California home. She attended Fillmore schools and graduated from Fillmore High School in 1975.

Martha, being the eldest daughter, was tasked with the responsibility of her brothers and sister while both Mother and Father went off to work. She would cook and keep her siblings in line.

After high school she met and married Juventino Quiroz and they had four wonderful children, Alberto, Dianna, Danny and Erik.

Martha’s love of life was contagious, she loved listening to all kinds of music, though she was brought up listening to Rancheras and Boleros, and some Nortenas, she loved to dance to Classic Rock such as Santana, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and the Temptations.

Martha made and maintained friendships for life and will be missed by many in the community. She was a caring and giving soul, always willing to help those in need.

Martha worked many jobs and retired from the Fillmore School District. There she made many friends from both staff, parents and her favorite, the students. Her love and joy for life will be missed by her many friends and all who came in contact with her.

After her retirement she had the opportunity to travel and joined her friend Marcia on a few trips. She also traveled to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to spend time with her older brother Francisco and his wife Angie. While there she enjoyed cruising along the lakes, rivers and following narrow mountain roads and blueberry picking, with her eye on the ready for the local bears. She was also very content searching for treasures at antique stores.

Martha was interested in learning about our family history and through the years her travels took her back to Mexico. She would visit maternal family members in Nayarit and paternal members in Jalisco and most recently in Chihuahua. The warmth of her loving smile was felt by all those family members she made her mission to meet. Martha’s greatest joy was being a grandmother, she spent her retirement years spending quality time with her beloved grandchildren and teaching them compassion.

Martha’s love is etched in our hearts and her smile will live within each of us. You will be our guiding star until we reunite in Christ.

Gracias a la vida que me ha dado tanto!

Her family wishes to thank the care and support she received from the hospice team.

And we wish that you take a moment to reconnect with family or friends who have a special place in your heart.

Jack Griffin, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away January 16, 2025, at his home due to natural causes. Jack lived a very long and fulfilling life. He leaves behind his children Christine, James and David, and grandchildren Dustin, Rose, Madison, Ellie and Bridget. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn of 65 years, his parents and siblings Warren, Gary, Virginia, and Robert.

Jack was born in 1935 in Monterey Park, Ca. He grew up (mostly) in Monterey Park, and Holly Ridge NC. He was the third child of Jack and Myrle Griffin. His father served in the US Army prior to WWII then in the US Navy during WWII. During his father’s deployments for WWII, Jack only saw his father once in 5 years. Jack attended Mark Kepple High School in Monterey Park and was a highly skilled gymnast specializing in the high bar and rings wherein he created a unique release move. He also played trumpet and marched in two Rose Parades. Following high school, Jack attended Pasadena City College, then graduated from Cal State Los Angeles where he earned a degree in accounting that led to a career in the oil industry.
Jack met his sweetheart Marilyn when he was 15 and she 14. It was love at first sight. They were married at age 20 and lived in Monterey Park. Just prior to Jack’s college graduation, Christine was born and after a work-related move to Ojai, she was followed by James and David. Jack was a good provider for his family.

After a year in Ventura, the Griffins bought their first home in El Monte in 1964. Jack and his brothers were proud members of the Buzzards desert motorcycle club. But in 1968 Jack broke his leg during a race. Later after recovering in 1971 the family moved to Canoga Park, followed by another move to Woodland Hills, where the kids grew up and eventually left home. That prompted Jack and Marilyn to purchase their small avocado and orange farm in Fillmore in 1987. They both loved their home and took pride in making it beautiful. Jack enjoyed farm work. Jack and Marilyn also operated a successful eBay business. Together they hosted numerous family gatherings for all occasions that grew love and strong family bonds.
Jack was an extraordinary person, husband, father, grandfather, brother, citizen, Elks member, and friend. We all miss his wonderful sense of humor, many dad jokes, selflessness, and love.

