• The Elks National Foundation is offering the “Most Valuable Student Scholarship” to students who are U.S. citizens, involved in extra curricular activities, and demonstrate both academic excellence as well as community service. • The California-Hawaii Elks Association is offering a scholarship to students who plan to pursue a qualified vocational/technical course. All applicants must be citizens of the U.S. For complete details see Mrs. Larin in the College and Career Center. Deadline is Dec.9th.

Students must also be enrolling at an accredited college or university as a full time student and demonstrate financial need. 1. JV & VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - HOME See Coach Sebek and Coach Blakenship for game times.
2. BOYS SOCCER - AWAY @ San Marcos. Frosh and JV Games begin at 3:15PM. Varsity begins at 5PM. Boys Soccer is excused from class at 12:45PM and will depart FHS at 1PM.

High School in Review

The month of November has been eventful at FHS. To start off the month we had a CSF Club sponsored mock election on the 4th for the seniors. Each senior cast their vote on a ballot that included the presidential candidates, Proposition 2, Proposition 4, and Proposition 8. Votes were counted by CSF club officials and the “results” were that Barack Obama won with a ratio of approximately 3:1, both Prop 2 and Prop 4 passed by a wide margin. The senior class did not pass Proposition 8, although it was a close race. The election also served to remind eligible seniors to cast their official ballots later that day.

Fillmore High worked hard to put their best foot forward for the state Western Accreditation of Schools and Colleges, the organization that determines whether or not Fillmore High diplomas are legitimate. WASC review happens every six years or so for all schools, and provides a great opportunity to review our progress as a school. For three days committee members interviewed teachers, staff, and students, observed every classroom, and wrote a report that will determine our accreditation.

A Renaissance Rally also took place during the week of the WASC review, and included skits from students and teachers, the presentation of awards for the top ten students of each grade, and some great speeches from Mr. Andersen and Coach Woods that rallied the students for the game against Desert High.

Over sixty students donated blood that week, a record for the school. Another record was set by the senior class – they sold over 1500 pies, beating last years class by several hundred and they thank the community for being so supportive of Grad Nite Live.

Our varsity football team beat Brentwood High on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and has moved on to the semi-finals of CIF. They will travel four hours on Saturday to play Twentynine Palms, and we wish them the best of luck! There will be a rooter bus and tickets are fifteen dollars – if you wish to buy a ticket contact Lynn at the student store.

6. Students: The Fillmore Unified School district board policy provides a process for complaints alleging discrimination of a program or a program’s failure to comply with state or federal law. The policy protects the privacy right’s of the complainant and prohibits retaliation for filing a complaint. Complaints must be written on “Program Discrimination/Legal Violation Complaint Form” available from the Assistant Superintendent and filed within six months of the incident or when it became known. Help in filling out the form will be provided if needed. All other types of complaints, including complaints regarding personnel or instructional materials follow other board policies. The process for registering other complaints is: 1) if the complaint concerns a teacher, first contact the teacher. 2) if the complaints are not resolved by the teacher, contact the principal of the school, then the district superintendent, and finally the Board of Education. Young ladies must also demonstrate initiative in problem solving and significant accomplishments as a volunteer. o SAE Engineering is offering a scholarship to students who intend to enroll in an engineering program accredited by ABET. Students must also be citizens of the United States and meet minimum requirements with regard to SAT’s and/or ACT scores as outlined in the scholarship. 7. The Grizzly Youth Academy, FREE to male and female students, ages 16 through 18 ½, is NOW accepting student applications for the Spring Semester. The program is for students who are behind in credits, have a low G.P.A or want to get away from negative influences. Students must turn in a completed STUDENT APPLICATION and MENTOR APPLICATION to Ms. Norma in the Attendance Office no later than November 30th to make sure you get a spot. Anyone interested in making a positive change in their lives can come by before school, at lunch time or after school to get help with their application.

1. The district office has asked us to remind you that we only have a 2 week break during the Winter Holiday. Please remind your parents that we expect you all to stay in school until the final day – December 19th. We will continue to remind you at times during the rest of the year. This generally is a time when we have a high absence rate, and we are hoping that by reminding your families early, they will plan to postpone any holiday travel until after December 19th. Thank you.