Obituary
Eloy Alfaro Melgoza (March 1960 - January 2025)

Eloy Alfaro Melgoza (March 1960 - January 2025)

In Loving Memory of Eloy Alfaro Melgoza

Eloy Alfaro Melgoza, a man of humor, love, and a passion for life, passed away peacefully, joining his father, Juan Alfaro, in heaven. Born in the quaint town of Urepetiro, Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico, with his roots in Telazazalca and his journey to Fillmore, CA. There, alongside his siblings Juana, Agustine, Armando, Monica, and Herman, he grew into an unforgettable, vibrant soul we all cherished. Always jokingly referring himself as the black sheep of the family

Eloy carried humor like a torch. His wit and banter—especially with his 95-year-old mother, Benedicta (Benny) Alfaro—echoed a sitcom-worthy dynamic. Together, their love-hate comedy lit up their home, a stage of love, laughter, and light-hearted squabbles that deepened their bond.

He loved life, and perhaps no sound was sweeter to him than music. From tunes that captured his soul to belting songs over a cold beer, Eloy’s profound love for music and melody was infectious.

Eloy’s greatest hits will always be his children: Eloy Jr. of Camarillo, CA, Delma of Bakersfield, CA, and Cristian Alfaro of Portland, Oregon. They carry his love for life and humor in their hearts, a legacy sung softly in every laugh, every memory.

Though he’s joined his father in the great unknown, his light continues to shine brightly in those he leaves behind.
“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.” Eloy made a world of love, laughter, and music. His song may have ended, but his melody lingers on, forever etched in the hearts of those who had the joy of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Eloy.

Laughing, singing, and sharing a cold one with those who went before you.

Obituary
Paulino Huerta (July 1933 – January 2025)

Paulino Huerta (July 1933 – January 2025)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Paulino Huerta, on January 7, 2025. He passed away peacefully at home at the age of 91.

Paulino was born in Purísima, Guanajuato, Mexico, and spent his life sharing his love, wisdom, and passions with those around him. Growing up in the same town as his wife, they shared a deep connection and were blessed with 61 years of marriage.

In the 1960s, Paulino and his family lived in Arvin for a few years before settling in Fillmore, where he resided for 58 years. He worked at the historic Rancho Sespe and later with Ameron Pole Products until his retirement.

Paulino had a lifelong passion for soccer. As a teenager, he played for Deportivo Purísima, and in the 1970s, he was one of the coaches for the Los Guerreros soccer team in Fillmore. He also played for Los Santos of Santa Paula. An avid fan, Paulino loved watching soccer matches, cheering on his favorite team, Club León, and enjoying European soccer leagues, particularly Premier League games. He had a wealth of soccer stories to share, including meeting his idol, Antonio Carbajal—the legendary Club León goalie and the first man to play in five World Cups—and reminiscing about Club León players Marcos Aurelio and Martinoli, who helped train his team, Deportivo Purísima.

Music and singing were among Paulino’s favorite pastimes. As a child, he sang in his church’s boys’ choir. Throughout his life, he enjoyed listening and singing to a variety of music genres, with a special love for Bolero songs by Trio Los Panchos, which he often sang at family gatherings on his trips to Mexico.

Paulino was also a gifted storyteller. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren cherished his funny and scary stories, as well as his vivid soccer tales.

Gardening was another one of his passions. He took great pride in his garden, tending to fruit trees and roses, and showing off his grafting skills. His backyard was home to a tree that grew both peaches and plums and a grafted rose bush that bloomed four different colored roses.

Paulino was preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe Huerta and Lucia Gomez, eight siblings, and his beloved wife, Alejandra Becerra. He is survived by his children: Beatriz Acosta (Ray), George Huerta (Elizabeth), and Ray Huerta (Shelley); his grandchildren: Nicole, Brianna (Chuy), Arianna, Patricia, Jah-Leesa (Mike), Cheyenne, Tanner, Bailey, and Sierra; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A devoted family man, Paulino loved spending time with his loved ones at gatherings and on family vacations. Paulino was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was kind-hearted and compassionate, a great friend who always had a positive attitude and a wonderful sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Obituary
Lois Marie “Boots” Brown (January 1934 – March 2024)

Lois Marie “Boots” Brown (January 1934 – March 2024)

Born January 20, 1934, in Los Angeles, CA. Boots passed peacefully March 26, 2024, in Anchorage, Alaska at the age of 90.
Boots was born in her grandmother Bootie’s house in Los Angeles, California (this is whom she got her nickname from). Boots grew up in Fillmore, 60 miles north of Los Angeles amongst orange orchards and working on the family’s citrus ranch in Bardsdale, across the Santa Clara River from Fillmore. She enjoyed riding horses and flying with her mother and father, Margaret “Peggy” and Harold “Hap”, in the airplanes he owned.

Boots went to Bardsdale Elementary School and graduated from Fillmore High School in 1951. When she was 17, her father married again to Marge Remeta. Their union brought Boots a sister, Joyce, and then a baby brother Jim. One week after her 18th birthday, she eloped with Harold “Toadie” Brown, also from Fillmore, to Las Vegas for a chapel marriage in January of 1952.

During the earlier part of her marriage, Harold worked fairly close to home in the oilfield. During this time, she became a member of The Native Daughters of the Golden West out of Ventura. In 1958, she had her first child, Eric. The family of three moved to Venezuela in 1959 for Harold’s directional drilling assignment. Family sent them off with a big bon voyage party at her grandfather Frank LeBard’s home and the party was written about in the local Fillmore Herald. The article mentioned their infant son, Eric, and their black poodle, Paulette, would go along on the trip. Often, she was alone raising young Eric while Harold’s work kept him away for weeks and months at a time, either north in Alaska, or south to Trinidad in the West Indies.

While following Harold’s oilfield career, living in Las Vegas, north and south of the Los Angeles area as well as in Trinidad for a summer, Boots and Harold added another child, Philip, born in Newport Beach in December 1966. They soon moved to Anchorage, Alaska when Philip was 5 months old and Eric 8, for Harold to manage Drilcon, a directional drilling company based out of Long Beach. The family moved out into the Sand Lake area in 1967. Since coming from busy Southern California, Boots described the Sand Lake area as being “out in the boonies”.

It was soon apparent that their infant son Philip was born deaf, a result of Boots contracting the German Measles early in her pregnancy. This turned out to be one of their biggest life challenges, learning sign language and educating Philip in the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

Boots joined the Petroleum Wives of Anchorage and the Anchorage Petroleum Club in the late 1960’s. She worked as a bookkeeper in the 1970’s and also for National Oilwell in the 1990’s and 2000’s in Anchorage. She enjoyed entertaining her new and old friends and built many close relationships. Boots was quite the entertainer at her home, hosting countless neighborhood gatherings as well as longtime friends and oilfield business associates. Not many left without having been served the famous, “Boots Drink” and hearing her direct her husband, “Harold, get up and fix their drinks!”, even if only half empty.

Boots loved traveling to the islands of Hawaii and Maui for vacations, as well as visiting friends and relatives in the Fillmore area. She also enjoyed spending parts of summer at the Birch Ridge golf course outside of Soldotna, Alaska, along the 1st fairway amongst friends and family with all their own trailers and RV’s. She loved her hanging baskets of flowers in the summer, playing the organ and spending time with her family. Boots always looked forward to her stepfather, “Fitz” and mother Peggy’s visits from California - all 33 of them!

Great joy came in 1987 and 1992 with the addition of two grandsons. Her oldest grandson’s marriage brought more joy by gaining her beloved granddaughter and also her great granddaughter. Her family was the highlight of her life. Gram, as she was known to her grandkids, always looked forward to their visits and hugs.

Boots is survived by her sons, Eric (Tracie) Brown and Philip Brown, grandsons Austin and Travis (Sue) Brown, great granddaughter, all of Homer, Alaska. California family includes: brother, Jim (Kathy) LeBard, sister-in-law, Shirley Brown, nephew Russell Brown & niece, Debbie Brown, nephews Michael (Cheyenne) LeBard and Bryan Stafford. Boots was preceded in death by her mother Peggy (Fitz) Fitzpatrick, father Harold LeBard, stepmother, Marge LeBard and stepsister, Joyce Robertson. Her loving husband of 43 years, Harold Brown, passed away in 1995.

Boots will be laid to rest next to her husband, Harold, at the Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore, California this December 29th at 11:00.
